Abstract:We propose a nonlinear filter for noise removal based on the Laplacian for 1D and 2D data. The method utilizes the solution to a fourth-order nonlinear PDE involving the Laplacian for data reconstruction. Evolution equations are introduced to solve this fourth-order nonlinear equation. Numerical experiments show that the new filter preserves discontinuities while filtering out noise. The restored data are piecewise linear and avoid the staircase effect commonly observed with total variation denoising methods.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem this paper attempts to address is the development of a nonlinear filter based on the Laplacian operator for denoising 1D and 2D data. Existing denoising methods, such as Gaussian filters, often fail to effectively preserve edges and discontinuities; while the Total Variation (TV) denoising method performs well in noise removal, the reconstructed data is often piecewise constant, leading to the so-called "staircase effect." Therefore, this paper proposes a new nonlinear filter aimed at removing noise while preserving discontinuities and avoiding the "staircase effect" of the TV method. Specifically, the model proposed in the paper utilizes a fourth-order nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) involving the Laplacian operator. This complex fourth-order nonlinear equation is solved by introducing an evolution equation. Numerical experiments show that the newly proposed filter can effectively remove noise while preserving discontinuities in images or data, and the restored data is piecewise linear, avoiding the "staircase effect" of the TV method. Additionally, the paper provides a detailed description of the application of this method to both one-dimensional and two-dimensional data. Comparative experiments with traditional TV denoising methods validate the effectiveness and superiority of the new method. Experimental results show that the new method performs well in handling both smooth functions and piecewise smooth functions, especially in significantly removing noise while better preserving the characteristics of the original data.
