Abstract:We study endperiodic maps of an infinite graph with finitely many ends. We prove that any such map is homotopic to an endperiodic relative train track map. Moreover, we show that the (largest) Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of the transition matrix is a canonical quantity associated to the map.

This paper serves as a review of these results and an introduction to the main ideas behind the proofs.

Abstract:In this paper we develop the theory of train track maps on graphs of groups. Expanding a definition of Bass, we define a notion of a map of a graph of groups, and of a homotopy equivalence. We prove that under one of two technical hypotheses, any homotopy equivalence of a graph of groups may be represented by a relative train track map. The first applies in particular to graphs of groups with finite edge groups, while the second applies in particular to certain generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups.

Abstract:Let $g\colon L\rightarrow L$ be an atoroidal, endperiodic map on an infinite type surface $L$ with no boundary and finitely many ends, each of which is accumulated by genus. By work of Landry, Minsky, and Taylor, $g$ is isotopic to a spun pseudo-Anosov map $f$. We show that spun pseudo-Anosov maps minimize the number of periodic points of period $n$ for sufficiently high $n$ over all maps in their homotopy class, strengthening a theorem of Landry, Minsky, and Taylor. We also show that the same theorem holds for atoroidal Handel--Miller maps when you only consider periodic points that lie in the intersection of the stable and unstable laminations.

Abstract:We study graphs with nonnegative Bakry-Émery curvature or Ollivier curvature outside a finite subset. For such a graph, via introducing the discrete Gromov-Hausdorff convergence we prove that the space of bounded harmonic functions is finite dimensional, and as a corollary the number of non-parabolic ends is finite.

Abstract:In this paper we will solve an open problem raised by Manásevich and Mawhin twenty years ago on the structure of the periodic eigenvalues of the vectorial $p$-Laplacian. This is an Euler-Lagrangian equation on the plane or in higher dimensional Euclidean spaces. The main result obtained is that for any exponent $p$ other than $2$, the vectorial $p$-Laplacian on the plane will admit infinitely many different sequences of periodic eigenvalues with a given period. These sequences of eigenvalues are constructed using the notion of scaling momenta we will introduce. The whole proof is based on the complete integrability of the equivalent Hamiltonian system, the tricky reduction to $2$-dimensional dynamical systems, and a number-theoretical distinguishing between different sequences of eigenvalues. Some numerical simulations to the new sequences of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions will be given. Several further conjectures towards to the panorama of the spectral sets will be imposed.

Periodic points of post-critically algebraic endomorphisms

Abstract:A holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ is post-critically algebraic if its critical hypersurfaces are periodic or preperiodic. This notion generalizes the notion of post-critically finite rational maps in dimension one. We will study the eigenvalues of the differential of such a map along a periodic cycle. When $n=1$, a well-known fact is that the eigenvalue along a periodic cycle of a post-critically finite rational map is either superattracting or repelling. We prove that when $n=2$ the eigenvalues are still either superattracting or repelling. This is an improvement of a result by Mattias Jonsson. When $n\geq 2$ and the cycle is outside the post-critical set, we prove that the eigenvalues are repelling. This result improves one which was already obtained by Fornaess and Sibony under a hyperbolicity assumption on the complement of the post-critical set.

Abstract:We generalise a result of Hosaka and Kato by proving that if the set of periodic points of a continuous map of a tree is closed then each chain recurrent point is a periodic one. We also show that the topological entropy of a tree map is zero if and only if the omega-limit set of each chain recurrent point (which is not periodic) contains no periodic points.

Abstract:Stallings remarked that an outer automorphism of a free group may be thought of as a subdivision of a graph followed by a sequence of folds. In this thesis, we prove that automorphisms of fundamental groups of graphs of groups satisfying this condition may be represented by irreducible train track maps in the sense of Bestvina-Handel (we allow collapsing invariant subgraphs). Of course, we construct relative train track maps as well. Along the way, we give a new exposition of the Bass-Serre theory of groups acting on trees, morphisms of graphs of groups, and foldings thereof. We produce normal forms for automorphisms of free products and extend an argument of Qing-Rafi to show that they are not quasi-geodesic. As an application, we answer affirmatively a question of Paulin: outer automorphisms of finitely-generated word hyperbolic groups satisfy a dynamical trichotomy generalizing the Nielsen-Thurston "periodic, reducible or pseudo-Anosov." At the end of the thesis we collect some open problems we find interesting.

Abstract:The problem of counting the number of different periodic orbits in continuous maps of an interval is solved. A map with m monotone pieces (laps) and m - 1 critical points may have at most m - 1 independent kneading sequences, which provide the most convenient parameters for the map. When one or more kneading sequences are kept constant or bound to vary simultaneously, Various degenerated cases of the map arise. The number of period n orbits of the general m-lap map as well as various degenerated cases is given by combinations of N-k(n) with k equal to or less than m, where N-m(n) is the number of period n orbits of a particular kind of degenerated m-lap map with only one kneading sequence. The quantity N-m(n) may be calculated or enumerated by many different methods, which are all discussed in this paper. We also give tabulated values for N-m(n) for m = 2 to 7.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to extend the results associated with periodic orbits from two-dimensions to higher-dimensions. Because of the one-to-one correspondence between solutions for the monotone recurrence relation and orbits for the induced high-dimensional cylinder twist map, we consider the system of solutions for monotone recurrence relations instead. By introducing intersections of type ( k , l ), we propose the definition of generalized Birkhoff solutions, generalizing the concept of Birkhoff solutions. We show that if there is a ( p , q )-periodic solution which is not a generalized Birkhoff solution, then the system has positive topological entropy and the Farey interval of p / q is contained in the rotation set.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the spatial property of the non-integrable discrete defocusing Hirota equation utilizing a planar nonlinear discrete dynamical map method. We construct the periodic orbit solutions of the stationary discrete defocusing Hirota equation. The behavior of the orbits in the vicinity of the special periodic solution is analyzed by taking advantage of the named residue. We characterize the effects of the parameters on the aperiodic orbits with the aid of numerical simulations. A comparison with the non-integrable discrete defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation case reveals that the non-integrable discrete defocusing Hirota equation has more abundant spatial properties. Rather an interesting and novel thing is that for any initial value, there exists triperiodic solutions for a reduced map.

Abstract:We can define six classes of endomorphisms on a graph, and they always form a chain based on set inclusion. The concepts of endomorphism type and endomorphism spectrum were introduced by Böttcher and Knauer in 1992. They provided a systematic and organized approach to study endomorphisms of graphs. In this paper, we focus on the double vertex wheel graphs and provide a detailed description of their endomorphism spectra and endomorphism types.

Abstract:We consider compact metric graphs with an arbitrary self adjoint realisation of the differential Laplacian. After discussing spectral properties of Laplacians, we prove several versions of trace formulae, relating Laplace spectra to sums over periodic orbits on the graph. This includes trace formulae with, respectively, absolutely and conditionally convergent periodic orbit sums; the convergence depending on properties of the test functions used. We also prove a trace formula for the heat kernel and provide small-$t$ asymptotics for the trace of the heat kernel.

Abstract:We consider the space of -diffeomorphims of a three dimensional closed manifold equipped with the -topology. It is known that there are open sets in which -generic diffeomorphisms display uncountably many chain recurrence classes, while only countably many of them may contain periodic orbits. The classes without periodic orbits, called aperiodic classes, are the main subject of this paper. The aim of the paper is to show that aperiodic classes of -generic diffeomorphisms can exhibit a variety of topological properties. More specifically, there are -generic diffeomorphisms with (1) minimal expansive aperiodic classes, (2) minimal but non-uniquely ergodic aperiodic classes, (3) transitive but non-minimal aperiodic classes, (4) non-transitive, uniquely ergodic aperiodic classes.
