Abstract:For an old problem of Euler's elastica we prove the novel global property that every planar elastica with non-constant monotone curvature is uniquely minimal subject to the clamped boundary condition. We also partly extend this unique minimality to the length-penalised case; this result is new even in view of local minimality. As an application we prove uniqueness of global minimisers in the straightening problem for generic boundary angles.

Abstract:We prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of embedded self-shrinkers in $\RR^3$. Since self-shrinkers model singularities in mean curvature flow, this theorem can be thought of as a compactness result for the space of all singularities and it plays an important role in studying generic mean curvature flow.

Abstract:For a wide class of curvature energy functionals defined for planar curves under the fixed-length constraint, we obtain optimal necessary conditions for global and local minimizers. Our results extend Maddocks' and Sachkov's rigidity principles for Euler's elastica by a new, unified and geometric approach. This in particular leads to complete classification of stable closed $p$-elasticae for all $p\in(1,\infty)$ and of stable pinned $p$-elasticae for $p\in(1,2]$. Our proof is based on a simple but robust `cut-and-paste' trick without computing the energy nor its second variation, which works well for planar periodic curves but also extends to some non-periodic or non-planar cases. An analytically remarkable point is that our method is directly valid for the highly singular regime $p\in(1,\frac{3}{2}]$ in which the second variation may not exist even for smooth variations.

Abstract:Euler's elastica is defined by a critical point of the total squared curvature under the fixed length constraint, and its $L^p$-counterpart is called $p$-elastica. In this paper we completely classify all $p$-elasticae in the plane and obtain their explicit formulae as well as optimal regularity. To this end we introduce new types of $p$-elliptic functions which streamline the whole argument and result. As an application we also classify all closed planar $p$-elasticae.

Abstract:Motivated by experiments and formal asymptotic expansions in the physics literature, Maor and Shachar (J. Elasticity 134 (2019), 149-173) studied the behaviour of a model elastic energy of maps between manifolds with incompatible metrics. For thin objects they analysed the scaling of the minimal elastic energy as a function of the thickness. In particular they showed that for maps from a ball of radius h in an oriented Riemannian manifold to Euclidean space, the infimum of a model elastic energy per unit volume scales like the fourth power of h and after rescaling one gets convergence to a quadratic expression in the curvature tensor R(p), where p denotes the centre of the ball. In this paper we show the same result for general compact oriented Riemannian targets with R(p) replaced by a suitable difference of the curvature tensors in the target and the domain, thus answering Open Question 1 in the paper by Maor and Shachar. The result extends noncompact targets provided they satisfy a uniform regularity condition. A key idea in the proof is to use Lipschitz approximations to define a suitable notion of convergence.

Abstract:Building on our previous work, we classify all planar $p$-elasticae under the pinned boundary condition, and then obtain uniqueness and geometric properties of global minimizers. As an application we establish a Li--Yau type inequality for the $p$-bending energy, and in particular discover a unique exponent $p \simeq 1.5728$ for full optimality. We also prove existence of minimal $p$-elastic networks, extending a recent result of Dall'Acqua--Novaga--Pluda.

Abstract:In this paper we consider an obstacle problem for a generalization of the p -elastic energy among graphical curves with fixed ends. Taking into account that the Euler–Lagrange equation has a degeneracy, we address the question whether solutions have a flat part, i.e. an open interval where the curvature vanishes. We also investigate which is the main cause of the loss of regularity, the obstacle or the degeneracy. Moreover, we give several conditions on the obstacle that assure existence and nonexistence of solutions. The analysis can be refined in the special case of the p -elastica functional, where we obtain sharp existence results and uniqueness for symmetric minimizers.

Abstract:We investigate the equilibrium configurations of closed planar elastic curves of fixed length, whose stiffness, also known as the bending rigidity, depends on an additional density variable. The underlying variational model relies on the minimization of a bending energy with respect to shape and density and can be considered as a one-dimensional analogue of the Canham-Helfrich model for heterogeneous biological membranes. We present a generalized Euler-Bernoulli elastica functional featuring a density-dependent stiffness coefficient. In order to treat the inherent nonconvexity of the problem we introduce an additional length scale in the model by means of a density gradient term. We derive the system of Euler-Lagrange equations and study the bifurcation structure of solutions with respect to the model parameters. Both analytical and numerical results are presented.

Linearization in incompatible elasticity for general ambient spaces

Abstract:Motivated by recent interest in elastic problems in which the target space is non-Euclidean, we study a limit where local rest distances within an elastic body are incompatible, yet close to, distances within the ambient space. Specifically, we obtain, via $\Gamma$-convergence, a limit elastic model for a sequence of elastic bodies $(M,g_\varepsilon)$ in an ambient space $(S,s)$, for Riemannian metrics $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$ such that $g_\varepsilon \to s$. Furthermore, we relate the minimum of the limit problem to a linearized curvature discrepancy between $g_\varepsilon$ and $s$, using recent results of Kupferman and Leder. This relation confirms a linearized version of a long-standing conjecture in elasticity regarding the relation between the elastic energy and the curvature of the underlying space. The main technical challenge, compared to other linearization results in elasticity, is obtaining the correct notion of displacement for manifold-valued configurations, using Sobolev truncations and parallel transport. We show that the associated compactness result is obtained if $(S,s)$ satisfies a quantitative rigidity property, analogous to the Friesecke--James--Müller rigidity estimate in Euclidean space, and show that this property holds when $(S,s)$ is a round sphere.

Variational stabilization of degenerate p-elasticae

Abstract:A new stabilization phenomenon induced by degenerate diffusion is discovered in the context of pinned planar $p$-elasticae. It was known that in the non-degenerate regime $p\in(1,2]$, including the classical case of Euler's elastica, there are no local minimizers other than unique global minimizers. Here we prove that, in stark contrast, in the degenerate regime $p\in(2,\infty)$ there emerge uncountably many local minimizers with diverging energy.

Abstract:We study the geometric and combinatorial effect of smoothing an intersection point in a collection of arcs or curves on a surface. We prove that all taut arcs with fixed endpoints and all taut 1-manifolds with at least two non-disjoint components on an orientable surface with negative Euler characteristic admit a taut smoothing, and also that all taut arcs with free endpoints admit a smoothing that is either taut or becomes taut after removing at most one intersection. We deduce that for every Riemannian metric on a surface, the shortest properly immersed arcs with at least $k$ self-intersections have exactly $k$ self-intersections when the endpoints of the arc are fixed, and at most $k+1$ self-intersections otherwise, and that the arc length spectrum is "coarsely ordered" by self-intersection number. Along the way, we obtain partial analogous results in the case of curves.

Abstract:We discuss a discretization by polygonal lines of the Euler-Bernoulli bending energy and of Euler elasticae under clamped boundary conditions. We show Hausdorff convergence of the set of almost minimizers of the discrete bending energy to the set of smooth Euler elasticae under mesh refinement in (i) the $W^{1,\infty}$-topology for piecewise-linear interpolation and in (ii) the $W^{2,p}$-topology, $p \in{[2,\infty[}$, using a suitable smoothing operator to create $W^{2,p}$-curves from polygons.

Abstract:For immersed curves in Euclidean space of any codimension we establish a Li--Yau type inequality that gives a lower bound of the (normalized) bending energy in terms of multiplicity. The obtained inequality is optimal for any codimension and any multiplicity except for the case of planar closed curves with odd multiplicity; in this remaining case we discover a hidden algebraic obstruction and indeed prove an exhaustive non-optimality result. The proof is mainly variational and involves Langer--Singer's classification of elasticae and André's algebraic-independence theorem for certain hypergeometric functions. We also discuss applications to elastic flows, networks, and knots.

Abstract:We perform a variational analysis of an elastic membrane spanning a closed curve which may sustain bending and torsion. First, we deal with parametrized curves and linear elastic membranes proving the existence of equilibria and finding first-order necessary conditions for minimizers computing the first variation. Second, we study a more general case, both for the boundary curve and for the membrane, using the framed curve approach. The infinite dimensional version of the Lagrange multipliers' method is applied to get the first-order necessary conditions. Finally, a numerical approach is presented and employed in several numerical test cases.

Abstract:We prove a compactness theorem for sequences of low-action punctured holomorphic curves of controlled topology, in any dimension, without imposing the typical assumption of uniformly bounded Hofer energy. In the limit, we extract a family of closed Reeb-invariant subsets. Then, we prove new structural results for the U-map in ECH and PFH, implying that such sequences exist in abundance in low-dimensional symplectic dynamics. We obtain applications to symplectic dynamics and the geometry of surfaces. First, we prove generalizations to higher genus surfaces and three-manifolds of the celebrated Le Calvez-Yoccoz theorem. Second, we show that for any closed Riemannian or Finsler surface a dense set of points have geodesics passing through them that visit different sections of the surface. Third, we prove a version of Ginzburg-Gürel's "crossing energy bound" for punctured holomorphic curves, of arbitrary topology, in symplectizations of any dimension.

Compactness and rigidity of self-shrinking surfaces

Abstract:The entropy functional introduced by Colding and Minicozzi plays a fundamental role in the analysis of mean curvature flow. However, unlike the hypersurface case, relatively little about the entropy is known in the higher-codimension case. In this note, we use measure-theoretical techniques and rigidity results for self-shrinkers to prove a compactness theorem for a family of self-shrinking surfaces with low entropy. Based on this, we prove the existence of entropy minimizers among self-shrinking surfaces and improve some rigidity results.

Abstract:It is shown that in core-radius cutoff regularized simplified elasticity (where the elastic energy depends quadratically on the full displacement gradient rather than its symmetrized version), the force on a dislocation curve by the negative gradient of the elastic energy asymptotically approaches the mean curvature of the curve as the cutoff radius converges to zero. Rigorous error bounds in Hölder spaces are provided. As an application, convergence of dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the elastic energy to dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the arclength functional, when the motion law is given by an $H^1$-type dissipation, and convergence to curve shortening flow in co-dimension $2$ for the usual $L^2$-dissipation is established. In the second scenario, existence and regularity are assumed while the $H^1$-gradient flow is treated in full generality (for short time). The methods developed here are a blueprint for the more physical setting of linearized isotropic elasticity.
