Abstract:We give a geometric interpretation of the Siegel operators for holomorphic differential forms on Siegel modular varieties. This involves extension of the differential forms over a toroidal compactification, and we show that the Siegel operator essentially describes the restriction and descent to the boundary Kuga variety via holomorphic Leray filtration. As a consequence, we obtain equivalence of various notions of "vanishing at boundary'' for holomorphic forms. We also study the case of orthogonal modular varieties.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the boundary behavior of holomorphic differential forms on Siegel modular spaces and their geometric interpretations. Specifically, the author Shouhei Ma explores how the behavior of holomorphic differential forms on the boundary can be described by Siegel operators, and how these operators are related to the mixed Hodge structures on the boundary Kuga varieties. The main contribution of the paper is to provide a new geometric method to understand these operators, especially in the case of α > 0, that is, the behavior when the differential forms are not canonical forms. ### Background of the paper The paper first reviews the basic theory of Siegel modular spaces \(X = D / \Gamma\), where \(\Gamma\) is a neat arithmetic subgroup of \(\text{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Q})\) and \(D\) is the Siegel upper half - plane. Weissauer proved that holomorphic differential forms on \(X\) exist only in specific degrees \(k(\alpha)=\frac{g(g + 1)}{2}-\frac{\alpha(\alpha + 1)}{2}\), where \(0\leqslant\alpha\leqslant g\). These forms can be regarded as vector - valued Siegel modular forms with weights \(\lambda(\alpha)=((g + 1)g-\alpha,(g-\alpha)\alpha)\). ### Boundary behavior For the case of \(\alpha = 0\), that is, the canonical forms, they usually have logarithmic poles at the boundary, and their extensibility as differential forms is equivalent to the cusp property as modular forms. For the case of \(\alpha>0\), Freitag - Pommerening proved that these forms can always be holomorphically extended in the smooth compactification of \(X\), and the corresponding weight filtration is trivial. ### Main results The main result of the paper is to give a geometric interpretation of Siegel operators in the case of \(\alpha>0\). Specifically, the author proves that for a given cusp \(X_I\) of corank \(r\), the Siegel operator \(\Phi_I\) can be regarded as a descent process from \(Y_I\) to \(X'_I\), where \(Y_I\) is a finite cover of \(X_I\) and \(\pi_I\) is a smooth abelian fibration. Through the holomorphic Leray filtration, the restriction of \(\omega\) on \(Y_I\) can be projected onto \(X'_I\). ### Theorem 1.1 Let \(k = k(\alpha)\) and \(r\leqslant\alpha<g\), and let \(l = k-r(g-\alpha)\). There exists an embedding \(\pi^*E_{\lambda(\alpha)'}\hookrightarrow L^l\Omega^k_{Y_I}\) such that the \(k\)-form \(\omega_I\) takes values in \(\pi^*E_{\lambda(\alpha)'}\) and satisfies \[ \omega_I=\pi^*\Phi_I(\omega) \] as a section of \(\pi^*E_{\lambda(\alpha)'}\). The projection \(\pi^*E_{\lambda(\alpha)'}\to\text{Gr}^l_L\Omega^k_{Y_I}\) is injective, and descends on \(X'_I\) to \(E_{\lambda(\alpha)'}\hookrightarrow\Omega^l_{X'_I}\otimes\pi_{I*}\Omega^{r(g-\alpha)}_{\pi_I}\).
