Abstract:We provide a number of sufficient conditions for that minimizers of the one-dimensional Rudin-Osher-Fatemi functional satisfy the Dirichlet data in the trace sense. For this purpose we use results specific for the total variation flow. We also show a number of counterexamples.

Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. Abstract:We study a generalization of the manifold-valued Rudin-Osher-Fatemi (ROF) model, which involves an initial datum $f$ mapping from a curved compact surface with smooth boundary to a complete, connected and smooth $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We prove the existence and uniqueness of minimizers under curvature restrictions on the target and topological ones on the range of $f$. We obtain a series of regularity results on the associated PDE system of a relaxed functional with Neumann boundary condition. We apply these results to the ROF model to obtain Lipschitz regularity of minimizers without further requirements on the convexity of the boundary. Additionally, we provide a versions of the regularity statement of independent interest: for 1-dimensional domains (related to signal denoising), local Lipschitz regularity (meaningful for image processing) and Lipschitz regularity for a version of the Mosolov problem coming from fluid mechanics.

Due to the nature of driving operators, the most known techniques, basically based on ellipticity and monotonicity, are no longer applicable. Generalized solutions (in a suitable sense) are obtained via an approximation procedure and a corollary of the Brouwer fixed point theorem.

The proof is based on stochastic representation of solutions and properties of reflected diffusions corresponding to divergence form operators.

Abstract:We consider the functional given by the product of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue and the torsional rigidity of planar domains normalized by the area. This scale invariant functional was studied by Pólya and Szegő in 1951 who showed that it is bounded above by 1 for all domains. It has been conjectured that within the class of bounded convex planar domains the functional is bounded below by $\pi^{2}/24$ and above by $\pi^{2}/12$ and that these bounds are sharp. Remarkably, the conjecture remains open even within the class of triangles. The purpose of this paper is to prove the conjecture in this case. The conjecture is also proved for rectangles where a stronger monotonicity property is verified. Finally, the upper bound also holds for tangential quadrilateral.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a finite volume hyperbolic Riemann surface with arbitrary signature, and let $\chi$ be an arbitrary $m$-dimensional multiplier system of weight $k$. Let $R(s,\chi)$ be the associated Ruelle zeta function, and $\varphi(s,\chi)$ the determinant of the scattering matrix. We prove the functional equation that $R(s,\chi)\varphi(s,\chi) = R(-s,\chi)\varphi(s,\chi)H(s,\chi)$ where $H(s,\chi)$ is a meromorphic function of order one explicitly determined using the topological data of $M$ and of $\chi$, and the trigonometric function $\sin(s)$. From this, we determine the order of the divisor of $R(s,\chi)$ at $s=0$ and compute the lead coefficient in its Laurent expansion at $s=0$. When combined with results by Kitano and by Yamaguchi, we prove further instances of the Fried conjecture, which states that the R-torsion of the above data is simply expressed in terms of $R(0,\chi)$.

The Calderón problem on Riemannian surfaces and of minimal surfaces

Abstract:In this paper we prove two results. The first shows that the Dirichlet-Neumann map of the operator $\Delta_g+q$ on a Riemannian surface can determine its topological, differential, and metric structure. Earlier work of this type assumes a priori that the surface is a planar domain [36] or that the geometry is a priori known [29]. We will then apply this result to study a geometric inverse problem for determining minimal surfaces embedded in $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. In particular we will show that knowledge of the volumes of embedded minimal surfaces determine not only their topological and differential structure but also their Riemannian structure as an embedded hypersurface. Such geometric inverse problems are partially inspired by the physical models proposed by the AdS/CFT correspondence. The crucial ingredient in removing the planar domain assumption is the determination of the boundary trace of holomorphic functions from knowledge of the Dirichlet-Neumann map of $\Delta_g +q$. This requires a new type of argument involving Carleman estimates and construction of CGO whose phase functions are not Morse as in the case of [29]. We anticipate that these techniques could be of use for studying other inverse problems in geometry and PDE.

On the convergence of the Willmore flow with Dirichlet boundary conditions

Abstract:Very little is yet known regarding the Willmore flow of surfaces with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We consider surfaces with a rotational symmetry as initial data and prove a global existence and convergence result for solutions of the Willmore flow with initial data below an explicit, sharp energy threshold. Strikingly, this threshold depends on the prescribed boundary conditions - it can even be made to be $0$. We show sharpness for some critical boundary data by constructing surfaces above this energy threshold so that the corresponding Willmore flow develops a singularity. Finally, a Li-Yau inequality for open curves in $\mathbb{H}^2$ is proved.

Abstract:Given $K$ arbitrary poles, which are neither necessarily distinct nor bounded, on the extended real line, a corresponding ordered base of rational functions orthogonal with respect to varying exponential weights is constructed: this gives rise to a $K$-fold family of orthogonal rational functions (ORFs). The ORF problem is characterised as a family of $K$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems (RHPs) on the extended real line, and a corresponding family of $K$ energy minimisation (variational) problems containing external fields with singular points is formulated, and the existence, uniqueness, and regularity properties of the associated family of equilibrium measures is established. The family of $K$ equilibrium measures is used to derive a family of $K$ model matrix RHPs on the extended real line that are amenable to asymptotic analysis via the Deift-Zhou non-linear steepest-descent method: this is used to derive uniform asymptotics, in a certain double-scaling limit, of the ORFs and their leading coefficients, as well as related, important objects, in the entire complex plane. A family of $K$ multi-point Padé approximants (MPAs) for the Markov-Stieltjes transform is also presented, and uniform asymptotics, in a certain double-scaling limit, are obtained for the corresponding MPAs and their associated errors in approximation (MPA error terms) in the entire complex plane.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Dirichlet problems of fractional Laplace (Poisson) equations on a general bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Green's functions and Poisson kernels are important tools needed in our study. We first establish the existence of Green's function by an application of Perron's method. After that, the Poisson kernel is constructed based on the Green's function. Several important properties of Green's functions and Poisson kernels are proved. Finally, we show that the solution of a fractional Laplace (Poisson) equation under a given condition must be unique and be given by our Green's function and Poisson kernel.

Abstract:We prove the existence of the O-U Dirichlet form and the damped O-U Dirichlet form on path space over a general non-compact Riemannian manifold which is complete and stochastically complete. We show a weighted log-Sobolev inequality for the O-U Dirichlet form and the (standard) log-Sobolev inequality for the damped O-U Dirichlet form. In particular, the Poincaré inequality (and the super Poincaré inequality) can be established for the O-U Dirichlet form on path space over a class of Riemannian manifolds with unbounded Ricci curvatures. Moreover, we construct a large class of quasi-regular local Dirichlet forms with unbounded random diffusion coefficients on path space over a general non-compact manifold.

Abstract:Using the concept of fractional derivatives of Riemann$-$Liouville on time scales, we first introduce right fractional Sobolev spaces and characterize them. Then, we prove the equivalence of some norms in the introduced spaces, and obtain their completeness, reflexivity, separability and some imbeddings. Finally, as an application, we propose a recent method to study the existence of weak solutions of fractional boundary value problems on time scales by using variational method and critical point theory, and by constructing an appropriate variational setting, we obtain two existence results of the problem.

Abstract:Given a compact manifold $M$ equipped with smooth vector fields $X_1,\ldots, X_r$, we consider the generalized Dirichlet energy \[\mathbf{E}(f)= \sum_{j=1}^r\int_M |X_jf|^2\, dm,\] where $dm$ is a volume form, and ask if the set \[ \mathcal{B}=\{f\in L^2(M)\colon\,\mathbf{E}(f)+\lVert f\rVert_{L^2(M)}^2\leq 1 \} \] is precompact in $L^2(M)$. We find a geometric sufficient condition in terms of "iterated characteristic sets" and use it to show that, if the vector fields are tame (in the sense of o-minimality) and satisfy the Hörmander condition of some order $s$ on a dense set of points, then the only obstruction to precompactness is the existence of a characteristic submanifold (i.e. a nonempty submanifold of positive codimension to which each $X_j$ is tangent). Implications for global regularity of sum-of-squares operators not necessarily satisfying Hörmander condition are discussed in an appendix.

On asymptotics of Robin eigenvalues in the Dirichlet limit

Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian with homogeneous Robin boundary conditions, when the (positive) Robin parameter is diverging. In this framework, since the convergence of the Robin eigenvalues to the Dirichlet ones is known, we address the question of quantifying the rate of such convergence. More precisely, in this work we identify the proper geometric quantity representing (asymptotically) the first term in the expansion of the eigenvalue variation: it is a novel notion of torsional rigidity. Then, by performing a suitable asymptotic analysis of both such quantity and its minimizer, we prove the first-order expansion of any Robin eigenvalue, in the Dirichlet limit. Moreover, the convergence rate of the corresponding eigenfunctions is obtained as well. We remark that all our spectral estimates are explicit and sharp, and cover both the cases of convergence to simple and multiple Dirichlet eigenvalues.

Abstract:In this work, we study the short-time existence theory of Ricci-DeTurck flow starting from rough metrics which satisfy a Morrey-type integrability condition. Using the rough existence theory, we show the preservation and improvement of distributional scalar curvature lower bounds provided the singular set for such metrics is not too large. As an application, we use the Ricci flow smoothing to study the removable singularity for scalar curvature rigidity in the compact case under Morrey regularity conditions. Our result supplements those of Jiang-Sheng-Zhang.

Abstract:We first prove the equivalence of two definitions of Riemann-Liouville fractional integral on time scales, then by the concept of fractional derivative of Riemann-Liouville on time scales, we introduce fractional Sobolev spaces, characterize them, define weak fractional derivatives, and show that they coincide with the Riemann-Liouville ones on time scales. Next, we prove equivalence of some norms in the introduced spaces and derive their completeness, reflexivity, separability and some imbeddings. Finally, as an application, by constructing an appropriate variational setting, using the mountain pass theorem and the genus properties, the existence of weak solutions for a class of Kirchhoff-type fractional p-Laplacian systems on time scales with boundary condition is studied, and three results of the existence of weak solutions for this problem is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the existence and the properties for the minimisers of a special Helfrich functional for surfaces of revolution with Dirichlet boundary value conditions. Removing the even restriction for the admissible functions in [5], we prove that the minimiser is even and smooth, the minimal increases as the boundary value increases, and the minimiser is no less than the boundary value which answers an open question in [5] partly. We also obtain the existence and regularity for (general) Helfrich functional when the boundary value is large.

Abstract:We study a space-fractional Stefan problem with the Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is a model that describes superdiffusive phenomena. Our main result is the existence of the unique classical solution to this problem. In the proof we apply evolution operators theory and the Schauder fixed point theorem. It appears that studying fractional Stefan problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions requires a substantial modifications of the approach in comparison with the existing results for problems with different kinds of boundary conditions.
