Abstract:Let $f: {\Bbb R}^n \longrightarrow {\Bbb R}$ be a positive definite quadratic form and let $y \in {\Bbb R}^n$ be a point. We present a fully polynomial randomized approximation scheme (FPRAS) for computing $\sum_{x \in {\Bbb Z}^n} e^{-f(x)}$, provided the eigenvalues of $f$ lie in the interval roughly between $s$ and $e^{s}$ and for computing $\sum_{x \in {\Bbb Z}^n} e^{-f(x-y)}$, provided the eigenvalues of $f$ lie in the interval roughly between $e^{-s}$ and $s^{-1}$ for some $s \geq 3$. To compute the first sum, we represent it as the integral of an explicit log-concave function on ${\Bbb R}^n$, and to compute the second sum, we use the reciprocity relation for theta functions. We then apply our results to test the existence of many short integer vectors in a given subspace $L \subset {\Bbb R}^n$, to estimate the distance from a given point to a lattice, and to sample a random lattice point from the discrete Gaussian distribution.

Efficient resolution of Thue-Mahler equations

Abstract:A Thue-Mahler equation is a Diophantine equation of the form $$F(X,Y) = a\cdot p_1^{z_1}\cdots p_v^{z_v}, \qquad \gcd(X,Y)=1$$ where $F$ be an irreducible homogeneous binary form of degree at least $3$ with integer coefficients, $a$ is a non-zero integer and $p_1, \dots, p_v$ are rational primes. Existing algorithms for resolving such equations require computations in the number field obtained by adjoining three roots of $F(X,1)=0$. We give a new algorithm that requires computations only in the number field obtained by adjoining one root, making it far more suited for higher degree examples. We also introduce a lattice sieving technique reminiscent of the Mordell--Weil sieve that makes it practical to tackle Thue--Mahler equations of higher degree and with larger sets of primes. We give several examples including one of degree $11$. Let $P(m)$ denote the largest prime divisor of an integer $m \ge 2$. As an application of our algorithm we determine all pairs $(X,Y)$ of coprime non-negative integers such that $P(X^4-2Y^4) \le 100$, finding that there are precisely $49$ such pairs.

Eisenstein integral for theta stable parabolic

Abstract:Let G be a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center, θ a Cartan involution on G. Let q be a parabolic subalgebra of the complexified Lie algebra of G. When q is real, Harish-Chandra has defined his Eisenstein integral for q. His Eisenstein integral is closely related to ordinary parabolic inductions. In this paper, we define an analog of Harish-Chandra’s Eisenstein integral in the other extremal case, namely when q is θ stable. It turns out that our integral is closely related to cohomological induction. As Eisenstein integrals are generalizations of elementary spherical functions for spherical principal series, our integrals are generalizations of Flensted-Jensen’s fundamental functions for discrete series. Combining our integral with Harich-Chandra’s, we may find an integral representation of the matrix coefficient of an arbitrary minimal K types in an arbitrary irreducible (g, K) module.

Abstract:Using Shimura's reciprocity law, we calculate the Galois action on the special values of theta functions associated to primitive Dirichlet characters of odd conductor, normalised by the Dedekind eta function, at the point i. As a consequence, we prove some experimental results of Cohen and Zagier and we deduce a partial result on the non-vanishing of these special theta values with prime conductor.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis, we prove a sharp upper bound on moments of shifted Dirichlet L‐functions. We use this to obtain conditional upper bounds on high moments of theta functions. Both of these results strengthen theorems of Munsch, who proved almost sharp upper bounds for these quantities. The main new ingredient of our proof comes from a paper of Harper, who showed the related result ∫0T|ζ(1/2+it)|2k≪kT(logT)k2 for all k⩾0 under the Riemann Hypothesis. Finally, we obtain a sharp conditional upper bound on high moments of character sums of arbitrary length.

Computational approach to the Schottky problem

Abstract:We present a computational approach to the classical Schottky problem based on Fay's trisecant identity for genus $g\geq 4$. For a given Riemann matrix $\mathbb{B}\in\mathbb{H}^{g}$, the Fay identity establishes linear dependence of secants in the Kummer variety if and only if the Riemann matrix corresponds to a Jacobian variety as shown by Krichever. The theta functions in terms of which these secants are expressed depend on the Abel maps of four arbitrary points on a Riemann surface. However, there is no concept of an Abel map for general $\mathbb{B} \in \mathbb{H}^{g}$. To establish linear dependence of the secants, four components of the vectors entering the theta functions can be chosen freely. The remaining components are determined by a Newton iteration to minimize the residual of the Fay identity. Krichever's theorem assures that if this residual vanishes within the finite numerical precision for a generic choice of input data, then the Riemann matrix is with this numerical precision the period matrix of a Riemann surface. The algorithm is compared in genus 4 for some examples to the Schottky-Igusa modular form, known to give the Jacobi locus in this case. It is shown that the same residuals are achieved by the Schottky-Igusa form and the approach based on the Fay identity in this case. In genera 5, 6 and 7, we discuss known examples of Riemann matrices and perturbations thereof for which the Fay identity is not satisfied.

Slice monogenic theta series

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a generalization of theta series in the context of the slice monogenic function theory in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ where me make use of the so-called $*$-exponential function in a hypercomplex variable. Together with the Eisenstein and Poincaré series that we introduced in a previous paper, the theta series construction in this paper completes the fundament of the basic theory of modular forms in the slice monogenic setting. We introduce a suitable generalized Poisson summation formula in this framework and we apply a properly adapted Fourier transform. As a direct application we prove a transformation formula for slice monogenic theta series. Then we introduce a family of conjugated theta functions. These are used to construct a slice monogenic generalization of the third power of the Dedekind eta function and of the modular discriminant. We also investigate their transformation behavior. Finally, we show that these theta series are special solutions to a generalization of the heat equation associated with the slice derivative. We round off by discussing the monogenic case.

Abstract:We solve an open problem proposed in the book "Computing the continuous discretely" written by Matthias Beck and Sinai Robins. That is, we provide a practical polynomial time algorithm for calculating Fourier-Dedekind sums. The algorithm is simple modular Barvinok's simplicial cone decomposition. It can be easily adapted into De Leora et al.'s LattE package, which gives a nice implementation of Barvinok's polynomial time algorithm.

Abstract:A theta surface in affine 3-space is the zero set of a Riemann theta function in genus 3. This includes surfaces arising from special plane quartics that are singular or reducible. Lie and Poincaré showed that theta surfaces are precisely the surfaces of double translation, i.e. obtained as the Minkowski sum of two space curves in two different ways. These curves are parametrized by abelian integrals, so they are usually not algebraic. This paper offers a new view on this classical topic through the lens of computation. We present practical tools for passing between quartic curves and their theta surfaces, and we develop the numerical algebraic geometry of degenerations of theta functions.

Theta-Induced Diffusion on Tate Elliptic Curves over Non-Archimedean Local Fields

Abstract:A diffusion operator on the $K$-rational points of a Tate elliptic curve $E_q$ is constructed, where $K$ is a non-archimedean local field, as well as an operator on the Berkovich-analytification $E_q^{an}$ of $E_q$. These are integral operators for measures coming from a regular $1$-form, and kernel functions constructed via theta functions. The second operator can be described via certain non-archimedan curvature forms on $E_q^{an}$. The spectra of these self-adjoint bounded operators on the Hilbert spaces of $L^2$-functions are identical and found to consist of finitely many eigenvalues. A study of the corresponding heat equations yields a positive answer to the Cauchy problem, and induced Markov processes on the curve. Finally, some geometric information about the $K$-rational points of $E_q$ is retrieved from the spectrum.

Precision Asymptotics for Partitions Featuring False-Indefinite Theta Functions

Abstract:Andrews-Dyson-Hickerson, Cohen build a striking relation between q-hypergeometric series, real quadratic fields, and Maass forms. Thanks to the works of Lewis-Zagier and Zwegers we have a complete understanding on the part of these relations pertaining to Maass forms and false-indefinite theta functions. In particular, we can systematically distinguish and study the class of false-indefinite theta functions related to Maass forms. A crucial component here is the framework of mock Maass theta functions built by Zwegers in analogy with his earlier work on indefinite theta functions and their application to Ramanujan's mock theta functions. Given this understanding, a natural question is to what extent one can utilize modular properties to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the associated Fourier coefficients, especially in view of their relevance to combinatorial objects. In this paper, we develop the relevant methods to study such a question and show that quite detailed results can be obtained on the asymptotic development, which also enable Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher type exact formulas under the right conditions. We develop these techniques by concentrating on a concrete example involving partitions with parts separated by parity and derive an asymptotic expansion that includes all the exponentially growing terms.

Abstract:We describe algorithms to compute elliptic functions and their relatives (Jacobi theta functions, modular forms, elliptic integrals, and the arithmetic-geometric mean) numerically to arbitrary precision with rigorous error bounds for arbitrary complex variables. Implementations in ball arithmetic are available in the open source Arb library. We discuss the algorithms from a concrete implementation point of view, with focus on performance at tens to thousands of digits of precision.

Acquiring the Lefschetz thimbles: efficient evaluation of the diffraction integral for lensing in wave optics

Abstract:Evaluating the Kirchhoff-Fresnel diffraction integral is essential in studying wave effects in astrophysical lensing, but is often intractable because of the highly oscillatory integrated. A recent breakthrough was made by exploiting the Picard-Lefschetz theory: the integral can be performed along the `Lefschetz thimbles' in the complex domain where the integrand is not oscillatory but rapidly converging. The application of this method, however, has been limited by both the unfamiliar concepts involved and the low numerical efficiency of the method used to find the Lefschetz thimbles. In this paper, we give simple examples of the Lefschetz thimbles and define the `flow lines' that facilitate the understanding of the concepts. Based on this, we propose new ways to obtain the Lefschetz thimbles with high numerical efficiency, which provide an effective tool for studying wave effects in astrophysical lensing.

Abstract:There is not much that can be said for all $x$ and for all $n$ about the sum \[ \sum_{k=1}^n \frac{1}{|\sin k\pi x|}. \] However, for this and similar sums, series, and products, we can establish results for almost all $x$ using the tools of continued fractions. We present in detail the appearance of these sums in the singular series for the circle method. One particular interest of the paper is the detailed proof of a striking result of Hardy and Littlewood, whose compact proof, which delicately uses analytic continuation, has not been written freshly anywhere since its original publication. This story includes various parts of late 19th century and early 20th century mathematics.

Fast computation of integral bases

Abstract:We obtain new complexity bounds for computing a triangular integral basis of a number field or a function field. We reach for function fields a softly linear cost with respect to the size of the output when the residual characteristic is zero or big enough. Analogous results are obtained for integral basis of fractional ideals, key ingredients towards fast computation of Riemann-Roch spaces. The proof is based on the recent fast OM algorithm of the authors and on the MaxMin algorithm of Stainsby, together with optimal truncation bounds and a precise complexity analysis.

Abstract:In the prequel, a sharp bound in the level aspect on the fourth moment of Hecke--Maa{\ss} forms with an inexplicit (in fact exponential) dependency on the eigenvalue was given. In this paper, we develop further the framework of explicit theta test functions in order to capture the eigenvalue more precisely. We use this to reduce a sharp hybrid fourth moment bound to an intricate counting problem. Unconditionally, we give a hybrid bound, which is sharp in the level aspect and with a slightly larger than convex dependency on the eigenvalue.

Abstract:We present an efficient computational representation of central simple algebras using Brauer factor sets. Using this representation and polynomial quantum algorithms for number theoretical tasks such as factoring and $S$-unit group computation, we give a polynomial quantum algorithm for the explicit isomorphism problem over number field, which relies on a heuristic concerning the irreducibility of the characteristic polynomial of a random matrix with algebraic integer coefficients. We present another version of the algorithm which does not need any heuristic but which is only polynomial if the degree of the input algebra is bounded.
