Abstract:We prove the uniqueness for an inverse problem of determining a matrix coefficient $P(x)$ of a system of evolution equations $\sigma \ppp_t u = \ppp_x^2 u(t,x) - P(x) u(t,x)$ for $0<x<\ell$ and $0<t<T$, where $\ell>0$ and $T>0$ are arbitrarily given. The uniqueness results assert that two solutions have the same Cauchy data at $x=0$ over $(0,T)$ and the same initial value or the final value which is positive on $[0,\ell]$, then the zeroth-order coefficient is uniquely determined on $[0,\ell]$. The uniqueness for inverse coefficient problem for a system of evolution equations without boundary conditions over the whole boundary is an open problem even in the one-dimension in the case where only initial value is given as spatial data. Moreover, in the case of the zero initial condition, we prove the uniqueness in the half of the spatial interval.

Abstract:This article is concerned with an inverse problem of simultaneously determining a spatially varying coefficient and a Robin coefficient for a one-dimensional fractional diffusion equation with a time-fractional derivative of order $\alpha\in(0,1)$. We prove the uniqueness for the inverse problem by observation data at one interior point over a finite time interval, provided that a coefficient is known on a subinterval. Our proof is based on the uniqueness in the inverse spectracl problem for a Sturm-Liouville problem by means of the Weyl $m$-function and the spectral representation of the solution to an initial-boundary value problem for the fractional diffusion equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an initial/boundary value problem for a fractional diffusion equation in a bounded domain Ω: where is the Caputo derivative and 0 < α < 2, α ≠ 1. We discuss an inverse problem of determining spatial coefficient p(x), x ∈ Ω and/or order α of the fractional derivative by data u|ω × (0, T), where ω⊂Ω is a sub-domain. Our main result is the uniqueness under conditions where the initial value is positive and ω is a neighbourhood of ∂Ω. The proof is done by transforming the solution u to the solution of the wave equation.

Abstract:In this work we investigate an inverse coefficient problem for the one-dimensional subdiffusion model, which involves a Caputo fractional derivative in time. The inverse problem is to determine two coefficients and multiple parameters (the order, and length of the interval) from one pair of lateral Cauchy data. The lateral Cauchy data are given on disjoint sets in time with a single excitation and the measurement is made on a time sequence located outside the support of the excitation. We prove two uniqueness results for different lateral Cauchy data. The analysis is based on the solution representation, analyticity of the observation and a refined version of inverse Sturm-Liouville theory due to Sini [35]. Our results heavily exploit the memory effect of fractional diffusion for the unique recovery of the coefficients in the model. Several numerical experiments are also presented to complement the analysis.

Abstract:We consider an inverse problem of determining a coefficient $p(x)$ of an evolution equation $\sigma\ppp_tu = a(x)\ppp_x^2u - p(x)u$ for $0<x<\ell$ and $0<t<T$, where $\sigma \in \C \setminus \{0\}$, $\ell>0$ and $T>0$ are arbitrarily given. Our main result is the uniqueness: by assuming that the zeros of initial value $b(x):= u(0,x)$ on $[0, \ell]$ is a finite set and each zero is of order one at most, if two solutions have the same Cauchy data at $x=0$ over $(0,T)$ and the same initial value $b(x)$, then the coefficient $p(x)$ is uniquely determined on $[0,\ell]$.

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional fractional diffusion equation: partial derivative(alpha)(t) u(x, t) = partial derivative/partial derivative x (p(x) partial derivative u/partial derivative x (x, t)), 0 < x < l, where 0 < alpha < 1 and partial derivative(alpha)(t) denotes the Caputo derivative in time of order alpha. We attach the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition at x = 0, l and the initial value given by the Dirac delta function. We prove that alpha and p(x), 0 < x < l, are uniquely determined by data u(0, t), 0 < t < T. The uniqueness result is a theoretical background in experimentally determining the order alpha of many anomalous diffusion phenomena which are important, for example, in environmental engineering. The proof is based on the eigenfunction expansion of the weak solution to the initial value/boundary value problem and the Gel'fand-Levitan theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an inverse problem of recovering the zeroth‐order coefficient and fractional order simultaneously in a time‐fractional reaction‐diffusion‐wave equation by using boundary measurement data from both of uniqueness and numerical method. We prove the uniqueness of the considered inverse problem and the Lipschitz continuity of the forward operator. Then the inverse problem is formulated into a variational problem by the Tikhonov‐type regularization. Based on the continuity of the forward operator, we prove that the minimizer of the Tikhonov‐type functional exists and converges to the exact solution under an a priori choice of regularization parameter. The steepest descent method combined with Nesterov acceleration is adopted to solve the variational problem. Three numerical examples are presented to support the efficiency and rationality of our proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the inverse problem of finding a time-dependent multiplier of the right-hand side of a time-fractional one-dimensional diffusion equation with variables coefficients in the case where the usual Cauchy, homogeneous Dirichlet boundary, and an integral overdetermination conditions are given. The overdetermination condition has the form of an integral with a weight over a spatial segment from the solution of the direct problem, in which the weight function is a spatially dependent known factor of the right-hand side of the equation. This made it possible to construct a solution to the inverse problem in explicit form and prove its correctness in the class of regular solutions

Abstract:In the present paper we study inverse problems related to determining the time-dependent coefficient and unknown source function of fractional heat equations. Our approach shows that having just one set of data at an observation point ensures the existence of a weak solution for the inverse problem. Furthermore, if there is an additional datum at the observation point, it leads to a specific formula for the time-dependent source coefficient. Moreover, we investigate inverse problems involving non-local data and recovering the space-dependent source function of the fractional heat equation.

Abstract:We propose a method for determining the solution and source term of a generalized time-fractional diffusion equation. The method is based on selecting a bi-orthogonal basis of L2 space corresponding to a nonself-adjoint boundary value problem. Uniqueness is proven and an existence result is obtained for smooth initial and final conditions. The asymptotic behavior of the generalized Mittag–Leffler function is used to relax the smoothness requirement on these conditions.

Abstract:This article investigates the uniqueness of simultaneously determining the diffusion coefficient and initial value in a time-fractional diffusion equation with derivative order α∈(0,1). By additional boundary measurements and a priori assumption on the diffusion coefficient, the uniqueness of the eigenvalues and an associated integral equation for the diffusion coefficient are firstly established. The proof is based on the Laplace transform and the expansion of eigenfunctions for the solution to the initial value/boundary value problem. Furthermore, by using these two results, the simultaneous uniqueness in determining the diffusion coefficient and initial value is demonstrated from the Liouville transform and Gelfand-Levitan theory. The result shows that the uniqueness in simultaneous identification can be achieved, provided the initial values non-orthogonality to the eigenfunction of differential operators, which incorporates only one diffusion coefficient rather than scenarios involving two diffusion coefficients.

Abstract:We study the uncoupled space-time fractional operators involving time-dependent coefficients and formulate the corresponding inverse problems. Our goal is to determine the variable coefficients from the exterior partial measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We exploit the integration by parts formula for Riemann-Liouville and Caputo derivatives to derive the Runge approximation property for our space-time fractional operator based on the unique continuation property of the fractional Laplacian. This enables us to extend early unique determination results for space-fractional but time-local operators to the space-time fractional case.

Abstract:This study addresses the inverse source problem for the fractional diffusion-wave equation, characterized by a source comprising spatial and temporal components. The investigation is primarily concerned with practical scenarios where data is collected subsequent to an incident. We establish the uniqueness of either the spatial or the temporal component of the source, provided that the temporal component exhibits an asymptotic expansion at infinity. Taking anomalous diffusion as a typical example, we gather the asymptotic behavior of one of the following quantities: the concentration on partial interior region or at a point inside the region, or the flux on partial boundary or at a point on the boundary. The proof is based on the asymptotic expansion of the solution to the fractional diffusion-wave equation. Notably, our approach does not rely on the conventional vanishing conditions for the source components. We also observe that the extent of uniqueness is dependent on the fractional order.

Abstract:In the Hilbert space $H$, the inverse problem of determining the right-hand side of the abstract subdiffusion equation with the fractional Caputo derivative is considered. For the forward problem, a non-local in time condition $u(0)=u(T)$ is taken. The right-hand side of the equation has the form $fg(t)$, and the unknown element is $f\in H$. If function $g(t)$ does not change sign, then under a over-determination condition $ u (t_0)= \psi $, $t_0\in (0, T)$, it is proved that the solution of the inverse problem exists and is unique. An example is given showing the violation of the uniqueness of the solution for some sign-changing functions $g(t)$. For such functions $g(t)$, under certain conditions on this function, one can achieve well-posedness of the problem by choosing $t_0$. And for some $g(t)$, for the existence of a solution to the inverse problem, certain orthogonality conditions must be satisfied and in this case there is no uniqueness. All the results obtained are also new for the classical diffusion equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate direct and inverse problems for the time-fractional heat equation with a time-dependent leading coefficient for positive operators. First, we consider the direct problem, and the unique existence of the generalized solution is established. We also deduce some regularity results. Here, our proofs are based on the eigenfunction expansion method. Second, we study the inverse problem of determining the leading coefficient, and the well-posedness of this inverse problem is proved.

Abstract:In the present paper we consider an inverse source problem for time-fractional mixed parabolic-hyperbolic equation with the Caputo derivative. In case, when hyperbolic part of the considered mixed type equation is wave equation, the uniqueness of source and solution are strongly influenced by initial time and generally is ill-posed. However, when the hyperbolic part is time fractional, the problem is well posed if end time is large. Our method relies on the orthonormal system of eigenfunctions of the operator with respect to space variable. We proved the uniqueness and stability of certain weak solutions for considered problems.

Abstract:This paper deals with an inverse problem of simultaneously identifying the space-dependent diffusion coefficient and the fractional order in the 1D time-fractional diffusion equation with smooth initial functions by using boundary measurements. The uniqueness results for the inverse problem are proved on the basis of the inverse eigenvalue problem, and the Lipschitz continuity of the solution operator is established. A modified optimal perturbation algorithm with a regularization parameter chosen by a sigmoid-type function is put forward for the discretization of the minimization problem. Numerical inversions are performed for the diffusion coefficient taking on different functional forms and the additional data having random noise. Several factors which have important influences on the realization of the algorithm are discussed, including the approximate space of the diffusion coefficient, the regularization parameter and the initial iteration. The inversion solutions are good approximations to the exact solutions with stability and adaptivity demonstrating that the optimal perturbation algorithm with the sigmoid-type regularization parameter is efficient for the simultaneous inversion.

Abstract:In this work, we consider a FDE (fractional diffusion equation) $${}^C D_t^\alpha u(x,t)-a(t)\mathcal{L} u(x,t)=F(x,t)$$ with a time-dependent diffusion coefficient $a(t)$. For the direct problem, given an $a(t),$ we establish the existence, uniqueness and some regularity properties with a more general domain $\Omega$ and right-hand side $F(x,t)$. For the inverse problem--recovering $a(t),$ we introduce an operator $K$ one of whose fixed points is $a(t)$ and show its monotonicity, uniqueness and existence of its fixed points. With these properties, a reconstruction algorithm for $a(t)$ is created and some numerical results are provided to illustrate the theories.
