In \cite{CreNguStr} for the case of infinite depth we proved rigorously that the spectrum of the water wave system linearized at small Stokes waves, with respect to transverse perturbations, contains unstable eigenvalues lying approximately on an ellipse. In this paper we consider the case of finite depth and prove that the same spectral instability result holds for all but finitely many values of the depth. The computations and some aspects of the theory are considerably more complicated in the finite depth case.

In 1981 McLean discovered via numerical methods that Stokes waves at infinite depth are unstable with respect to transverse perturbations of the initial data. Even for a Stokes wave that has very small amplitude $\varepsilon$, we prove rigorously that transverse perturbations, after linearization, will lead to exponential growth in time. To observe this instability, extensive calculations are required all the way up to order $O(\varepsilon^3)$. All previous rigorous results of this type were merely two-dimensional, in the sense that they only treated long-wave perturbations in the longitudinal direction. This is the first rigorous proof of three-dimensional instabilities of Stokes waves.

Abstract:We investigate the spectral instability of a $2\pi/\kappa$ periodic Stokes wave of sufficiently small amplitude, traveling in water of unit depth, under gravity. Numerical evidence suggests instability whenever the unperturbed wave is resonant with its infinitesimal perturbations. This has not been analytically studied except for the Benjamin--Feir instability in the vicinity of the origin of the complex plane. Here we develop a periodic Evans function approach to give an alternative proof of the Benjamin--Feir instability and, also, a first proof of spectral instability away from the origin. Specifically, we prove instability near the origin for $\kappa>\kappa_1:=1.3627827\dots$ and instability due to resonance of order two so long as an index function is positive. Validated numerics establishes that the index function is indeed positive for some $\kappa<\kappa_1$, whereby there exists a Stokes wave that is spectrally unstable even though it is insusceptible to the Benjamin--Feir instability. The proofs involve center manifold reduction, Floquet theory, and methods of ordinary and partial differential equations. Numerical evaluation reveals that the index function remains positive unless $\kappa=1.8494040\dots$. Therefore, we conjecture that all Stokes waves of sufficiently small amplitude are spectrally unstable. For the proof of the conjecture, one has to verify that the index function is positive for $\kappa$ sufficiently small.

Abstract:The paper fully answers a long standing open question concerning the stability/instability of pure gravity periodic traveling water waves—called Stokes waves—at the critical Whitham–Benjamin depth and nearby values. We prove that Stokes waves of small amplitude are, at the critical depth , linearly unstable under long wave perturbations. The same holds true for slightly smaller values of the depth , , depending on the amplitude of the wave. This problem was not rigorously solved in previous literature because the expansions degenerate at the critical depth. To solve this degenerate case, and describe in a mathematically exhaustive way how the eigenvalues change their stable-to-unstable nature along this shallow-to-deep water transient, we Taylor-expand the computations of Berti et al. (Arch Ration Mech Anal 247:91, 2023) at a higher degree of accuracy, starting from the fourth order expansion of the Stokes waves. We prove that also in this transient regime a pair of unstable eigenvalues depict a closed figure "8", of smaller size than for , as the Floquet exponent varies.

Abstract:The well-known Stokes waves refer to periodic traveling waves under the gravity at the free surface of a two dimensional full water wave system. In this paper, we prove that small-amplitude Stokes waves with infinite depth are nonlinearly unstable under long-wave perturbations. Our approach is based on the modulational approximation of the water wave system and the instability mechanism of the focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:We prove high-frequency modulational instability of small-amplitude Stokes waves in deep water under longitudinal perturbations, providing the first isola of unstable eigenvalues branching off from $\mathtt{i}\frac34$. Unlike the finite depth case this is a degenerate problem and the real part of the unstable eigenvalues has a much smaller size than in finite depth. By a symplectic version of Kato theory we reduce to search the eigenvalues of a $2\times 2$ Hamiltonian and reversible matrix which has eigenvalues with non-zero real part if and only if a certain analytic function is not identically zero. In deep water we prove that the Taylor coefficients up to order three of this function vanish, but not the fourth-order one.

Abstract:We consider steady surface waves in an infinitely deep two--dimensional ideal fluid with potential flow, focusing on high-amplitude waves near the steepest wave with a 120 degree corner at the crest. The stability of these solutions with respect to coperiodic and subharmonic perturbations is studied, using new matrix-free numerical methods. We provide evidence for a plethora of conjectures on the nature of the instabilities as the steepest wave is approached, especially with regards to the self-similar recurrence of the stability spectrum near the origin of the spectral plane.

On the instability of travelling wave solutions for the transport-Stokes equation

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the instability of the spherical travelling wave solutions for the Transport-Stokes system in $\mathbb{R}^3$. First, a classical scaling argument ensures instability among all probability measures for the Wasserstein metric and the $L^1$ norm. Secondly, we address the instability among patch solutions with a perturbed surface. To this end, we study the linearized system of a contour dynamics equation derived in [18] in the case where the support of the patch is axisymmetric and described by spherical parametrization. We investigate numerically the existence of positive eigenvalues, which ensures the instability of the linearized system. Eventually we recover numerically the instability of the travelling wave by solving the Transport-Stokes equation using a finite element method on FreeFem.

Gravity-capillary Waves Modulated by Linear Shear Flow in Arbitrary Water Depth

Abstract:Considering that the fluid is inviscid and incompressible and the flow is irrotational in a fixed frame of reference and using the multiple scale analysis method, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) describing the evolution dynamics of gravity-capillary wavetrains in arbitrary constant depth. The gravity-capillary waves (GCWs) are influenced by a linear shear flow (LSF) which consists of a uniform flow and a shear flow with constant vorticity. The modulational instability (MI) of GCWs with the LSF is analyzed using the NLSE. The MI is effectively modified by the LSF. In infinite depth, there are four asymptotes which are the boundaries between MI and modulational stability (MS) in the instability diagram. In addition, the dimensionless free surface elevation as a function of time for different dimensionless water depth, surface tension, uniform flow and vorticity is exhibited. It is found that the decay of free surface elevation and the steepness of free surface amplitude change over time, which are greatly affected by the water depth, surface tension, uniform flow and vorticity.

Abstract:We consider the stability of periodic gravity free-surface water waves traveling downstream at a constant speed over a shear flow of finite depth. In case the free surface is flat, a sharp criterion of linear instability is established for a general class of shear flows with inflection points and the maximal unstable wave number is found. Comparison to the rigid-wall setting testifies that free surface has a destabilizing effect. For a class of unstable shear flows, the bifurcation of nontrivial periodic traveling waves of small-amplitude is demonstrated at any wave number. We show the linear instability of small nontrivial waves bifurcated at an unstable wave number of the background shear flow. The proof uses a new formulation of the linearized water-wave problem and a perturbation argument. An example of the background shear flow of unstable small-amplitude periodic traveling waves is constructed for an arbitrary vorticity strength and for an arbitrary depth, illustrating that vorticity has a subtle influence on the stability of water waves.

Abstract:We make rigorous spectral stability analysis for non-resonant capillary-gravity waves as well as resonant Wilton ripples of sufficiently small amplitude. Our analysis is based on a periodic Evans function approach, developed recently by the authors for Stokes waves. On top of our previous work, we add to the approach new framework ingredients, including a two-stage Weierstrass preparation manipulation for the Periodic Evans function associated to the wave and the definition of a stability function as an analytic function of the wave amplitude parameter. These new ingredients are keys for proving stability near non-resonant frequencies and defining index functions ruling both stability and instability near non-zero resonant frequencies. We also prove that unstable bubble spectra near non-zero resonant frequencies form, at the leading order, either an ellipse or a circle and provide a justification for Creedon, Deconinck, and Trichtchenko's formal asymptotic expansion for the Floquet exponent. For non-resonant capillary-gravity waves for the stability near the origin of the complex plane, our stability results agree with the prediction from formal multi-scale expansion. New are our stability results near non-zero resonant frequencies. As the effects of surface tension vanish, our result recovers that for gravity waves. Also new are our stability results for Wilton ripples of small amplitude near the origin as well as near non-zero resonant frequencies.

Abstract:Concentric water waves are ubiquitous in nature and, under certain conditions, may exhibit azimuthal instabilities. Whereas transverse instability of their plane counterparts, governed by nearly plane Korteweg–de Vries and nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the shallow and deep water limits, respectively, have been extensively studied as enabled by the existence of localized solitons, in the cylindrical case stability analysis is impeded by the corresponding finite-amplitude waves being non-localized. The equations, governing such waves, emerge from a balance between dispersive and nonlinear effects and, in particular, admit non-localized solutions of self-similar form. It is the goal of the present work to study transverse stability of such solutions, in both the shallow and deep water limits, as a function of surface tension (a Weber We number). Whereas in the shallow water case, a nearly concentric Korteweg–de Vries equation has been previous deduced, a deep water weakly nonlinear model has not been established yet. With a systematic derivation in cylindrical coordinates, we demonstrate that the appropriate envelope equation becomes of the nearly concentric nonlinear Schrödinger type with time-dependent coefficients. Transverse stability analyses of the concentric self-similar solutions to these models indicate crucial differences from the plane configurations revealing the effects of cylindrical geometry, direction of the base-state wave propagation, and its amplitude variation. In particular, the azimuthal perturbations do not admit, in general, a regular periodic structure, except for the short-wavelength perturbations on deep water which are either stretched or compressed with time as depending on whether the base state concentric wave is traveling outward or inward. In the shallow-water case, transient azimuthal growth of outgoing finite-amplitude concentric waves is observed for all We in contrast to the plane solitons case, in which there exists a nonzero critical We ; also, inward-traveling cylindrical waves are unstable for all values of We . In the deep-water case, azimuthal perturbations of outward-traveling cylindrical wave are stable in the long-time limit, but experience transient growth for short times when . As for inward-traveling waves, transverse perturbations grow for all We . These observations are at variance with the plane deep water geometry, in which transverse instability is observed for all We .

Infinitely many isolas of modulational instability for Stokes waves

Abstract:We prove the long-standing conjecture regarding the existence of infinitely many high-frequency modulational instability ``isolas" for a Stokes wave in arbitrary depth $ \mathtt{h} > 0 $, subject to longitudinal perturbations. We completely describe the spectral bands with non-zero real part away from the origin of the $L^2(\mathbb{R})$-spectrum of the water waves system linearized at a Stokes waves of small amplitude $ \epsilon > 0 $. The unstable spectrum is the union of isolas of elliptical shape, parameterized by integers $ \mathtt{p}\geq 2 $, with semiaxis of size $ |\beta_1^{(\mathtt{p})} (\mathtt{h})| \epsilon^\mathtt{p}+ O(\epsilon^{\mathtt{p}+1} )$ where $\beta_1^{( \mathtt{p})} (\mathtt{h})$ is a nonzero analytic function of the depth $ \mathtt{h} $ that depends on the Taylor coefficients of the Stokes waves up to order $\mathtt{p}$.

Three-dimensional Instability in the Wake of a Pitching Foil

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the three-dimensional transition of a propulsive wake, which is generated by a pitching foil, mimicking the caudal fin of a fish. We note that a fish fin is usually of very short aspect ratio, here we assume an infinite span, aiming to reveal the fundamental physical mechanisms. For the base flow, three sequential wake structures are identified as we increase the pitching amplitude, while fixing the pitching frequency. They are Benard-von Karman (BvK) vortex street, reverse BvK vortex street and deflected wake, respectively. Through Floquet analysis, we observe an unstable mode at the wavelength lambda(z) = 0.21, while another mode also becomes critical with a longer wavelength at lambda(z) = 1.05. However, we point out that the long wavelength mode can not be observed physically, because its growth rate is always less than the short wavelength mode. The long wavelength mode resembles that of the so-called mode A in the drag wake of a fixed bluff body. While the short wavelength mode repeats the perturbation field every second cycle of the base flow. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Proof of the Stokes conjecture for compressible gravity water waves

Abstract:In 1880, Stokes examined an incompressible irrotational periodic traveling water wave under the influence of gravity and conjectured the existence of an extreme wave with a corner of $120^{\circ}$ at the crest. The first rigorous proof of the conjecture was given by Amick, Fraenkel and Toland, as well as by Plotnikov independently via the Nekrasov integral equation. In the early 2010s, Weiss and Varvarucva revisited the conjecture by applying a new geometric method, which provided an affirmative answer to the conjecture without requiring structural assumptions such as the isolation of the stagnation points, the symmetry and the monotonicity of the free surface that were necessary in the previous works. The main purpose of this paper is to establish the validity of the Stokes conjecture in the context of compressible gravity water waves. More precisely, we prove that a sharp crest forms near each stagnation point of a compressible gravity water wave with an included angle of $120^{\circ}$, which gives a first proof to the compressible counterpart of the classical conjecture by Stokes in 1880. The central aspect of our approach is the discovery of a new monotonicity formula for quasilinear free boundary problems of the Bernoulli-type. Another observation is the introduction of a new nonlinear frequency formula, along with a compensated compactness argument for the compressible Euler system. The developed monotonicity formula enables us to do blow-up analysis at each stagnation point and helps us obtain the singular profile of the free surface near each stagnation points. The degenerate stagnation points can be further analyzed with the help of the compensated compactness argument using the frequency formula.

Multidimensional stability and transverse bifurcation of hydraulic shocks and roll waves in open channel flow

Abstract:We study by a combination of analytical and numerical methods multidimensional stability and transverse bifurcation of planar hydraulic shock and roll wave solutions of the inviscid Saint Venant equations for inclined shallow-water flow, both in the whole space and in a channel of finite width, obtaining complete stability diagrams across the full parameter range of existence. Technical advances include development of efficient multi-d Evans solvers, low- and high-frequency asymptotics, explicit/semi-explicit computation of stability boundaries, and rigorous treatment of channel flow with wall-type physical boundary. Notable behavioral phenomena are a novel essential transverse bifurcation of hydraulic shocks to invading planar periodic roll-wave or doubly-transverse periodic herringbone patterns, with associated metastable behavior driven by mixed roll- and herringbone-type waves initiating from localized perturbation of an unstable constant state; and Floquet-type transverse ``flapping'' bifurcation of roll wave patterns.

Abstract:Abstract This study is concerned with the large time behaviour of the three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier–Stokes–Korteweg equations, which are used to model viscous and compressible fluids with internal capillarity. Based on the fact that the rarefaction wave is nonlinearly stable to the one-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier–Stokes–Korteweg equations, the planar rarefaction wave to the three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier–Stokes–Korteweg equations is first constructed. Then it is shown that the planar rarefaction wave is asymptotically stable in the case that the initial data are a suitably small perturbation of the planar rarefaction wave and the strength of the rarefaction wave is small. The proof is based on the delicate energy method. The result indicate that the planar rarefaction wave of the inviscid Euler system is stable for the three-dimensional isentropic compressible fluids with physical viscosities and internal capillarity.

Abstract:The present work shows that essentially all small-amplitude periodic traveling waves of the electronic Euler-Poisson system are spectrally unstable. This instability is neither modulational nor co-periodic, and thus requires an unusual spectral analysis and, beyond specific computations, newly devised arguments. The growth rate with respect to the amplitude of the background waves is also provided when the instability occurs.

Abstract:Both Schwartz ( J. Fluid Mech. , vol. 62 (3), 1974, pp. 553–578) and Cokelet ( Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. , vol. 286 (1335), 1977, pp. 183–230) failed to gain convergent results for limiting Stokes waves in extremely shallow water by means of perturbation methods, even with the aid of extrapolation techniques such as the Padé approximant. In particular, it is extremely difficult for traditional analytic/numerical approaches to present the wave profile of limiting waves with a sharp crest of $120^{\circ }$ included angle first mentioned by Stokes in the 1880s. Thus, traditionally, different wave models are used for waves in different water depths. In this paper, by means of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), an analytic approximation method for highly nonlinear equations, we successfully gain convergent results (and especially the wave profiles) of the limiting Stokes waves with this kind of sharp crest in arbitrary water depth, even including solitary waves of extreme form in extremely shallow water, without using any extrapolation techniques. Therefore, in the frame of the HAM, the Stokes wave can be used as a unified theory for all kinds of waves, including periodic waves in deep and intermediate depths, cnoidal waves in shallow water and solitary waves in extremely shallow water.
