Abstract:Let $f_t$ be a one-parameter family of rational maps defined over a number field $K$. We show that for all $t$ outside of a set of natural density zero, every $K$-rational preperiodic point of $f_t$ is the specialization of some $K(T)$-rational preperiodic point of $f$. Assuming a weak form of the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture, we also calculate the average number of $K$-rational preperiodic points of $f$, giving some examples where this holds unconditionally. To illustrate the theory, we give new estimates on the average number of preperiodic points for the quadratic family $f_t(z) = z^2 + t$ over the field of rational numbers.

Periodic points of rational functions over finite fields

Abstract:For $q$ a prime power and $\phi$ a rational function with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_q$, let $p(q,\phi)$ be the proportion of $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{F}_q)$ that is periodic with respect to $\phi$. And if $d$ is a positive integer, let $Q_d$ be the set of prime powers coprime to $d!$ and let $\mathcal{P}(d,q)$ be the expected value of $p(q,\phi)$ as $\phi$ ranges over rational functions with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_q$ of degree $d$. We prove that if $d$ is a positive integer no less than $2$, then $\mathcal{P}(d,q)$ tends to 0 as $q$ increases in $Q_d$. This theorem generalizes our previous work, which held only for quadratic polynomials, and only in fixed characteristic. To deduce this result, we prove a uniformity theorem on specializations of dynamical systems of rational functions with coefficients in certain finitely-generated algebras over residually finite Dedekind domains. This specialization theorem generalizes our previous work, which held only for algebras of dimension one.

Abstract:For a prime $p$, positive integers $r,n$, and a polynomial $f$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_{p^r}$, let $W_{p,r,n}(f)=f^n\left(\mathbb{F}_{p^r}\right)\setminus f^{n+1}\left(\mathbb{F}_{p^r}\right)$. As $n$ varies, the $W_{p,r,n}(f)$ partition the set of strictly preperiodic points of the dynamical system induced by the action of $f$ on $\mathbb{F}_{p^r}$. In this paper we compute statistics of strictly preperiodic points of dynamical systems induced by unicritical polynomials over finite fields by obtaining effective upper bounds for the proportion of $\mathbb{F}_{p^r}$ lying in a given $W_{p,r,n}(f)$. Moreover, when we generalize our definition of $W_{p,r,n}(f)$, we obtain both upper and lower bounds for the resulting averages.

Abstract:We extend a technique, originally due to the first author and Poonen, for proving cases of the Strong Uniform Boundedness Principle (SUBP) in algebraic dynamics over function fields of positive characteristic. The original method applied to unicritical polynomials for which the characteristic does not divide the degree. We show that many new 1-parameter families of polynomials satisfy the SUBP, including the family of all quadratic polynomials in even characteristic. We also give a new family of non-polynomial, non-Lattès rational functions that satisfies the SUBP.

Abstract:In this note we study common preperiodic points of rational maps of the Riemann Sphere. We show that given any degrees $d_1,d_2\geq2$, outside a Zariski closed subset of the space of pairs of rational maps $(f,g)$ of degree $d_1$ and $d_2$ respectively, the maps $f$ and $g$ share at most a uniformly bounded number of common preperiodic points. This generalizes a result of DeMarco and Mavraki to maps of possibly different degrees. Our main contribution is the use of Hölder properties of the Green function of a rational map to obtain height estimates.

Portraits of quadratic rational maps with a small critical cycle

Abstract:Motivated by a uniform boundedness conjecture of Morton and Silverman, we study the graphs of pre-periodic points for maps in three families of dynamical systems, namely the collections of rational functions of degree two having a periodic critical point of period $n$, where $n\in\{2,3,4\}$. In particular, we provide a conjecturally complete list of possible graphs of rational pre-periodic points in the case $n=4$, analogous to well-known work of Poonen for $n=1$, and we strengthen earlier results of Canci and Vishkautsan for $n\in\{2,3\}$. In addition, we address the problem of determining the representability of a given graph in our list by infinitely many distinct linear conjugacy classes of maps.

Simultaneously preperiodic points for a family of polynomials in positive characteristic

Abstract:In the goundbreaking paper [BD11] (which opened a wide avenue of research regarding unlikely intersections in arithmetic dynamics), Baker and DeMarco prove that for the family of polynomials $f_\lambda(x):=x^d+\lambda$ (parameterized by $\lambda\in\mathbb{C}$), given two starting points $a$ and $b$ in $\mathbb{C}$, if there exist infinitely many $\lambda\in\mathbb{C}$ such that both $a$ and $b$ are preperiodic under the action of $f_\lambda$, then $a^d=b^d$. In this paper we study the same question, this time working in a field of characteristic $p>0$. The answer in positive characteristic is more nuanced, as there are three distinct cases: (i) both starting points $a$ and $b$ live in $\Fpbar$; (ii) $d$ is a power of $p$; and (iii) not both $a$ and $b$ live in $\Fpbar$, while $d$ is not a power of $p$. Only in case~(iii), one derives the same conclusion as in characteristic $0$, i.e., that $a^d=b^d$. In case~(i), one has that for each $\lambda\in\Fpbar$, both $a$ and $b$ are preperiodic under the action of $f_\lambda$, while in case~(ii), one obtains that \emph{also} whenever $a-b\in\Fpbar$, then for each parameter $\lambda$, we have that $a$ is preperiodic under the action of $f_\lambda$ if and only if $b$ is preperiodic under the action of $f_\lambda$.

Abstract:Serre famously showed that almost all plane conics over $\mathbb{Q}$ have no rational point. We investigate versions of this over global function fields, focusing on a specific family of conics over $\mathbb{F}_2(t)$ which illustrates new behaviour. We obtain an asymptotic formula using harmonic analysis, which requires a new Tauberian theorem over function fields for Dirichlet series with branch point singularities.

Abstract:DeMarco, Krieger, and Ye conjectured that there is a uniform bound B , depending only on the degree d , so that any pair of holomorphic maps with degree will either share all of their preperiodic points or have at most in common. Here we show that this uniform bound holds for a Zariski open and dense set in the space of all pairs, , for each degree . The proof involves a combination of arithmetic intersection theory and complex-dynamical results, especially as developed recently by Gauthier and Vigny, Yuan and Zhang, and Mavraki and Schmidt. In addition, we present alternate proofs of the main results of DeMarco, Krieger, and Ye [ Uniform Manin-Mumford for a family of genus 2 curves , Ann. of Math. (2) 191 (2020), 949–1001; Common preperiodic points for quadratic polynomials , J. Mod. Dyn. 18 (2022), 363–413] and of Poineau [ Dynamique analytique sur II : Écart uniforme entre Lattès et conjecture de Bogomolov-Fu-Tschinkel , Preprint (2022), arXiv:2207.01574 [math.NT]]. In fact, we prove a generalization of a conjecture of Bogomolov, Fu, and Tschinkel in a mixed setting of dynamical systems and elliptic curves.

The geometry of preperiodic points in families of maps on $\mathbb{P}^N$

Abstract:We study the dynamics of algebraic families of maps on $\mathbb{P}^N$, over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers, and the geometry of their preperiodic points. The goal of this note is to formulate a conjectural characterization of the subvarieties of $S \times\mathbb{P}^N$ containing a Zariski-dense set of preperiodic points, where the parameter space $S$ is a quasiprojective complex algebraic variety; the characterization is given in terms of the non-vanishing of a power of the invariant Green current associated to the family of maps. This conjectural characterization is inspired by and generalizes the Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture for families of abelian varieties, recently proved by Gao and Habegger, and it includes as special cases the Manin-Mumford Conjecture (theorem of Raynaud) and the Dynamical Manin-Mumford Conjecture (posed by Ghioca, Tucker, and Zhang). We provide examples where the equivalence is known to hold, and we show that several recent results can be viewed as special cases. Finally, we give the proof of one implication in the conjectural characterization.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field with algebraic closure $\bar{K}$, let $S$ be a finite set of places of $K$ containing the archimedean places, and let $\varphi$ be Chebyshev polynomial. In this paper we prove uniformity results on the number of $S$-integral preperiodic points relative to a non-preperiodic point $\beta$, as $\beta$ varies over number fields of bounded degree.

Abstract:We compute the number of F_q-points on M_{4,n}, for n less than or equal to 3, and show that it is a polynomial in q, using a sieve based on Hasse-Weil zeta functions. As an application, we prove that the rational singular cohomology groups of moduli spaces of stable curves of genus g with n marked points vanish in all odd degrees less than or equal to 9, for all g and n. Both results confirm predictions of the Langlands program, via the conjectural correspondence with polarized algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of conductor 1, which are classified in low weight. Our vanishing result for odd cohomology resolves a problem posed by Arbarello and Cornalba in the 1990s.

Abstract:Given a quadratic polynomial with rational coefficients, we investigate the existence of consecutive squares in the orbit of a rational point under the iteration of the polynomial. We display three different constructions of -parameter quadratic polynomials with orbits containing three consecutive squares. In addition, we show that there exists at least one polynomial of the form with a rational point whose orbit under this map contains four consecutive squares. This can be viewed as a dynamical analogue of a question of Fermat on rational squares in arithmetic progression. Finally, assuming a standard conjecture on exact periods of periodic points of quadratic polynomials over the rational field, we give necessary and sufficient conditions under which the orbit of a periodic point contains only rational squares.

Abstract:The aim of the present paper is to derive effective discrepancy estimates for the distribution of rational points on general semisimple algebraic group varieties, in general families of subsets and at arbitrarily small scales. We establish mean-square, almost sure and uniform estimates for the discrepancy with explicit error bounds. We also prove an analogue of W. Schmidt's theorem, which establishes effective almost sure asymptotic counting of rational solutions to Diophantine inequalities in the Euclidean space. We formulate and prove a version of it for rational points on the group variety, with an effective bound which in some instances can be expected to be the best possible.

Arithmetic properties of families of plane polynomial automorphisms

Abstract:Given an algebraic family $f\colon\Lambda\times \mathbb{A}^2 \to \Lambda\times \mathbb{A}^2$ of plane polynomial automorphisms of Hénon type parameterized by a quasi-projective curve, defined over a number field $\mathbb{K},$ we investigate certain arithmetic properties of periodic points contained in a family of subvarieties $X \subset \Lambda \times \mathbb{A}^2 \twoheadrightarrow \Lambda$. First, consider $X$ as a curve. We prove that the set of parameters $t\in\Lambda(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$, such that $X_t$ is periodic, has bounded height. This generalizes a result of Patrick Ingram. Moreover, if $X$ is non-periodic, then under some mild conditions -- such as when the family is dissipative -- we show that there are, in fact, only finitely many periodic parameters. This extends a result of Charles Favre and Romain Dujardin. Second, let $X$ be a family of curves. Assuming $X$ is non-degenerate, we establish a uniform bound on the number of periodic points in each curve $X_t$, $t\in \Lambda(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ and show that the set of these periodic points have bounded height in $\Lambda\times \mathbb{A}^2$ as well. We then examine in more detail the non-degeneracy property in the case of dissipative families of quadratic Hénon maps.

On the Iterated Monodromy Groups of Quadratic Rational functions with periodic critical points

Abstract:Let $f$ be a quadratic rational function defined over a field of characteristic not equal to $2$. We assume that the critical points of $f$ are all periodic. We first determine the geometric iterated monodromy group up to conjugacy and prove that it is of weakly branch type. This type of result was previously only known for the discrete iterated monodromy groups of PCF quadratic polynomials due to work of Bartholdi and Nekrashevyich. Furthermore, motivated by a question of Jones and Levy on settled pairs, we study odometers in the iterated monodromy groups of rational functions. We show that if the critical points have non-intersecting orbits, then the geometric iterated monodromy group always have odometers. If the critical points lie in the same orbit, then we give a divisibility condition depending only on the length $r$ of the postcritical set and $s$ where the critical points are given by $p_1$ and $f^{s-1}(p_1)$. We show that in the absence of odometers in the geometric iterated monodromy group, neither the arithmetic iterated monodromy group of $f$ nor the Arboreal representation attached to $(f,\alpha)$, for any $\alpha \in K$, contains any settled elements. This answers the question of Jones and Levy on settled pairs in negative.

Abstract:Let $${\phi}$$ be a rational function of degree at least two defined over a number field k. Let $${a \in \mathbb{P}^1(k)}$$ and let K be a number field containing k. We study the cardinality of the set of rational iterated preimages Preim$${(\phi, a, K) = \{x_{0} \in \mathbb{P}^1(K) | \phi^{N} (x_0) = a {\rm for some} N \geq 1\}}$$. We prove two new results (Theorems 2 and 4) bounding $${|{\rm Preim}(\phi, a, K)|}$$ as $${\phi}$$ varies in certain families of rational functions. Our proofs are based on unit equations and a method of Runge for effectively determining integral points on certain affine curves. We also formulate and state a uniform boundedness conjecture for Preim$${(\phi, a, K)}$$ and prove that a version of this conjecture is implied by other well-known conjectures in arithmetic dynamics.

Abstract:For a polynomial $u(x)$ in $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ and $r\in\mathbb{Z}$, we consider the orbit of $u$ at $r$ denoted and defined by $\mathcal{O}_u(r):=\{u^{(n)}(r)~|~n\in\mathbb{N}\}$. Here we study polynomials for which $0$ is in the orbit, and we call such polynomials \textit{nilpotent at }$r$ of index $m$ where $m$ is the minimum element of the set $\{n\in\mathbb N~|~u^{(n)}(r)=0\}$. We provide here a complete classification of these polynomials when $|r|\le 4$, with $|r|\le 1$ already covered in the author's previous paper, titled \textit{Locally nilpotent polynomials over $\mathbb Z$}. The central goal of this paper is to study the following questions: (i) relation between the integers $r$ and $m$ when the set of nilpotent polynomials at $r$ of index $m$ is non-empty, (ii) classification of the integer polynomials with nilpotency index $|r|$ for large enough $|r|$, and (iii) bounded integer polynomial sequences $\{r_n\}_{n\ge 0}$.
