Abstract:We prove that the constructive and intuitionistic variants of the modal logic $\mathsf{KB}$ coincide. This result contrasts with a recent result by Das and Marin, who showed that the constructive and intuitionistic variants of $\mathsf{K}$ do not prove the same diamond-free formulas.

Abstract:The intuitionistic modal logics considered between Constructive K (CK) and Intuitionistic K (IK) differ in their treatment of the possibility (diamond) connective. It was recently rediscovered that some logics between CK and IK also disagree on their diamond-free fragments, with only some remaining conservative over the standard axiomatisation of intuitionistic modal logic with necessity (box) alone. We show that relational Kripke semantics for CK can be extended with frame conditions for all axioms in the standard axiomatisation of IK, as well as other axioms previously studied. This allows us to answer open questions about the (non-)conservativity of such logics over intuitionistic modal logic without diamond. Our results are formalised using the Coq Proof Assistant.

Abstract:Non-classical generalizations of classical modal logic have been developed in the contexts of constructive mathematics and natural language semantics. In this paper, we discuss a general approach to the semantics of non-classical modal logics via algebraic representation theorems. We begin with complete lattices $L$ equipped with an antitone operation $\neg$ sending $1$ to $0$, a completely multiplicative operation $\Box$, and a completely additive operation $\Diamond$. Such lattice expansions can be represented by means of a set $X$ together with binary relations $\vartriangleleft$, $R$, and $Q$, satisfying some first-order conditions, used to represent $(L,\neg)$, $\Box$, and $\Diamond$, respectively. Indeed, any lattice $L$ equipped with such a $\neg$, a multiplicative $\Box$, and an additive $\Diamond$ embeds into the lattice of propositions of a frame $(X,\vartriangleleft,R,Q)$. Building on our recent study of "fundamental logic", we focus on the case where $\neg$ is dually self-adjoint ($a\leq \neg b$ implies $b\leq\neg a$) and $\Diamond \neg a\leq\neg\Box a$. In this case, the representations can be constrained so that $R=Q$, i.e., we need only add a single relation to $(X,\vartriangleleft)$ to represent both $\Box$ and $\Diamond$. Using these results, we prove that a system of fundamental modal logic is sound and complete with respect to an elementary class of bi-relational structures $(X,\vartriangleleft, R)$.

The Finite Model Property of Some Non-normal Modal Logics with the Transitivity Axiom

Abstract:In 1997 Timothy J. Surendonk proved via algebraic semantics that all modal logics without iterative axioms are canonical and so strongly complete. In this paper, we continue the work done by Surendonk in this field. We use neighborhood semantics to show that some iterative logics (with the axiom $\Box p\rightarrow\Box\Box p$) are also strongly complete and have the finite model property.

Decidability of Quasi-Dense Modal Logics

Abstract:The decidability of axiomatic extensions of the modal logic K with modal reduction principles, i.e. axioms of the form $\Diamond^{k} p \rightarrow \Diamond^{n} p$, has remained a long-standing open problem. In this paper, we make significant progress toward solving this problem and show that decidability holds for a large subclass of these logics, namely, for 'quasi-dense logics.' Such logics are extensions of K with with modal reduction axioms such that $0 < k < n$ (dubbed 'quasi-density axioms'). To prove decidability, we define novel proof systems for quasi-dense logics consisting of disjunctive existential rules, which are first-order formulae typically used to specify ontologies in the context of database theory. We show that such proof systems can be used to generate proofs and models of modal formulae, and provide an intricate model-theoretic argument showing that such generated models can be encoded as finite objects called 'templates.' By enumerating templates of bound size, we obtain an EXPSPACE decision procedure as a consequence.

Abstract:We discuss the modifications of the Kripke trick simulating binary predicate letters of classical first-order formulas with monadic modal first-order formulas and the situations where the trick does not work. As a result, we obtain results on algorithmic upper bounds for monadic fragments of some modal and superintuitionistic first-order logics.

Abstract:We present constructive provability logic, an intuitionstic modal logic that validates the L\"ob rule of G\"odel and L\"ob's provability logic by permitting logical reflection over provability. Two distinct variants of this logic, CPL and CPL*, are presented in natural deduction and sequent calculus forms which are then shown to be equivalent. In addition, we discuss the use of constructive provability logic to justify stratified negation in logic programming within an intuitionstic and structural proof theory.

Abstract:We investigate intuitionistic modal logics with locally interpreted $\square$ and $\lozenge$. The basic logic LIK is stronger than constructive modal logic WK and incomparable with intuitionistic modal logic IK. We propose an axiomatization of LIK and some of its extensions. We propose bi-nested calculi for LIK and these extensions, thus providing both a decision procedure and a procedure of finite countermodel extraction.

Abstract:The logics $\mathsf{CS4}$ and $\mathsf{IS4}$ are the two leading intuitionistic variants of the modal logic $\mathsf{S4}$. Whether the finite model property holds for each of these logics have been long-standing open problems. It was recently shown that $\mathsf{IS4}$ has the finite frame property and thus the finite model property. In this paper, we prove that $\mathsf{CS4}$ also enjoys the finite frame property.

Abstract:There has been renewed interest in recent years in McKinsey and Tarski's interpretation of modal logic in topological spaces and their proof that S4 is the logic of any separable dense-in-itself metric space. Here we extend this work to the modal mu-calculus and to a logic of tangled closure operators that was developed by Fernández-Duque after these two languages had been shown by Dawar and Otto to have the same expressive power over finite transitive Kripke models. We prove that this equivalence remains true over topological spaces. We establish the finite model property in Kripke semantics for various tangled closure logics with and without the universal modality $\forall$. We also extend the McKinsey--Tarski topological `dissection lemma'. These results are used to construct a representation map (also called a d-p-morphism) from any dense-in-itself metric space $X$ onto any finite connected locally connected serial transitive Kripke frame. This yields completeness theorems over $X$ for a number of languages: (i) the modal mu-calculus with the closure operator $\Diamond$; (ii) $\Diamond$ and the tangled closure operators $\langle t \rangle$; (iii) $\Diamond,\forall$; (iv) $\Diamond,\forall,\langle t \rangle$; (v) the derivative operator $\langle d \rangle$; (vi) $\langle d \rangle$ and the associated tangled closure operators $\langle dt \rangle$; (vii) $\langle d \rangle,\forall$; (viii) $\langle d \rangle,\forall,\langle dt \rangle$. Soundness also holds, if: (a) for languages with $\forall$, $X$ is connected; and (b) for languages with $\langle d \rangle$, $X$ validates the well known axiom $\mathrm{G}_1$. For countable languages without $\forall$, we prove strong completeness. We also show that in the presence of $\forall$, strong completeness fails if $X$ is compact and locally connected.

Axiomatizing modal inclusion logic and its variants

Abstract:We provide a complete axiomatization of modal inclusion logic - team-based modal logic extended with inclusion atoms. We review and refine an expressive completeness and normal form theorem for the logic, define a natural deduction proof system, and use the normal form to prove completeness of the axiomatization. Complete axiomatizations are also provided for two other extensions of modal logic with the same expressive power as modal inclusion logic: one augmented with a might operator and the other with a single-world variant of the might operator.

Abstract:We study the properties of the constructible universe, L, over intuitionistic theories. We give an extended set of fundamental operations which is sufficient to generate the universe over Intuitionistic Kripke-Platek set theory without Infinity. Following this, we investigate when L can fail to be an inner model in the traditional sense. Namely, we show that over Constructive Zermelo-Fraenkel (even with the Power Set axiom) one cannot prove that the Axiom of Exponentiation holds in L.

A Coalgebraic Semantics for Intuitionistic Modal Logic

Abstract:We give a new coalgebraic semantics for intuitionistic modal logic with $\Box$. In particular, we provide a colagebraic representation of intuitionistic descriptive modal frames and of intuitonistic modal Kripke frames based on image-finite posets. This gives a solution to a problem in the area of coalgebaic logic for these classes of frames, raised explicitly by Litak (2014) and de Groot and Pattinson (2020). Our key technical tool is a recent generalization of a construction by Ghilardi, in the form of a right adjoint to the inclusion of the category of Esakia spaces in the category of Priestley spaces. As an application of these results, we study bisimulations of intuitionistic modal frames, describe dual spaces of free modal Heyting algebras, and provide a path towards a theory of coalgebraic intuitionistic logics.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the well-known modal logics $\mathbf{K}$, $\mathbf{T}$, $\mathbf{K4}$, and $\mathbf{S4}$, and we study some of their sub-propositional fragments, namely the classical Horn fragment, the Krom fragment, the so-called core fragment, defined as the intersection of the Horn and the Krom fragments, plus their sub-fragments obtained by limiting the use of boxes and diamonds in clauses. We focus, first, on the relative expressive power of such languages: we introduce a suitable measure of expressive power, and we obtain a complex hierarchy that encompasses all fragments of the considered logics. Then, after observing the low expressive power, in particular, of the Horn fragments without diamonds, we study the computational complexity of their satisfiability problem, proving that, in general, it becomes polynomial.

Topological product of modal logics with the McKinsey axiom

Abstract:In this paper we consider the topological products of modal logics of S4.1 and S4. We prove that it is equal to the fusion of logics S4.1 and S4 plus one additional axiom. We also show that this product is decidable. This is an example of a topological product of logics that is greater than the fusion but less than the expanding product of the corresponding logics.

Abstract:We give a purely syntactical proof of the fixed point theorem for Sacchetti's modal logics ${\bf K} + \Box(\Box^n p \to p) \to \Box p$ ($n \geq 2$) of provability. From our proof, an effective procedure for constructing fixed points in these logics is obtained. We also show the existence of simple fixed points for particular modal formulas.

Modal weak Kleene logics: axiomatizations and relational semantics

Abstract:Weak Kleene logics are three-valued logics characterized by the presence of an infectious truth-value. In their external versions, as they were originally introduced by Bochvar and Hallden, these systems are equipped with an additional connective capable of expressing whether a formula is classically true. In this paper we further expand the expressive power of external weak Kleen logics by modalizing them with a unary operator. The addition of an alethic modality gives rise to the two systems $\B^{\square}$ and $MPWK$, which have two different readings of the modal operator. We provide these logics with a complete and decidable Hilbert-style axiomatization w.r.t. a three-valued possible worlds semantics. The starting point of these calculi are new axiomatizations for the non-modal bases B and PWKe, which we provide using the recent algebraization results about these two logics. In particular, we prove the algebraizability of $\PWKe$. Finally some standard extensions of the basic modal systems are provided with their completeness results w.r.t. special classes of frames.

Abstract:Modal dependence logics are modal logics defined on the basis of team semantics and have the downward closure property. In this paper, we introduce sound and complete deduction systems for the major modal dependence logics, especially those with intuitionistic connectives in their languages. We also establish a concrete connection between team semantics and single-world semantics, and show that modal dependence logics can be interpreted as variants of intuitionistic modal logics.
