Abstract:We define and study a multiplicity free covering of a graded manifold. As an application of our research we give a new conceptual proof of the theorem about equivalence of categories of graded manifolds and symmetric $n$-fold vector bundles.

Abstract:A natural explicit condition is given ensuring that an action of the multiplicative monoid of non-negative reals on a manifold F comes from homotheties of a vector bundle structure on F , or, equivalently, from an Euler vector field. This is used in showing that double (or higher) vector bundles present in the literature can be equivalently defined as manifolds with a family of commuting Euler vector fields. Higher vector bundles can be therefore defined as manifolds admitting certain N n -grading in the structure sheaf. Consequently, multi-graded (super)manifolds are canonically associated with higher vector bundles that is an equivalence of categories. Of particular interest are symplectic multi-graded manifolds which are proven to be associated with cotangent bundles. Duality for higher vector bundles is then explained by means of the cotangent bundles as they contain the collection of all possible duals. This gives, moreover, higher generalizations of the known “universal Legendre transformation” T ∗ E ≃ T ∗ E ∗ , identifying the cotangent bundles of all higher vector bundles in duality. The symplectic multi-graded manifolds, equipped with certain homological Hamiltonian vector fields, lead to an alternative to Roytenberg’s picture generalization of Lie bialgebroids, Courant brackets, Drinfeld doubles and can be viewed as geometrical base for higher BRST and Batalin–Vilkovisky formalisms. This is also a natural framework for studying n -fold Lie algebroids and related structures.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of a graded bundle which is a natural generalization of the concept of a vector bundle and whose standard examples are higher tangent bundles TnQ playing a fundamental role in higher order Lagrangian formalisms. Graded bundles are graded manifolds in the sense that we can choose an atlas whose local coordinates are homogeneous functions of degrees 0,1,…,n. We prove that graded bundles have a convenient equivalent description as homogeneity structures, i.e. manifolds with a smooth action of the multiplicative monoid (R≥0,⋅) of non-negative reals. The main result states that each homogeneity structure admits an atlas whose local coordinates are homogeneous. Considering a natural compatibility condition of homogeneity structures we formulate, in turn, the concept of a double (r-tuple, in general) graded bundle–a broad generalization of the concept of a double (r-tuple) vector bundle. Double graded bundles are proven to be locally trivial in the sense that we can find local coordinates which are simultaneously homogeneous with respect to both homogeneity structures.

Abstract:A quasi-Hamiltonian manifold is called multiplicity free if all of its symplectic reductions are 0-dimensional. In this paper, we classify compact, multiplicity free, twisted quasi-Hamiltonian manifolds for simply connected, compact Lie groups. Thereby, we recover old and find new examples of these structures.

Differential Geometry and its Applications

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the categorical properties of Z -graded manifolds. We start by describing the local model paying special attention to the differences in comparison to the N -graded case. In particular we explain the origin of formality for the functional space and spell-out the structure of the power series. Then we make this construction intrinsic using a new type of filtrations. This sums up to proper definitions of objects and morphisms in the category. We also formulate the analog of the Borel's lemma for the functional spaces on Z -graded manifolds and the analogue of Batchelor's theorem for the global structure of them.

Abstract:Branched coverings boast a rich history, ranging from the ramification of Riemann surfaces to the realization of 3-manifolds as coverings branched over knots and spanning both geometric topology and algebraic geometry. This work delves into branched coverings "à la Fox" of ( G , X )-manifolds, encompassing three main avenues: Firstly, we introduce a comprehensive class of singular ( G , X )-manifolds, elucidating elementary theory paired with illustrative examples to showcase its efficacy and universality. Secondly, building on Montesinos' work, we revisit and augment the prevailing knowledge, formulating a Galois theory tailored for such branched coverings. This includes a detailed portrayal of the fiber above branching points. Lastly, we identify local attributes that guarantee the existence of developing maps for singular ( G , X )-manifolds within the branched coverings framework. Notably, we pinpoint conditions that ensure the existence of developing maps for these singular manifolds. This research proves especially pertinent for non-metric singular ( G , X )-manifolds like those of Lorentzian or projective nature, as discussed by Barbot, Bonsante, Suhyoung Choi, Danciger, Seppi, Schlenker, and the author, among others. While examples are sprinkled throughout, a standout application presented is a uniformization theorem "à la Mess" for singular locally Minkowski manifolds exhibiting BTZ-like singularities.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that dg manifolds of finite positive amplitude, that is, bundles of positively graded curved $L_{\infty }[1]$-algebras, form a category of fibrant objects. As a main step in the proof, we obtain a factorization theorem using path spaces. First we construct an infinite-dimensional factorization of a diagonal morphism using actual path spaces motivated by the AKSZ construction. Then we cut down to finite dimensions using the Fiorenza-Manetti method. The main ingredient in our method is the homotopy transfer theorem for curved $L_{\infty }[1]$-algebras. As an application, we study the derived intersections of manifolds.

Sheaves of Higher Categories on Generalised Spaces

Abstract:We study the homotopy right Kan extension of homotopy sheaves on a category to its free cocompletion, i.e. to its category of presheaves. Any pretopology on the original category induces a canonical pretopology of generalised coverings on the free cocompletion. We show that with respect to these pretopologies the homotopy right Kan extension along the Yoneda embedding preserves homotopy sheaves valued in (sufficiently nice) simplicial model categories. Moreover, we show that this induces an equivalence between sheaves of spaces on the original category and colimit-preserving sheaves of spaces on its free cocompletion. We present three applications in geometry and topology: first, we prove that diffeological vector bundles descend along subductions of diffeological spaces. Second, we deduce that various flavours of bundle gerbes with connection satisfy $(\infty,2)$-categorical descent. Finally, we investigate smooth diffeomorphism actions in smooth bordism-type field theories on a manifold. We show how these smooth actions allow us to extract the values of a field theory on any object coherently from its values on generating objects of the bordism category.

Abstract:Studying coverings over algebraic varieties is an effective method in algebraic geometry. By combining the technique of triple cover from Miranda and Tan, we proved that if the degree of the branch divisor of a normal triple cover over $¶^2$ is no more than $18$ and not equal to $16$, then the trace-free bundle of the triple cover is uniform. Moreover, we totally classified all these trace-free bundles.

The multiplicity of cyclic coverings of a singularity of an algebraic variety

Abstract:Let $V$ be an affine algebraic variety, and let $p\in V$ be a singular point. For a regular function $g$ on $V$ such that $g(p)=0$ and for a positive integer $n$, we consider the cyclic covering $\phi_n\: V_n \to V$ of degree $n$ branched along the hypersurface defined by $g$. We will prove that for sufficiently large $n$, the tangent cone of $V_n$ at $\phi_n^{-1}(p)$ is, as an affine variety, the product of the tangent cone of the branch locus and the affine line. In particular, the multiplicity of the singularity $\phi_n^{-1}(p) \in V_n$, which is a function of $n$ determined by $V$ and $g$, remains constant for sufficiently large $n$. This result generalizes Tomaru's theorem for normal surface singularities.

Abstract:A theory of graded manifolds can be viewed as a generalization of differential geometry of smooth manifolds. It allows one to work with functions which locally depend not only on ordinary real variables, but also on Z -graded variables which can either commute or anticommute, according to their degree. To obtain a consistent global description of graded manifolds, one resorts to sheaves of graded commutative associative algebras on second countable Hausdorff topological spaces, locally isomorphic to a suitable "model space". This paper aims to build robust mathematical foundations of geometry of graded manifolds. Some known issues in their definition are resolved, especially the case where positively and negatively graded coordinates appear together. The focus is on a detailed exposition of standard geometrical constructions rather than on applications. Necessary excerpts from graded algebra and graded sheaf theory are included.

Abstract:The CSM class of a very affine manifold $U$ is represented by the rank drop locus of a general tuple of torus invariant 1-forms on it. This equality holds in the homology of any toric compactification $X\supset U$. It was proved for schön $U$ by Huh, and later for all $U$ in the homology of $X=CP^n$ by Maxim--Rodriguez--Wang--Wu, using Ginsburg's interpretation of CSM classes as Lagrangian cycles. We deduce this identity in full generality from properties of affine characteristic classes, give an explicit sufficient condition of general position for the 1-forms, and use it to extend the identity to non-torus invariant 1-forms. Along the way, we characterize very affine varieties of ML degree 0, and give a useful criterion for a family of varieties to have a constant tropical fan (``tropical isotopy theorem''). Our main idea is a technique to study very affine varieties without compactifying them. As a result we do not have to deal with singularities occuring at the boundary of the compactification, which would require less constructive methods (such as resolution of singularities). This is what enables us to give constructive genericity conditions in this Gauss--Bonnet theorem.

Abstract:We give a lattice-theoretic characterization for a manifold of type to be birational to some moduli space of (twisted) sheaves on a K3 surface. We apply it to the Li–Pertusi–Zhao variety of type associated to any smooth cubic fourfold. Moreover, we determine when a birational transformation is induced by an automorphism of the K3 surface, and we use this to classify all induced birational symplectic involutions.

We calculate a tight lower bound for the topological complexity of many small covers over a product of simplices. Then we compute symmetric topological complexity of several small covers over a product of simplices. We calculate the LS one-category of real Bott manifolds and infinitely many small covers.

Abstract:A degree $d$ genus $g$ cover of the complex projective line by a smooth curve $C$ yields a vector bundle on the projective line by pushforward of the structure sheaf. Which bundles are possible? Equivalently, which $\mathbb{P}^{d-2}$-bundles over $\mathbb{P}^1$ contain such covers? (In the language of many previous papers: what are the scrollar invariants of the cover?) We give a complete answer in degree $4$, which exhibits the expected pathologies. We describe a polytope (one per degree) which we propose gives the complete answer for primitive covers, i.e. covers that don't factor through a subcover. We show that all such bundles (for primitive covers) lie in this polytope, and that a ``positive proportion'' of the polytope arises from smooth covers. Moreover, we show the necessity of the primitivity assumption. Finally, we show that the map from the Hurwitz space of smooth covers to the space of bundles is not flat (for $d>3$ and $g \gg_d 0$).

Abstract:Motivated by classical Alexander invariants of affine hypersurface complements, we endow certain finite dimensional quotients of the homology of abelian covers of complex algebraic varieties with a canonical and functorial mixed Hodge structure (MHS). More precisely, we focus on covers which arise algebraically in the following way: if $U$ is a smooth connected complex algebraic variety and $G$ is a complex semiabelian variety, the pullback of the exponential map by an algebraic morphism $f:U\to G$ yields a covering space $\pi:U^f\to U$ whose group of deck transformations is $\pi_1(G)$. The new MHSs are compatible with Deligne's MHS on the homology of $U$ through the covering map $\pi$ and satisfy a direct sum decomposition as MHSs into generalized eigenspaces by the action of deck transformations. This provides a vast generalization of the previous results regarding univariable Alexander modules by Geske, Maxim, Wang and the authors. Lastly, we reduce the problem of whether the first Betti number of the Milnor fiber of a central hyperplane arrangement complement is combinatorial to a question about the Hodge filtration of certain MHSs defined in this paper, providing evidence that the new structures contain interesting information.
