Abstract:The energy density functional (EDF) method is very widely used in nuclear physics, and among the various existing functionals those based on the relativistic Hartree (RH) approximation are very popular because the exchange contributions (Fock terms) are numerically rather onerous to calculate. Although it is possible to somehow 'mock up' the effects of meson-induced exchange terms by adjusting the meson-nucleon couplings, the lack of Coulomb exchange contributions hampers the accuracy of predictions. In this note, we show that the Coulomb exchange effects can be easily included with a good accuracy in a perturbative approach. Therefore, it would be desirable for future relativistic EDF models to incorporate Coulomb exchange effects, at least to some order of perturbation.
What is the exchange-repulsion energy? Insight by partitioning into physically meaningful contributions

Abstract:Exchange repulsion, the dominant repulsive contribution to intermolecular interaction energies, is caused by the Pauli principle, which enforces that electrons with the same spin must not be located at the same place. Starting from the Heitler-London expression of the exchange-repulsion energy, Exr, we investigate how it can be partitioned into physically relevant and comprehensible contributions. We demonstrate that a division of Exr into a positive kinetic and a negative potential part is possible. However, these contributions correlate only poorly with the actual exchange-repulsion energy. A meaningful partitioning of Exr is derived, where the kinetic energy contribution belongs to a term that vanishes for exact Hartree-Fock wave functions. The remaining pure potential energy terms are distinguished into an exchange integral contribution, Exi, as well as contributions to the repulsion-energy with two, three and four orbital indices (Exr2, Exr3, and Exr4). Qualitative explanations of these terms and their physical origin are proposed. The forms, relationships and absolute sizes of the four parts of Exr suggest an intuitive partitioning of the exchange-repulsion energy into orbital-pair contributions. Insight into the analytic form and quantitative size of the contributions to Exr is provided by considering the 3Sigma+u (1sigma g 1sigma u) state of the H2 molecule, the water dimer, as well as an argon atom interacting with Cl2 and N2. It is demonstrated that Exr is best described as a contribution due to the potential energy and that its leading contribution, Exr2, provides an intuitive qualitative and quantitative approach towards the exchange-repulsion energy.

Abstract:The inclusion of nucleonic exchange energy has been a long-standing challenge for the relativistic density functional theory (RDFT) in nuclear physics. We propose an orbital-dependent relativistic Kohn-Sham density functional theory to incorporate the exchange energy with local Lorentz scalar and vector potentials. The relativistic optimized effective potential equations for the local exchange potentials are derived and solved efficiently. The obtained binding energies and charge radii for nuclei are benchmarked with the results given by the traditional relativistic Hartree-Fock approach, which involves complicated nonlocal potentials. It demonstrates that the present framework is not only accurate but also efficient.

Gedanken Densities and Exact Constraints in Density Functional Theory

Abstract:Approximations to the exact density functional for the exchange-correlation energy of a many-electron ground state can be constructed by satisfying constraints that are universal, i.e., valid for all electron densities. Gedanken densities are designed for the purpose of this construction, but need not be realistic. The uniform electron gas is an old gedanken density. Here, we propose a spherical two-electron gedanken density in which the dimensionless density gradient can be an arbitrary positive constant wherever the density is non-zero. The Lieb-Oxford lower bound on the exchange energy can be satisfied within a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) by bounding its enhancement factor or simplest GGA exchange-energy density. This enhancement-factor bound is well known to be sufficient, but our gedanken density shows that it is also necessary. The conventional exact exchange-energy density satisfies no such local bound, but energy densities are not unique, and the simplest GGA exchange-energy density is not an approximation to it. We further derive a strongly and optimally tightened bound on the exchange enhancement factor of a two-electron density, which is satisfied by the local density approximation but is violated by all published GGA's or meta-GGA's. Finally, some consequences of the non-uniform density-scaling behavior for the asymptotics of the exchange enhancement factor of a GGA or meta-GGA are given.

Abstract:We propose exchanging the energy functionals in ground-state density-functional theory with physically equivalent exact force expressions as a new promising route toward approximations to the exchange–correlation potential and energy. In analogy to the usual energy-based procedure, we split the force difference between the interacting and auxiliary Kohn–Sham system into a Hartree, an exchange, and a correlation force. The corresponding scalar potential is obtained by solving a Poisson equation, while an additional transverse part of the force yields a vector potential. These vector potentials obey an exact constraint between the exchange and correlation contribution and can further be related to the atomic shell structure. Numerically, the force-based local-exchange potential and the corresponding exchange energy compare well with the numerically more involved optimized effective potential method. Overall, the force-based method has several benefits when compared to the usual energy-based approach and opens a route toward numerically inexpensive nonlocal and (in the time-dependent case) nonadiabatic approximations.

Abstract:We consider the renormalized relativistic Nelson model in two spatial dimensions for a finite number of spinless, relativistic quantum mechanical matter particles in interaction with a massive scalar quantized radiation field. We find a Feynman-Kac formula for the corresponding semigroup and discuss some implications such as ergodicity and weighted $L^p$ to $L^q$ bounds, for external potentials that are Kato decomposable in the suitable relativistic sense. Furthermore, our analysis entails upper and lower bounds on the minimal energy for all values of the involved physical parameters when the Pauli principle for the matter particles is ignored. In the translation invariant case (no external potential) these bounds permit to compute the leading asymptotics of the minimal energy in the three regimes where the number of matter particles goes to infinity, the coupling constant for the matter-radiation interaction goes to infinity and the boson mass goes to zero.

Abstract:We construct the complementary short-range correlation relativistic local-density-approximation functional to be used in relativistic range-separated density-functional theory based on a Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian in the no-pair approximation. For this, we perform relativistic random-phase-approximation calculations of the correlation energy of the relativistic homogeneous electron gas with a modified electron-electron interaction, we study the high-density behavior, and fit the results to a parametrized expression. The obtained functional should eventually be useful for electronic-structure calculations of strongly correlated systems containing heavy elements.

Abstract:We propose a method to determine the magnetic exchange interaction and on-site anisotropy tensors of extended Heisenberg spin models from density functional theory including relativistic effects. The method is based on the Liechtenstein-Katsnelson-Antropov-Gubanov torque formalism, whereby energy variations upon infinitesimal rotations are performed. We assume that the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian is expanded in a non-orthogonal basis set of pseudo-atomic orbitals. We define local operators that are both hermitian and satisfy relevant sum rules. We demonstrate that in the presence of spin-orbit coupling a correct mapping from the density functional total energy to a spin model that relies on the rotation of the exchange field part of the Hamiltonian can not be accounted for by transforming the full Hamiltonian. We derive a set of sum rules that pose stringent validity tests on any specific calculation. We showcase the flexibility and accuracy of the method by computing the exchange and anisotropy tensors of both well-studied magnetic nanostructures and of recently synthesized two-dimensional magnets. Specifically, we benchmark our approach against the established Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function method and show that they agree well. Finally, we demonstrate how the application of biaxial strain on the two-dimensional magnet T-CrTe2 can trigger a magnetic phase transition.

Abstract:We establish bounds on the energy of a system of N identical bosons bound by attractive pair potentials and obeying the semirelativistic Salpeter equation. The lower bound is provided by a `reduction', with the aid of Jacobi relative coordinates, to a suitably scaled one-body Klein-Gordon problem. Complementary upper energy bounds are provided by means of a Gaussian trial function. Detailed results are presented for the exponential pair potential V(r) = -v\exp(-r/a).

Exact-exchange relativistic density functional theory in three-dimensional coordinate space

Abstract:The exact-exchange relativistic density functional theory (Ex-RDFT) of atomic nuclei has been solved in three-dimensional lattice space for the first time. The exchange energy is treated within the framework of the orbital-dependent relativistic Kohn-Sham density functional theory, wherein the local Lorentz scalar and vector potentials are derived using the relativistic optimized effective potential method. The solutions of binding energies, charge radii, and density distributions are benchmarked against the traditional relativistic Hartree-Fock approach for spherical and axially deformed nuclei. Furthermore, the triaxial neutron-rich $^{104-120}\text{Ru}$ isotopes are investigated with the exchange correlations, which is beyond the current capacity of the traditional relativistic Hartree-Fock approach. The results notably indicate the $\gamma$-softness of these neutron-rich nuclei, which is consistent with experimental observations. This novel approach establishes a foundation for the study of nuclei without imposing any symmetry restrictions employing relativistic density functional with exchange correlations.

Relativistic corrections to energy spectrum of hydrogen due to the full one-photon-exchange interaction

Abstract:In this work, we estimate the relativistic corrections to the energy spectrum of hydrogen resulting from the full one-photon-exchange interaction using a highly precise numerical method. In the frame of the effective Schrodinger-like equation, which is derived exactly from the Bethe-Salpeter equation in quantum electrodynamics, we express the effective potential corresponding to the full one-photon-exchange interaction in terms of eight scalar functions. Unlike the usual calculations performed in the references, where the effective potential is expanded in terms of momenta order by order, we retain the exact momentum dependence in the effective potential to estimate its corrections to the energy spectrum of hydrogen using a highly precise numerical method. We also use the same numerical method to double-check the results in the non-relativistic case to ensure accuracy. We discuss the comparison of the numerical results with those obtained using the usual bound-state perturbative theory. Our calculations suggest that it is possible to accurately account for all the relativistic contributions using this method. It would be interesting to extent these calculations to positronium, muonic hydrogen, and cases involving nuclear structure and radiative corrections.

The present study concerns the nonlocal-to-local convergence of a family of exchange energy functionals in the limit of very short-range interactions. The analysis accounts for both symmetric and antisymmetric exchange. Our result is twofold. First, we extend the Bourgain–Brezis–Mironescu formula to encompass the scenario where antisymmetric contributions are encoded into the energy. Second, we prove that, under physically relevant assumptions on the families of exchange kernels, the family of nonlocal functionals gamma-converges to their local counterparts. As a by-product of our analysis, we obtain a rigorous justification of Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions in chiral magnets under the form commonly adopted in the variational theory of micromagnetism when modeling antisymmetric exchange interactions.

Abstract:We present a new relativistic bound-state formalism for two interacting Fermi–Dirac particles. The kernel of the integral equation for the bound-state system is generated by summing Feynman scattering amplitudes and multiplying by a bound-state amplitude. The method is illustrated through calculations of the hyperfine and fine splittings of positronium up to order α5. Our calculations of the one-loop contributions are carried out in the explicitly covariant Feynman gauge. We also present new results for the hyperfine and fine splittings in positronium to order α5 for arbitrary principal quantum number n, which are easily obtained owing to the virtue of conceptual and calculational simplicity of our formalism. In addition, we present the one-loop renormalization scheme in our formalism.
Physical Origin of the One-Quarter Exact Exchange in Density Functional Theory

Abstract:Exchange interactions are a manifestation of the quantum mechanical nature of the electrons and play a key role in predicting the properties of materials from first principles. In density functional theory (DFT), a widely used approximation to the exchange energy combines fractions of density-based and Hartree-Fock (exact) exchange. This so-called hybrid DFT scheme is accurate in many materials, for reasons that are not fully understood. Here we show that a 1/4 fraction of exact exchange plus a 3/4 fraction of density-based exchange is compatible with a correct quantum mechanical treatment of the exchange energy of an electron pair in the unpolarized electron gas. We also show that the 1/4 exact-exchange fraction mimics a correlation interaction between doubly-excited electronic configurations. The relation between our results and trends observed in hybrid DFT calculations is discussed, along with other implications.

Abstract:A practical electronic structure method in which a two-body functional is the fundamental variable is constructed. The basic formalism of our method is equivalent to Hartree-Fock density matrix functional theory [M. Levy in {\it Density Matrices and Density Functionals}, Ed. R. Erdahl and V. H. Smith Jr., D. Reidel, (1987)]. The implementation of the method consists of solving Hartree-Fock equations and using the resulting orbitals to calculate two-body corrections to account for correlation. The correction terms are constructed so that the energy of the system in the absence of external potentials can be made to correspond to approximate expressions for the energy of the homogeneous electron gas. In this work the approximate expressions we use are based on the high-density limit of the homogeneous electron gas. Self-interaction is excluded from the two-body functional itself. It is shown that our pair density based functional does not suffer from the divergence present in many density functionals when homogeneous scaling is applied. Calculations based on our pair density functional lead to quantitative results for the correlation energies of atomic test cases.

The exchange fluctuation theorem in quantum mechanics

Abstract:We study the heat transfer between two finite quantum systems initially at different temperatures. We find that a recently proposed fluctuation theorem for heat exchange, namely the exchange fluctuation theorem [C. Jarzynski and D. K. Wojcik, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 230602 (2004)], does not generally hold in the presence of a finite heat transfer as in the original form proved for weak coupling. As the coupling is weakened, the deviation from the theorem and the heat transfer vanish in the same order of the coupling. We then discover a condition for the exchange fluctuation theorem to hold in the presence of a finite heat transfer, namely the commutable-coupling condition. We explicitly calculate the deviation from the exchange fluctuation theorem as well as the heat transfer for simple models. We confirm for the models that the deviation indeed has a finite value as far as the coupling between the two systems is finite except for the special point of the commutable-coupling condition. We also confirm analytically that the commutable-coupling condition indeed lets the exchange fluctuation theorem hold exactly under a finite heat transfer.

Abstract:On the way of a microscopic derivation of covariant density functionals, the first complete solution of the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) equations is presented for symmetric nuclear matter. In most of the earlier investigations, theG-matrix is calculated only in the space of positive energy solutions. On the other side, for the solution of the relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) equations, also the elements of this matrix connecting positive and negative energy solutions are required. So far, in the literature, these matrix elements are derived in various approximations. We discuss solutions of the Thompson equation for the full Dirac space and compare the resulting equation of state with those of earlier attempts in this direction.

Abstract:We extend our previous formulation of time-dependent four-component relativistic density-functional theory [J. Gao, W. Liu, B. Song, and C. Liu, J. Chem. Phys. 121, 6658 (2004)] by using a noncollinear form for the exchange-correlation kernel. The new formalism can deal with excited states involving moment (spin)-flipped configurations which are otherwise not accessible with ordinary exchange-correlation functionals. As a first application, the global potential-energy curves of 16 low-lying omega omega-coupled electronic states of the AuH molecule have been investigated. The derived spectroscopic parameters, including the adiabatic and vertical excitation energies, equilibrium bond lengths, harmonic and anharmonic vibrational constants, fundamental frequencies, and dissociation energies, are grossly in good agreement with those of ab initio multireference second-order perturbation theory and the available experimental data.
