Abstract:We consider the derivative of the characteristic polynomial of $N \times N$ Haar distributed unitary matrices. In the limit $N \to \infty$, we give a formula for general non-integer moments of the derivative for values of the spectral variable inside the unit disc. The formula we obtain is given in terms of a confluent hypergeometric function. We give an extension of this result to joint moments taken at different points, again valid for non-integer moment orders. For integer moments, our results simplify and are expressed as a single Laguerre polynomial. Using these moment formulae, we derive the mean counting function of zeros of the derivative in the limit $N \to \infty$. This motivated us to consider related questions for the derivative of the Riemann zeta function. Assuming the Lindelöf hypothesis, we show that integer moments away from but approaching the critical line agree with our random matrix results. Within random matrix theory, we obtain an explicit expression for the integer moments, for finite matrix size, as a sum over partitions. We use this to obtain asymptotic formulae in a regime where the spectral variable approaches or is on the unit circle.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the following aspects:
1. **Moments of the derivative of the characteristic polynomial**: Study the non - integer moments of the derivative of the characteristic polynomial within the unit circle, that is, \( E[|\Lambda'_N(z)|^{2s}] \), where \( z \) is a complex number and \( |z| < 1 \). The author gives the general form of these moments when \( N \to \infty \), and pays special attention to the case where \( s \) is a non - integer.
2. **Joint moments**: Extend to the joint moments of multiple points, that is, \( E\left[\left|\frac{\Lambda'_N(z_2)}{\Lambda_N(z_2)}\right|^{2h} |\Lambda_N(z_1)|^{2s}\right] \), where \( |z_1| < 1 \) and \( |z_2| < 1 \). This provides expressions for moments in more complex situations.
3. **Zero - point distribution**: Use the results of the above - mentioned moments to study the zero - point distribution of the derivative of the characteristic polynomial. Through Jensen's formula, derive the expected value of the zero - point counting function, thereby obtaining the radial distribution of zero - points within the unit circle.
4. **Moments of the derivative of the Riemann ζ - function**: Compare the moments of the derivative of the characteristic polynomial with the moments of the derivative of the Riemann ζ - function. Assuming that the Lindelöf conjecture holds, it is proved that the integer moments of the derivative of the Riemann ζ - function away from the critical line are consistent with the results of random matrix theory.
5. **Asymptotic behavior in the microscopic and mesoscopic regions**: Study the asymptotic behavior of the moments of the derivative of the characteristic polynomial when \( z \) is close to the unit circle, especially in the mesoscopic region \( |z|^2 = 1 - N^{-\alpha} \) and the microscopic region \( |z|^2 = 1 - \frac{c}{N} \).
6. **Explicit formula for finite matrix size**: Provide an explicit formula applicable to a finite matrix size \( N \), so as to more easily transition from a finite - sized matrix to an infinite - sized matrix.
### Main contributions
