Abstract:Our homes are increasingly employing various kinds of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, leading to the notion of smart homes. While this trend brings convenience to our daily life, it also introduces cyber risks. To mitigate such risks, the demand for smart home cyber insurance has been growing rapidly. However, there are no studies on analyzing the competency of smart home cyber insurance policies offered by cyber insurance vendors (i.e., insurers), where `competency' means the insurer is profitable and smart home owners are not overly charged with premiums and/or deductibles. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for pricing smart home cyber insurance, which can be adopted by insurers in practice. Our case studies show, among other things, that insurers are over charging smart home owners in terms of premiums and deductibles.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the rationality and fairness of smart home network security insurance pricing. Specifically, with the wide application of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in households, the concept of smart homes has gradually become popular. Although this has brought great convenience to daily life, it has also introduced new network risks. To address these risks, the demand for smart home network security insurance in the market has grown rapidly. However, there is currently a lack of research on the effectiveness of smart home network security insurance policies. Here, "effectiveness" means that insurance companies can make a profit while smart home owners are not over - charged for premiums and deductibles. ### Core Problems of the Paper 1. **Lack of Research on the Effectiveness of Smart Home Network Security Insurance** - Currently, no research has analyzed the effectiveness of smart home network security insurance, that is, whether insurance companies can make a profit and users will not be over - charged. 2. **Irrationality of Existing Insurance Policies** - Existing smart home network security insurance policies may be irrational, such as high premiums or unreasonable deductibles, resulting in excessive burdens on users or unprofitable insurance companies. 3. **Market Sustainability Issues** - Due to the lack of transparent pricing methods, smart home owners cannot determine whether they are being charged reasonably, and insurance companies will not disclose their proprietary pricing methods. This affects the feasibility and sustainability of the market. ### Solutions To solve the above problems, the paper proposes a new framework for pricing smart home network security insurance. This framework aims to identify effective insurance policies to ensure that insurance companies can make a profit while smart home owners are not over - charged. The main steps include: 1. **Define the Smart Home Network Security Insurance Business Line** - According to different risk types (such as data leakage, service interruption, ransomware, etc.), divide insurance into multiple business lines. 2. **Identify and Represent Smart Home Network Security Risks** - Use vulnerability scanning tools to detect vulnerabilities in smart home devices and represent these vulnerabilities and their possible attack paths through graph theory methods. 3. **Model Smart Home Network Security Risks** - Model risks based on business lines and estimate the loss probability and total loss of different business lines. 4. **Determine Premiums and Deductibles** - Determine reasonable premiums and deductibles based on the estimated losses to ensure that insurance companies can make a profit while users are not over - charged. ### Case Studies The paper verifies the effectiveness of this framework through case studies and finds that the current smart home network security insurance has the following problems: - Insurance policies that require deductibles are over - charging. - Insurance policies that do not require deductibles are unprofitable. - The proposed new framework can enable insurance companies to remain profitable while users are not over - charged. In conclusion, this paper fills the gap in the research field of smart home network security insurance and provides a scientific and reasonable pricing method, which is helpful for promoting the healthy development of the smart home network security insurance market.
