Abstract:Nonabelian gauge theories are chaotic in the classical limit. We discuss new evidence from SU(2) lattice gauge theory that they are also chaotic at the quantum level. We also describe possible future studies aimed at discovering the consequences of this insight.

Abstract:We study the classical nonlinear dynamics of the SU(2) Yang-Mills matrix model introduced in [ Mod. Phys. Lett. A 30 , 1550080 (2015)] as a low-energy approximation to two-color QCD. Restricting to the spin-0 sector of the model, we unearth an unexpected tetrahedral symmetry, which endows the dynamics with an extraordinarily rich structure. Among other things, we find that the spin-0 sector contains coexisting chaotic subsectors as well as nested chaotic "basins", and displays alternation between regular and chaotic dynamics as energy is varied. The symmetries also grant us a considerable amount of analytic control which allows us to make several quantitative observations. We see that the classical spin-0 sector has a rich phase structure, arising from ergodicity breaking. Surprisingly, we find that many of these classical phases display numerous similarities to previously discovered quantum phases of the spin-0 sector [ J. Math. Phys. Entanglement Properties of SU(2) Gauge Theory

Abstract:We review recent and present new results on thermalization of nonabelian gauge theory obtained by exact numerical simulation of the real-time dynamics of two-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We discuss: (1) tests confirming the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis; (2) the entanglement entropy of sublattices, including the Page curve, the transition from area to volume scaling with increasing energy of the eigenstate and its time evolution that shows thermalization of localized regions to be a two-step process; (3) the absence of quantum many-body scars for $j_{\rm max}>1/2$; (4) the spectral form factor, which exhibits the expected slope-ramp-plateau structure for late times; (5) the entanglement Hamiltonian for SU(2), which has properties in accordance with the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem; and (6) a measure for non-stabilizerness or "magic" that is found to reach its maximum during thermalization. We conclude that the thermalization of nonabelian gauge theories is a promising process to establish quantum advantage.

Probing universal dynamics with topological data analysis in a gluonic plasma

Abstract:We study nonequilibrium dynamics of SU(2) lattice gauge theory in Minkowski space-time in a classical-statistical regime, where characteristic gluon occupancies are much larger than unity. In this strongly correlated system far from equilibrium, the correlations of energy and topological densities show self-similar behavior related to a turbulent cascade towards higher momentum scales. We employ persistent homology to infer topological features of the gluonic plasma via a hierarchy of simplicial and cubical complexes. All topological observables under investigation are also manifestly gauge invariant and are shown to exhibit self-similar evolution, which relate the spatial and temporal properties of the plasma in terms of universal scaling exponents and functions. The findings may help to understand the early stages of heavy-ion collisions in the limit of high energies, and our methods can also facilitate the topological analysis of other complex systems such as encountered in experiments with ultracold quantum gases.

Turbulence in nonabelian gauge theory

Abstract:Kolmogorov wave turbulence plays an important role for the thermalization process following plasma instabilities in nonabelian gauge theories. We show that classical-statistical simulations in SU(2) gauge theory indicate a Kolmogorov scaling exponent known from scalar models. In the range of validity of resummed perturbation theory this result is shown to agree with analytical estimates. We study the effect of classical-statistical versus quantum corrections and demonstrate that the latter lead to the absence of turbulence in the far ultraviolet.

Chiral instabilities & the fate of chirality imbalance in non-Abelian plasmas

Abstract:We present a first principles study of chiral plasma instabilities and axial charge transfer in non-Abelian plasmas with a strong gauge-matter coupling $g^2N_f=64$, by performing $3+1$ D real-time classical-statistical lattice simulation with dynamical fermions. We explicitly demonstrate for the first time that -- unlike in an Abelian plasma -- the transfer of chirality from the matter sector to the gauge fields occurs predominantly due to topological sphaleron transitions. We elaborate on the similarities and differences of the axial charge dynamics in cold Abelian $U(1)$ and non-Abelian $SU(2)$ plasmas, and comment on the implications of our findings for the study of anomalous transport phenomena, such as the chiral magnetic effect in QCD matter.

Abstract:We test the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) for 2+1 dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory. By considering the theory on a chain of plaquettes and truncating basis states for link variables at $j=1/2$, we can map it onto a quantum spin chain with local interactions and numerically exactly diagonalize the Hamiltonian for reasonably large lattice sizes. We find energy level repulsion in momentum sectors with no remaining discrete symmetry. We study two local observables made up of Wilson loops and calculate their matrix elements in the energy eigenbasis, which are shown consistent with the ETH.

Abstract:We investigate the deconfinement transition in SU(Nc) gauge theories, and properties of the deconfined phase. A detailed lattice study of SU(4) and SU(6) gauge theories are conducted, and finite volume and cutoff effects on thermodynamic observables are studied. The scaling of the deconfinement transition point with lattice spacing is used to calculate the scale, Lambda_MSbar. The continuum estimates of the thermodynamic quantities are used to study properties of the gluon plasma. In particular, the approach to conformal limit is studied. We do not find any evidence of a strongly coupled, conformal phase in these theories.

Fate of Chiral Symmetries in the Quark-Gluon Plasma from an Instanton-Based Random Matrix Model of QCD

Abstract:We propose a new way of understanding how chiral symmetry is realized in the high temperature phase of QCD. Based on the finding that a simple free instanton gas precisely describes the details of the lowest part of the spectrum of the lattice overlap Dirac operator, we propose an instanton-based random matrix model of QCD with dynamical quarks. Simulations of this model reveal that even for small quark mass the Dirac spectral density has a singularity at the origin, caused by a dilute gas of free instantons. Even though the interaction, mediated by light dynamical quarks creates small instanton-antiinstanton molecules, those do not influence the singular part of the spectrum, and this singular part is shown to dominate Banks-Casher type sums in the chiral limit. By generalizing the Banks-Casher formula for the singular spectrum, we show that in the chiral limit the chiral condensate vanishes if there are at least two massless flavors. Our model also indicates a possible way of resolving a long-standing debate, as it suggests that for two massless quark flavors the $U(1)_{A}$ symmetry is likely to remain broken up to arbitrarily high finite temperatures.

Symmetry Classification and Universality in Non-Hermitian Many-Body Quantum Chaos by the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

Abstract:Spectral correlations are a powerful tool to study the dynamics of quantum many-body systems. For Hermitian Hamiltonians, quantum chaotic motion is related to random matrix theory spectral correlations. Based on recent progress in the application of spectral analysis to non-Hermitian quantum systems, we show that local level statistics, which probe the dynamics around the Heisenberg time, of a non-Hermitian q -body Sachdev-Ye-Kitev (nHSYK) model with N Majorana fermions, and its chiral and complex-fermion extensions, are also well described by random matrix theory for q>2 , while for q=2 , they are given by the equivalent of Poisson statistics. For that comparison, we combine exact diagonalization numerical techniques with analytical results obtained for some of the random matrix spectral observables. Moreover, depending on q and N , we identify 19 out of the 38 non-Hermitian universality classes in the nHSYK model, including those corresponding to the tenfold way. In particular, we realize explicitly 14 out of the 15 universality classes corresponding to non-pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians that involve universal bulk correlations of classes AI† and AII† , beyond the Ginibre ensembles. Abstract:In a new Weyl 2-spinor approach to Non abelian Gauge Theories, starting with the local U(1) Gauge group of a previous work, we study now the SU(3) case corresponding to quarks (antiquarks) interacting with color fields. The principal difference with the conventional approach is that particle-field interactions are not described by means of potentials but by the field strength magnitudes. Some analytical expressions showing similarities with electrodynamics are obtained. Classical equations that describe the behavior of quarks under gluon fields might be in principle applied to the quark-gluon plasma phase existing during the first instants of the Universe.

Disorder operators and magnetic vortices in SU(N) lattice gauge theory

Abstract:We construct the most general disorder operator for SU(N) lattice gauge theory in $(2+1)$ dimension by using exact duality transformations. These disorder operators, defined on the plaquettes and characterized by ($\text{N}-1$) angles, are the creation \& annihilation or the shift operators for the SU(N) magnetic vortices carrying $(\text{N}-1)$ types of magnetic fluxes. They are dual to the SU(N) Wilson loop order operators which, on the other hand, are the creation-annihilation or shift operators for the $(\text{N}-1)$ electric fluxes on their loops. The new order-disorder algebra involving SU(N) Wigner D matrices is derived and discussed. The $Z_\text{N} (\in $ SU(N)) 't Hooft operator is obtained as a special limit. In this limit we also recover the standard Wilson-'t Hooft order-disorder algebra. The partition function representation and the free energies of these SU(N) magnetic vortices are discussed.

Abstract:The author reviews in a pedagogical fashion some of the recent developments in lattice quantum chromodynamics. This review emphasizes explicit examples and illustrations rather than general proofs and analyses. It begins with a discussion of the heavy-quark potential in continuum quantum chromodynamics. Asymptotic freedom and renormalization-group improved perturbation theory are discussed. A simple dielectric model of confinement is considered as an intuitive guide to the vacuum of non-Abelian gauge theories. Next, the Euclidean form of lattice gauge theory is introduced, and an assortment of calculational methods are reviewed. These include high-temperature expansions, duality, Monte Carlo computer simulations, and weak coupling expansions. A Λ- parameter calculation for asymptotically free-spin models is presented. The Hamiltonian formulation of lattice gauge theory is presented and is illustrated in the context of flux tube dynamics. Roughening transitions, Casimir forces, and the restoration of rotational symmetry are discussed. Mechanisms of confinement in lattice theories are illustrated in the two-dimensional electrodynamics of the planar model and the U(1) gauge theory in four dimensions. Generalized actions for SU(2) gauge theories and the relevance of monopoles and strings to crossover phenomena are considered. A brief discussion of the continuity of fields and topological charge in asymptotically free lattice models is presented. The final major topic of this review concerns lattice fermions. The species doubling problem and its relation to chiral symmetry are illustrated. Staggered Euclidean fermion methods are discussed in detail, with an emphasis on species counting, remnants of chiral symmetry, Block spin variables, and the axial anomaly. Numerical methods for including fermions in computer simulations are considered. Jacobi and Gauss-Siedel inversion methods to obtain the fermion propagator in a background gauge field are reviewed. Langevin, pseudofermion Monte Carlo methods, and random walk methods are discussed, as are proposals for including the fermion determinant in computer simulations. Finally, spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in lattice models is discussed. The review ends with brief remarks about present research directions.

Anomalies and Dynamics in Strongly-Coupled Gauge Theories, New Criteria for Different Phases, and a Lesson from Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

Abstract:We review recent developments in our understanding of the dynamics of strongly-coupled chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories in four dimensions, problems which are potentially important in our quest to go beyond the standard $SU(3)_{QCD} \times (SU(2) \times U(1))_{GWS}$ model of the fundamental interactions. The generalized symmetries and associated new 't Hooft anomaly-matching constraints allow us to exclude, in a wide class of chiral gauge theories, confining vacuum with full flavor symmetries supported by a set of color-singlet massless composite fermions. The color-flavor-locked dynamical Higgs phase, dynamical Abelianization or more general symmetry breaking phase, appear as plausible IR dynamics, depending on the massless matter fermions present. We revisit and discuss critically several well-known confinement criteria in the literature, for both chiral and vectorlike gauge theories, and propose tentative, new criteria for discriminating different phases. Finally, we review an idea which might sound rather surprising at first, but is indeed realized in some softly-broken supersymmetric theories, that confinement in QCD is a small deformation (in the IR end of the renormalization-group flow) of a strongly-coupled, nonlocal, nonAbelian conformal fixed point.

Understanding the approach to thermalization from the eigenspectrum of non-Abelian gauge theories

Abstract:We study the spectral properties of SU(3) gauge theory with and without dynamical quarks (QCD) at thermal equilibrium using lattice gauge theory techniques. By measuring eigenstates of a massless overlap Dirac operator on the gauge configurations, we provide a gauge invariant method to study spectral properties of non-Abelian gauge theories. Whereas the majority of these eigenstates below the magnetic scale have universal nearest-neighbor level spacing fluctuations consistent with certain class of random matrix theories at temperatures away from the chiral crossover transition in QCD, a few among them start to become prominent just above the crossover forming clusters percolating over the entire volume. By matching the non-perturbative magnetic scales in a high temperature thermal state and a particular non-equilibrium chaotic state of QCD, we provide an estimate of thermalization time $\sim 1.44$ fm/c.

Fast Scrambling at the Boundary

Abstract:Many-body systems which saturate the quantum bound on chaos are attracting interest across a wide range of fields. Notable examples include the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and its variations, all characterised by some form or randomness and all to all couplings. Here we study many-body quantum chaos in a quantum impurity model showing Non-Fermi-Liquid physics, the overscreened multichannel $SU(N)$ Kondo model. We compute exactly the low-temperature behavior of the out-of time order correlator in the limit of large $N$ and large number of channels $K$, at fixed ratio $\gamma=K/N$. Due to strong correlations at the impurity site the spin fractionalizes in auxiliary fermions and bosons. We show that all the degrees of freedom of our theory acquire a Lyapunov exponent which is linear in temperature as $T\rightarrow 0$, with a prefactor that depends on $\gamma$. Remarkably, for $N=K$ the impurity spin displays maximal chaos, while bosons and fermions only get up to half of the maximal Lyapunov exponent. Our results highlights two new features: a non-disordered model which is maximally chaotic due to strong correlations at its boundary and a fractionalization of quantum chaos.

Abstract:Non-Abelian gauge fields provide a conceptual framework for the description of particles having spins. The theoretical importance of non-Abelian gauge fields motivates their experimental synthesis and explorations. Here, we demonstrate non-Abelian lattice gauge fields for photons. In the study of gauge fields, lattice models are essential for the understanding of their implications in extended systems. We utilize the platform of synthetic frequency dimensions, which enables the study of lattice physics in a scalable and programmable way. We observe Dirac cones at time-reversal-invariant momenta as well as the direction reversal of eigenstate trajectories associated with such Dirac cones. Both of them are unique signatures of non-Abelian gauge fields in our lattice system. Our results highlight the implications of non-Abelian gauge field in the study of topological physics and suggest opportunities for the control of photon spins and pseudospins.
