Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve a class of Neumann problems on a manifold with totally geodesic smooth boundary. As a consequence, we also solve the prescribing k-curvature problem of the modified Schouten tensor on such manifolds; that is, if the initial k-curvature of the modified Schouten tensor is positive for tau > n - 1 or negative for tau < 1, then there exists a conformal metric such that its k-curvature defined by the modified Schouten tensor equals some prescribed function and the boundary remains totally geodesic.

Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed kth order symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor on compact Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution set for the case k >= n/2, provided the conformal class admits a k-admissible metric. These results have been proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky, Trudinger and Wang for the manifolds without boundary, and by Jin et al. and S. Chen for the locally conformally flat manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds endowed with a continuous metric and the metric is smooth away from a compact subset with certain conditions. If the metric is Lipschitz and the scalar curvature is nonnegative away from a closed subset with (n - 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure zero, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. The Hausdorff measure condition is optimal, which confirms a conjecture of Lee in 2013. The proof of the nonnegativity is based on a smoothing argument with some new estimates such as a L-1-scalar curvature approximation estimates. The proof of the rigidity relies on the RCD theory where we show that the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. The idea involving RCD theory in the proof turns out to be much more suitable in the study of the rigidity for continuous metrics. Furthermore, our result generalizes the result of Lee and LeFloch (Commun Math Phys 339(1):99-120, 2015) from spin to non-spin.

Abstract:We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal CMC foliation of $X$ that describes relationships between the geometry and topology of the leaves, including the property that there exist compact leaves for every attained value of the mean curvature.

Abstract:We study a version of Calderón's problem for harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds. By using the higher linearization method, we first show that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map determines the metric on the domain up to a natural gauge in three cases: on surfaces, on analytic manifolds, and in conformally transversally anisotropic manifolds on a fixed conformal class with injective ray transform on the transversal manifold. Next, using higher linearizations we obtain integral identities that allows us to show that the metrics on the target have the same jets at one point. In particular, if the target is analytic, the metrics are equal. We also prove an energy rigidity result, in the sense that the Dirichlet energies of harmonic maps determines the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map.

Rigidity in the Lorentzian Calderón problem with formally determined data

Abstract:We study the Lorentzian Calderón problem, where the objective is to determine a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metric up to a boundary fixing diffeomorphism from boundary measurements given by the hyperbolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. This problem is a wave equation analogue of the Calderón problem on Riemannian manifolds. We prove that if a globally hyperbolic metric agrees with the Minkowski metric outside a compact set and has the same hyperbolic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map as the Minkowski metric, then it must be the Minkowski metric up to diffeomorphism. In fact we prove the same result with a much smaller amount of measurements, thus solving a formally determined inverse problem. To prove these results we introduce a new method for geometric hyperbolic inverse problems. The method is based on distorted plane wave solutions and on a combination of geometric, topological and unique continuation arguments.

Abstract:We prove that the metric tensor $g$ of a complete Riemannian manifold is uniquely determined, up to isometry, from the knowledge of a local source-to-solution operator. This later is associated to a fractional power of the Laplace-Belrami operator $\Delta_g$. Our result holds under the condition that the metric tensor $g$ is known in an arbitrary small subdomain. We also consider the case of closed manifolds and provide an improvement of the main result in \cite{FGKU}

Abstract:We consider the Calderón problem for systems with unknown zeroth and first order terms, and improve on previously known results. More precisely, let $(M, g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, let $A$ be a connection matrix on $E = M \times \mathbb{C}^r$ and let $Q$ be a matrix potential. Let $\Lambda_{A, Q}$ be the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of the associated connection Laplacian with a potential. Under the assumption that $(M, g)$ is isometrically contained in the interior of $(\mathbb{R}^2 \times M_0, c(e \oplus g_0))$, where $(M_0, g_0)$ is an arbitrary compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, $e$ is the Euclidean metric on $\mathbb{R}^2$, and $c > 0$, we show that $\Lambda_{A, Q}$ uniquely determines $(A, Q)$ up to natural gauge invariances. This generalises earlier work of Eskin to anisotropic geometries. Moreover, we introduce new concepts of complex ray transform and complex parallel transport problem, and study their fundamental properties and relations to the Calderón problem.

Abstract:In this paper we prove two results. The first shows that the Dirichlet-Neumann map of the operator $\Delta_g+q$ on a Riemannian surface can determine its topological, differential, and metric structure. Earlier work of this type assumes a priori that the surface is a planar domain [36] or that the geometry is a priori known [29]. We will then apply this result to study a geometric inverse problem for determining minimal surfaces embedded in $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. In particular we will show that knowledge of the volumes of embedded minimal surfaces determine not only their topological and differential structure but also their Riemannian structure as an embedded hypersurface. Such geometric inverse problems are partially inspired by the physical models proposed by the AdS/CFT correspondence. The crucial ingredient in removing the planar domain assumption is the determination of the boundary trace of holomorphic functions from knowledge of the Dirichlet-Neumann map of $\Delta_g +q$. This requires a new type of argument involving Carleman estimates and construction of CGO whose phase functions are not Morse as in the case of [29]. We anticipate that these techniques could be of use for studying other inverse problems in geometry and PDE.

A Calderón Problem for Beltrami Fields

Abstract:On a $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary, we define an analogue of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for Beltrami fields, which are the eigenvectors of the curl operator and play a major role in fluid mechanics. This map sends the normal component of a Beltrami field to its tangential component on the boundary. In this paper we establish two results showing how this normal-to-tangential map encodes geometric information on the underlying manifold. First, we show that the normal-to-tangential map is a pseudodifferential operator of order zero on the boundary whose total symbol determines the Taylor series of the metric at the boundary. Second, we go on to show that a real-analytic simply connected $3$-manifold can be reconstructed from its normal-to-tangential map. Interestingly, since Green's functions do not exist for the Beltrami field equation, a key idea of the proof is to find an appropriate substitute, which turn out to have a natural physical interpretation as the magnetic fields generated by small current loops.

Abstract:We study an analog of the anisotropic Calderón problem for fractional Schrödinger operators $(-\Delta_g)^\alpha + V$ with $\alpha \in (0,1)$ on closed Riemannian manifolds of dimensions two and higher. We prove that the knowledge of a Cauchy data set of solutions of the fractional Schrödinger equation, given on an open nonempty a priori known subset of the manifold determines both the Riemannian manifold up to an isometry and the potential up to the corresponding gauge transformation, under certain geometric assumptions on the manifold as well as the observation set. Our method of proof is based on: (i) studying a new variant of the Gel'fand inverse spectral problem without the normalization assumption on the energy of eigenfunctions, and (ii) the discovery of an entanglement principle for nonlocal equations involving two or more compactly supported functions. Our solution to (i) makes connections to antipodal sets as well as local control for eigenfunctions and quantum chaos, while (ii) requires sharp interpolation results for holomorphic functions. We believe that both of these results can find applications in other areas of inverse problems.

Abstract:In this paper I consider the inverse boundary value problem for a quasilinear, anisotropic, elliptic equation of the form $\nabla\cdot(\gamma\nabla u+|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)=0$, where $\gamma$ is a smooth, matrix valued, function with a uniform lower bound. I show that boundary Dirichlet and Neumann data for this equation, in the form of a Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, determine the coefficient matrix uniquely, in dimension 3 and higher. This stands in contrast to the classical linear anisotropic Calderón problem where there is a known obstruction to uniqueness due to the invariance of the boundary data under transformations of the equation via any boundary fixing diffeomorphism.

Abstract:We consider the fractional anisotropic Calderón problem for the nonlocal parabolic equation $(\partial_t -\Delta_g)^s u=f$ ($0<s<1$) on closed Riemannian manifolds. More concretely, we can determine the Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ up to isometry by using the local source-to-solution map in an arbitrarily small open cylinder in the spacetime domain. This can be regarded as a nonlocal analog of the anisotropic Calderón problem in the parabolic setting. We also study several useful properties for nonlocal parabolic operators by using comprehensive spectrum analysis with semigroup theory.
