Abstract:Lithium salts have strong medical properties in neurological disorders such as bipolar disorder and lithium-responsive headaches. They have recently gathered attention due to their potential preventive effect in viral infections. Though the therapeutic effect of lithium was documented by Cade in the late 1940s, its underlying mechanism of action is still disputed. Acute lithium exposure has an activating effect on excitable organic tissue and organisms, and is highly toxic. Lithium exposure is associated with a strong metabolic response in the organism, with large changes in phospholipid and cholesterol expression. Opposite to acute exposure, this metabolic response alleviates excessive cellular activity. The presence of lithium ions strongly affects lipid conformation and membrane phase unlike other alkali ions, with consequences for membrane permeability, buffer property and excitability. This review investigates how lithium ions affect lipid membrane composition and function, and how lithium response might in fact be the body's attempt to counteract the physical presence of lithium ions at cell level. Ideas for further research in microbiology and drug development are discussed.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the mechanisms of lithium ions in the treatment of neurological disorders (such as bipolar disorder) and other medical applications (such as virus prevention). Although the therapeutic effects of lithium salts were recorded by Cade as early as the late 1940s, their specific mechanisms of action remain controversial. The paper mainly explores the following aspects: 1. **Effects of lithium ions on cell membrane composition and function**: - How lithium ions affect the composition and function of lipid membranes. - The impact of lithium ions on membrane fluidity, permeability, and buffering capacity. 2. **Effects of lithium ions on metabolic reactions**: - Lithium exposure is associated with strong metabolic responses in the body, including significant changes in the expression of phospholipids and cholesterol. - Acute lithium exposure activates excitable organic tissues, while chronic lithium exposure alleviates excessive cellular activity. 3. **Effects of lithium ions on circadian rhythms**: - How lithium ions affect the circadian rhythms of unicellular and multicellular organisms. - Differences in sensitivity to lithium ions among different cell types and species. 4. **Effects of lithium ions on neuronal activity**: - How lithium ions reverse neuronal hyperexcitability. - The impact of lithium ions on mitochondrial function, particularly changes in mitochondrial membrane potential and size. 5. **Effects of lithium ions on oxidative stress and inflammation**: - How lithium ions reduce cellular stress and inflammatory responses. - The impact of lithium ions on intracellular calcium ion movement and the regulation of calcium buffering capacity. 6. **Effects of lithium ions on lipid metabolism**: - How long-term lithium exposure causes changes in lipid composition, especially changes in phospholipids and cholesterol. - How these lipid changes are related to the therapeutic effects of lithium ions. Through research on these aspects, the paper aims to reveal the mechanisms of action of lithium ions at the cellular and molecular levels, thereby providing new insights for further microbiological and drug development.
