Abstract:We revisit Koiso's original examples of rigid infinitesimally deformable Einstein metrics. We show how to compute Koiso's obstruction to the integrability of the infinitesimal deformations on $\mathbb{CP}^{n}\times \mathbb{CP}^{1}$ using completely elementary complex differential geometry.

Abstract:Let Mn(n ≥ 4) be an oriented compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature in an (n + p)-dimensional complete simply connected Riemannian manifold Nn+p. Then there exists a constant δ(n, p) 2 (0, 1) such that if the sectional curvature of N satisfies $${\overline K _N} \in \;\,\left[ {\delta \left( {n,p} \right),\;1} \right]$$, and if M has a lower bound for Ricci curvature and an upper bound for scalar curvature, then N is isometric to Sn+p. On the rigidity of the complex Grassmannians

Abstract:We study the integrability to second order of the infinitesimal Einstein deformations of the symmetric metric $g$ on the complex Grassmannian of $k$-planes inside $\mathbb{C}^n$. By showing the nonvanishing of Koiso's obstruction polynomial, we characterize the infinitesimal deformations that are integrable to second order as an explicit variety inside $\mathfrak{su}(n)$. In particular we show that $g$ is isolated in the moduli space of Einstein metrics if $n$ is odd.

Abstract:Following the ideas of Gasqui and Goldschmidt, we give an explicit description of the infinitesimal Einstein deformations admitted by the Fubini--Study metric on complex Grassmannians $G_{m}(\mathbb{C}^{n+m})$ with $m,n\geq 2$. The deformations were first shown to exist by Koiso in the 1980s but it has remained an open question as to whether they can be integrated to give genuine deformations of the Fubini--Study metric. We show that when $n+m$ is odd, the answer is no.

Abstract:We study the integrability to second order of infinitesimal Einstein deformations on compact Riemannian and in particular on Kähler manifolds. We find a new way of expressing the necessary and sufficient condition for integrability to second order, which also gives a very clear and compact way of writing the Koiso obstruction. As an application we consider the Kähler case, where the condition can be further simplified and in complex dimension $3$ turns out to be purely algebraic. One of our main results is the complete and explicit description of infinitesimal Einstein deformation integrable to second order on the complex $2$-plane Grassmannian, which also has a quaternion Kähler structure. As a striking consequence we find that the symmetric Einstein metric on the Grassmannian $ \mathrm{Gr}_2(\bbC^{n+2})$ for $n$ odd is rigid.

On the rigidity of Ricci shrinkers

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the rigidity of the generalized cylinder $N^n \times \mathbb R^{m-n}$, or a quotient thereof, in the space of Ricci shrinkers equipped with the pointed-Gromov-Hausdorff topology. Here, $N$ is a stable Einstein manifold that has an obstruction of order $3$. The proof is based on a quantitative characterization of the rigidity of compact Ricci shrinkers, a rigidity inequality of mixed orders on generalized cylinders, and the method of contraction and extension. As an application, we prove the uniqueness of the tangent flow for general compact Ricci flows under the assumption that one tangent flow is a generalized cylinder.

Rigidity of quasi-Einstein metrics: The incompressible case

Abstract:As part of a programme to classify quasi-Einstein metrics $(M,g,X)$ on closed manifolds and near-horizon geometries of extreme black holes, we study such spaces when the vector field $X$ is divergence-free but not identically zero. This condition is satisfied by left-invariant quasi-Einstein metrics on compact homogeneous spaces (including the near-horizon geometry of an extreme Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta in two distinct planes), and on certain bundles over Kähler-Einstein manifolds. We find that these spaces exhibit a mild form of rigidity: they always admit a one-parameter group of isometries generated by $X$. Further geometrical and topological restrictions are also obtained.

Abstract:To a hyperbolic manifold one can associate a canonical projective structure and ask whether it can be deformed or not. In a cusped manifold, one can ask about the existence of deformations that are trivial on the boundary. We prove that if the canonical projective structure of a cusped manifold is infinitesimally projectively rigid relative to the boundary, then infinitely many Dehn fillings are projectively rigid. We analyze in more detail the figure eight knot and the Withehead link exteriors, for which we can give explicit infinite families of slopes with projectively rigid Dehn fillings.

Abstract:We present a discussion about the local isometric rigidity problem in codimension 2 with a concrete example. We show the necessity of extending the notions of genuine and honest rigidity in order to have the transitivity property. In order to do so, we show the necessity of studying the isometric immersions in semi-Euclidean spaces. We show that this extension comes with a natural type of singularity in the inner product.

Abstract:In this note we prove three rigidity results for Einstein manifolds with bounded covering geometry. (1) An almost flat manifold $(M,g)$ must be flat if it is Einstein, i.e. $\operatorname{Ric}_g=\lambda g$ for some real number $\lambda$. (2) A compact Einstein manifolds with a non-vanishing and almost maximal volume entropy is hyperbolic. (3) A compact Einstein manifold admitting a uniform local rewinding almost maximal volume is isometric to a space form.

Abstract:We describe two simple obstructions to the existence of Ricci-flat Kähler cone metrics on isolated Gorenstein singularities or, equivalently, to the existence of Sasaki-Einstein metrics on the links of these singularities. In particular, this also leads to new obstructions for Kähler–Einstein metrics on Fano orbifolds. We present several families of hypersurface singularities that are obstructed, including 3-fold and 4-fold singularities of ADE type that have been studied previously in the physics literature. We show that the AdS/CFT dual of one obstruction is that the R–charge of a gauge invariant chiral primary operator violates the unitarity bound.
New Rigidity Results for Critical Metrics of Some Quadratic Curvature Functionals

Abstract:We prove a new rigidity result for metrics defined on closed smooth $ n $-manifolds that are critical for the quadratic functional $ \mathfrak{F}_{t} $, which depends on the Ricci curvature $ Ric $ and the scalar curvature $ R $, and that satisfy a pinching condition of the form $ Sec > \epsilon R $, where $ \epsilon $ is a function of $ t $ and $ n $, while $ Sec $ denotes the sectional curvature. In particular, we show that Bach-flat metrics with constant scalar curvature satisfying $ Sec > \frac{1}{48} R $ are Einstein and, by a known result, are isometric to $ \mathbb{S}^{4} $, $ \mathbb{RP}^{4} $ or $ \mathbb{CP}^{2} $.

Abstract:The intent of this short note is to provide context for and an independent proof of the discovery of Klaus Kroencke that complex projective space with its canonical Fubini--Study metric is dynamically unstable under Ricci flow in all complex dimensions N>1. The unstable perturbation is not Kaehler. This provides a counterexample to a well known conjecture widely attributed to Hamilton. Moreover, it shows that the expected stability of the subspace of Kaehler metrics under Ricci flow, another conjecture believed by several experts, needs to be interpreted in a more nuanced way than some may have expected.

Abstract:For compact submanifolds in Euclidean and Spherical space forms with Ricci curvature bounded below by a function $\alpha(n,k,H,c)$ of mean curvature, we prove that the submanifold is either isometric to the Einstein Clifford torus, or a topological sphere for the maximal bound $\alpha(n,[\frac{n}{2}],H,c)$, or has up to $k$-th homology groups vanishing. This gives an almost complete (except for the differentiable sphere theorem) characterization of compact submanifolds with pinched Ricci curvature, generalizing celebrated rigidity results obtained by Ejiri, Xu-Tian, Xu-Gu, Xu-Leng-Gu, Vlachos, Dajczer-Vlachos.

Abstract:We present several deformation and rigidity results within the classes of closed Riemannian manifolds which either are $2k$-Einstein (in the sense that their $2k$-Ricci tensor is constant) or have constant $2k$-Gauss-Bonnet curvature. The results hold for a family of manifolds containing all non-flat space forms and the main ingredients in the proofs are explicit formulae for the linearizations of the above invariants obtained by means of the formalism of double forms.

Abstract:Let (Xn,g+) (n≥3) be a Poincaré–Einstein manifold which is C3,α conformally compact with conformal infinity (∂X,[gˆ]). On the conformal compactification (X‾,g¯=ρ2g+) via a boundary defining function ρ, there are two types of Yamabe constants: Y(X‾,∂X,[g¯]) and Q(X‾,∂X,[g¯]). (See definitions (1) and (2).) In [13], Gursky and Han obtained an inequality between Y(X‾,∂X,[g¯]) and Y(∂X,[gˆ]). In this paper, we first show that the equality holds in Gursky–Han's inequality if and only if (Xn,g+) is isometric to the standard hyperbolic space (Hn,gH). Secondly, we derive a conformal invariant inequality between Q(X‾,∂X,[g¯]) and Y(∂X,[gˆ]), and show the equality holds if and only if (Xn,g+) is isometric to (Hn,gH). Based on this, we give a simple proof of the rigidity theorem for Poincaré–Einstein manifolds with conformal infinity being conformally equivalent to the standard sphere.

Abstract:We study invariants defined by count of charged, elliptic $J$-holomorphic curves in locally conformally symplectic manifolds. We use this to define $\mathbb{Q} $-valued deformation invariants of certain complete Riemann-Finlser manifolds and their isometries and this is used to find some new phenomena in Riemann-Finlser geometry. In contact geometry this Gromov-Witten theory is used to study fixed Reeb strings of strict contactomorphisms. Along the way, we state an analogue of the Weinstein conjecture in lcs geometry, directly extending the Weinstein conjecture, and discuss various partial verifications. A counterexample for a stronger, also natural form of this conjecture is given.

Abstract:We study the question of the integrability of Einstein deformations and relate it to the question of the desingularization of Einstein metrics. Our main application is a negative answer to the long-standing question of whether or not every Einstein $4$-orbifold (which is an Einstein metric space in a synthetic sense) is limit of smooth Einstein $4$-manifolds. We more precisely show that spherical and hyperbolic $4$-orbifolds with the simplest singularities cannot be Gromov-Hausdorff limits of smooth Einstein $4$-metrics without relying on previous integrability assumptions. For this, we analyze the integrability of deformations of Ricci-flat ALE metrics through variations of Schoen's Pohozaev identity. Inspired by Taub's preserved quantity in General Relativity, we also introduce preserved integral quantities based on the symmetries of Einstein metrics. These quantities are obstructions to the integrability of infinitesimal Einstein deformations "closing up" inside a hypersurface - even with change of topology. We show that many previously identified obstructions to the desingularization of Einstein $4$-metrics are equivalent to these quantities on Ricci-flat cones. In particular, all of the obstructions to desingularizations bubbling out Eguchi-Hanson metrics are recovered. This lets us further interpret the obstructions to the desingularization of Einstein metrics as a defect of integrability.

On the Rigidity of Cosmological Space-times

Abstract:In this paper we analyse a family of geometrically well-behaved cosmological space-times $(V^{n+1},g)$, which are foliated by intrinsically isotropic space-like hypersurfaces $\{M_t\}_{t\in \mathbb{R}}$, which are orthogonal to a family of co-moving observers defined by a global time-like vector field $U$. In particular, this implies such space-times satisfy several of the well-known criteria for isotropic cosmological space-times, although, in the family in question, the simultaneity-spaces $(M_t,g_t)$ associated to $U$ can have as sectional curvature a sign-changing function $k(t)$. Being this clearly impossible in the FLRW family of standard cosmological space-times, it motivates us to revisit the geometric rigidity consequences of different definitions of isotropy available in the literature. In this analysis, we divide such definition according to whether the isometries involved are taken to be (local) space-time (STI space-times) or (local) space isometries (SI space-times) of $(M_t,g_t)$ for each $t$. This subtlety will be shown to be critical, proving that only when space-time isometries are considered one obtains the well-known rigidity properties associated with isotropic cosmological space-times. In particular SI space-times will be shown to be a strictly larger class than the STI ones, allowing a family of basic cosmological curvature change models which are not even locally isometric to any FLRW space-time.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to provide a sound framework for addressing a difficult problem: the automatic construction of an autonomous agent's modular architecture. We combine results from two apparently uncorrelated domains: Autonomous planning through Markov Decision Processes and a General Data Clustering Approach using a kernel-like method. Our fundamental idea is that the former is a good framework for addressing autonomy whereas the latter allows to tackle self-organizing problems.
