Abstract:Neutron stars (NSs) have traditionally been viewed as cold, zero-temperature entities. However, recent progress in computational methods and theoretical modelling has opened up the exploration of finite temperature effects, marking a novel research frontier. This study examines Proto-Neutron Stars (PNSs) using the BigApple parameter set to investigate their macroscopic properties. Two approaches are employed: one with constant temperatures (10-50 MeV) and the other fixing entropy per baryon (S) at predefined levels (S = 1 and S = 2). Notably, S remains constant with increasing baryon density due to electron-positron pair formation at finite temperatures. Analysis of PNS mass-radius profiles, considering neutrino trapping and temperature effects, reveals flattened curves and expanded radii with increasing temperature, resulting in slightly higher masses compared to zero temperature. The influence of lepton fraction ($Y_l$) on maximum PNS mass is explored, indicating that higher $Y_l$ values lead to a softer Equation of State (EoS), reducing maximum mass and increasing the canonical radius ($R_{1.4}$). Further investigation of a constant entropy EoS demonstrates that higher entropy is associated with increased maximum PNS masses and flatter mass-radius curves. Central temperature versus maximum mass relationships suggest a correlation between NS mass and temperature. Lastly, we investigate the behaviour of $f$-mode frequencies in PNS. It reveals that the frequency of these modes decreases with increasing entropy and temperature, reflecting complex thermodynamic interactions within the stars.

Abstract:Nuclear reactions heat and cool the crust of accreting neutron stars and need to be understood to interpret observations of X-ray bursts and of long-term cooling in transiently accreting systems. It was recently suggested that previously neglected neutron transfer reactions may play a significant role in the nuclear processes. We present results from full nuclear network calculations that now include these reactions and determine their impact on crust composition, crust impurity, heating, and cooling. We find that a large number of neutron transfer reactions indeed occur and impact crust models. In particular, we identify a new type of reaction cycle that brings a pair of nuclei across the nuclear chart into equilibrium via alternating neutron capture and neutron release, interspersed with a neutron transfer. While neutron transfer reactions lead to changes in crust model predictions, and need to be considered in future studies, previous conclusions concerning heating, cooling, and compositional evolution are remarkably robust.

Abstract:Cooling curves of a neutron star are investigated within the minimal cooling scenario based on the Akmal- Pandharipande-Ravenhall (APR) equation of state. The Fermi surface depletion ( Z factor) of β -stable nuclear matter is calculated by employing a Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach with the AV18 two-body force supplemented by a microscopic three-body force. The Z factor of β -stable nuclear matter is computed to study its effects on three physical properties (superfluidity, neutrino emissivity, and heat capacity) which determine the neutron star thermal evolution. The calculated cooling curves reproduce well the mostly observed data when the Z factor was taken into account in the gap energies, neutrino emissivity, and heat capacity. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.065801 ©2024 American Physical Society

Non-equilibrium beta processes in superfluid neutron star cores

Abstract:The influence of nucleons superfluidity on the beta relaxation time of degenerate neutron star cores, composed of neutrons, protons and electrons, is investigated. We numerically calculate the implied reduction factors for both direct and modified Urca reactions, with isotropic pairing of protons or anisotropic pairing of neutrons. We find that due to the non-zero value of the temperature and/or to the vanishing of anisotropic gaps in some directions of the phase-space, superfluidity does not always completely inhibit beta relaxation, allowing for some reactions if the superfluid gap amplitude is not too large in respect to both the typical thermal energy and the chemical potential mismatch. We even observe that if the ratio between the critical temperature and the actual temperature is very small, a suprathermal regime is reached for which superfluidity is almost irrelevant. On the contrary, if the gap is large enough, the composition of the nuclear matter can stay frozen for very long durations, unless the departure from beta equilibrium is at least as important as the gap amplitude. These results are crucial for precise estimation of the superfluidity effect on the cooling/slowing-down of pulsars and we provide online subroutines to be implemented in codes for simulating such evolutions.

Abstract:Driven by recent laboratory experiments and astronomical observations, significant advances have deepened our understanding of neutron-star physics. NICER's Pulse Profile Modeling has refined our knowledge of neutron star masses and radii, while gravitational-wave detections have revealed key insights into the structure of neutron stars. Particularly relevant is the extraction of the tidal deformability by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration and the most recent determination of stellar radii by NICER, both suggesting a relatively soft equation of state (EOS) at intermediate densities. Additionally, measurements from the PREX collaboration and from pulsar timing suggest instead that the EOS is stiff in the vicinity of saturation density and at the highest densities accessible to date. But how stiff can the EOS be at these very high densities? Recent events featuring compact objects near the "lower mass gap" have raised questions about the existence of very massive neutron stars. Motivated by this finding and in light of new refinements to theoretical models, we explore the possibility that these massive objects may indeed be rapidly rotating neutron stars. We explore how rotation affects both the maximum neutron star mass and their associated radii, and discuss the implications they may have on the equation of state.

Investigating the role of nuclear parameters on oscillation modes in hot Neutron Stars

Abstract:Recent studies have revealed that certain nuclear parameters are more dominant than others in governing global neutron star properties, such as its structure or oscillation mode characteristics. Although neutron stars can in general assumed to be cold, in astrophysical scenarios such as newly born neutron stars or remnants of binary neutron star mergers, finite temperature effects play a non-negligible role. In this work, we perform a consistent and systematic investigation of the role of nuclear parameters and thermal effects on neutron star properties and fluid oscillation modes within a full general relativistic scheme. We impose constraints on the parameter space of the relativistic mean field model using state-of-the-art information from terrestrial experiments and multi-messenger astrophysical data. We find effective nucleon mass to be the most important nuclear parameter controlling astrophysical observables of hot neutron stars, similar to the cold beta equilibrated matter. However, we conclude that the interplay among saturation properties and astrophysical observables depends not only on the thermal configurations considered but also on the constraints imposed. We also investigated the role of nuclear saturation parameters on some universal relations for hot NSs which are important in gravitational wave asteroseismology. Our investigation confirmed that these relations are mostly insensitive to nuclear saturation properties and mainly affected by variation of charge fraction in the star.

Abstract:A general overview of the main physical processes driving the cooling of an isolated neutron star is presented. Among the most important ones are the various possible neutrino emission processes and the occurrence of baryon pairing. Special emphasis is also put on the importance of the chemical composition of the upper layers of the star. A detailed analysis of a Minimal Scenario, which explicitly postulates that no ``exotic'' form of matter be present, is summarized and compared with presently available observational data. No striking incompatibility of the data with the predictions of the Minimal Scenario is found. Nevertheless, two, possibly three, conspicuous stars are identified which may, when better data are available, constitute strong astrophysical evidence for the occurrence of a new state of matter at high density.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Mature neutron stars are expected to exhibit gravity g modes due to stratification caused by a varying matter composition. These modes are affected by nuclear reactions, leading to complex (damped) mode frequencies and the suppression of high-order g modes. This is in contrast with the common non-dissipative analysis which leads to an infinite g-mode spectrum. Focusing on the transition between the fast- and slow-reaction regimes, we examine the precise impact of nuclear reactions on the g-mode spectrum. The general framework for the analysis is presented along with sample numerical results for a matter model based on the BSk21 equation of state with a suitable parametrization for the reaction rates.

Abstract:The physics of compact objects is one of the very actively developing branches of theoretical investigations, since the careful analysis of different models for the internal structure of these objects, their evolutionary characteristics and the comparison with modern observational data give access to discriminate among various speculations about the state of matter under extreme conditions. The lecture provides an overview to the problem of neutron star cooling evolution. We discuss the scheme and necessary inputs for neutron star cooling simulations from the background of a microscopic modeling in order to present the surface temperature - age characteristics of hybrid neutron stars including the determination of main regulators of the cooling process, the question of neutrino production and diffusion.

Abstract:We investigate the cooling of neutron stars with relativistic and non-relativistic models of dense nuclear matter. We focus on the effects of uncertainties originated from the nuclear models, the composition of elements in the envelope region, and the formation of superfluidity in the core and the crust of neutron stars. Discovery of $2 M_\odot$ neutron stars PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0343+0432 has triggered the revival of stiff nuclear equation of state at high densities. In the mean time, observation of a neutron star in Cassiopeia A for more than 10 years has provided us with very accurate data for the thermal evolution of neutron stars. Both mass and temperature of neutron stars depend critically on the equation of state of nuclear matter, so we first search for nuclear models that satisfy the constraints from mass and temperature simultaneously within a reasonable range. With selected models, we explore the effects of element composition in the evenlope region, and the existence of superfluidity in the core and the crust of neutron stars. Due to uncertainty in the composition of particles in the envelope region we obtain a range of cooling curves that can cover substantial region of observation data.

Radial Oscillations of Neutron Stars with Antikaon Condensate

Abstract:In this article, we study the neutron stars with antikaon condensates and their radial oscillations. We incorporate the antikaons $(K^-,\bar{K}^0)$ within a relativistic mean field theory with density dependent couplings. A transition to the kaon condensed phase is treated as a second order phase transition for different possible antikaon optical potentials. Then, we solve the structure equations of stars and calculate the fundamental and higher order frequencies of their radial pulsations. We study the eigenfunctions of different radial modes for a $2M_\odot$ star with equations of state having different potential depths of antikaons. We also study the large frequency separations for the $2M_\odot$ star. We find distinct features of the appearances of antikaons on the eigenfunctions. The shape of the eigenfunctions corresponding to the radial perturbations is affected due to the appearance of the antikaons, but for the pressure perturbation, the shape remains unchanged.

Constraints on electrophilic scalar coupling from rotating magnetized stars and effects of cosmic neutrino background

Abstract:An ultralight electrophilic scalar field can produce a long-range Yukawa-like spatial profile around a rotating, magnetized star when coupled to the constant number density of electrons in either the magnetosphere or the star itself. This long-range scalar field generates an effective scalar charge in the star or its magnetosphere, leading to a long-range force between two compact stars in a binary system. The electrophilic scalar can also radiate from isolated pulsars or double pulsar binary systems. Using the Crab pulsar and PSR J0737-3039A/B as test cases, we derive constraints on the scalar-electron coupling by analyzing observations of long-range force, orbital period decay in binary systems, and pulsar spin-down rates. Among these, the most stringent limits on the coupling are obtained from the orbital period decay. However, these constraints can be significantly reduced if the scalar interacts with the pervasive cosmic neutrino background. Enhancing experimental sensitivity and studying compact objects with stronger magnetic fields and higher angular velocities could further strengthen these bounds.

Neutron Stars constraints on a late G transition

Abstract:It has been suggested recently that the Hubble tension could be eliminated by a sharp, $\sim 10\%$ increase of the effective gravitational constant at $z \sim 0.01$. This would decrease the luminosities of type 1a supernovae in just the needed amount to explain the larger value of the Hubble parameter. In the present paper we call attention to a dramatic effect of such transition on neutron stars. A neutron star that existed at $z=0.01$ would contract, conserving the baryon mass but undergoing a mass reduction. We computed neutron star models, with a realistic equation of state, and obtained that this reduction is typically $ 0.04 M_{\odot}$. This amounts to an energy of $7 \times 10^{52}$ erg. The transition will affect {\it all} neutron stars that formed along the history of each galaxy prior to the transition. Given the large number of neutron stars per galaxy, the liberated energy is huge. An estimate of the expected fluxes of neutrinos and x-rays yields values exceeding observational upper limits, thus rendering the late G transition scenario non-viable.

Abstract:The merger of binary neutron stars is likely to lead to differentially rotating remnants. In this paper, we numerically construct models of differentially rotating neutron stars in general relativity and determine their maximum allowed mass. We model the stars by adopting a polytropic equation of state and tabulate maximum allowed masses as a function of differential rotation and stiffness of the equation of state. We also provide a crude argument that yields a qualitative estimate of the effect of stiffness and differential rotation on the maximum allowed mass.
Two coexisting families of compact stars: observational implications for millisecond pulsars

Abstract:It is usually thought that a single equation of state (EoS) model "correctly" represents cores of all compact stars. Here we emphasize that two families of compact stars, viz., neutron stars and strange stars, can coexist in nature, and that neutron stars can get converted to strange stars through the nucleation process of quark matter in the stellar center. From our fully general relativistic numerical computations of the structures of fast-spinning compact stars, known as millisecond pulsars, we find that such a stellar conversion causes a simultaneous spin-up and decrease in gravitational mass of these stars. This is a new type of millisecond pulsar evolution through a new mechanism, which gives rise to relatively lower mass compact stars with higher spin rates. This could have implication for the observed mass and spin distributions of millisecond pulsars. Such a stellar conversion can also rescue some massive, spin-supported millisecond pulsars from collapsing into black holes. Besides, we extend the concept of critical mass $M_{\rm cr}$ for the neutron star sequence (Berezhiani et al. 2003; Bombaci et al. 2004) to the case of fast-spinning neutron stars, and point out that neutron star EoS models cannot be ruled out by the stellar mass measurement alone. Finally, we emphasize the additional complexity for constraining EoS models, for example, by stellar radius measurements using X-ray observations, if two families of compact stars coexist.

On the Evolution of Binary Neutron Stars

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the evolution of binary neutron stars, namely, their magnetic field, spin, and orbital evolution. The core of a neutron star is considered to be a superfluid, superconductor type II. Flux expulsion of the magnetic field out of the core of a single neutron star has been discussed by previous authors. However, the evolution of the core magnetic field is substantially different for a binary neutron star. While for a single neutron star the fluxoids of the proton superconductor always move outward through the core, in a binary neutron star in the accretion phase fluxoids move back into the core. The subsequent increase of the core magnetic field results in the increase of the surface magnetic field. We ask weather within the framework of this model the formation of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) is possible. We show that despite the increase of the core magnetic field, MSPs are formed in this model. The evolution of the neutron star with various orbital periods, magnetic fields, spin periods, and other parameters are numerically investigated. The equation of state of the neutron star, initial orbital period of the binary, and other parameters of the binary have substantial effects on the evolution of period vs. magnetic field.

Abstract:Highly magnetized neutron stars are promising candidates to explain some of the most peculiar astronomical phenomena, for instance, fast radio bursts, gamma-ray bursts, and superluminous supernovae. Pulsations of these highly magnetized neutron stars are also speculated to produce detectable gravitational waves. In addition, pulsations are important probes of the structure and equation of state of the neutron stars. The major challenge in studying the pulsations of highly magnetized neutron stars is the demanding numerical cost of consistently solving the nonlinear Einstein and Maxwell equations under minimum assumptions. With the recent breakthroughs in numerical solvers, we investigate pulsation modes of non-rotating neutron stars which harbour strong purely toroidal magnetic fields of $10^{15-17}$ G through two-dimensional axisymmetric general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations. We show that stellar oscillations are insensitive to magnetization effects until the magnetic to binding energy ratio goes beyond 10%, where the pulsation mode frequencies are strongly suppressed. We further show that this is the direct consequence of the decrease in stellar compactness when the extreme magnetic fields introduce strong deformations of the neutron stars.
