Abstract:We apply methods of algebraic integral geometry to prove a special case of the Gaussian kinematic formula of Adler-Taylor. The idea, suggested already by Adler and Taylor, is to view the GKF as the limit of spherical kinematic formulas for spheres of large dimension $N$ and curvature $\frac 1 N$.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:Gravity is a phenomenon which arises due to the space-time geometry. The main equations that describe gravity are the Einstein equations. To understand the consequences of these field equations we need to calculate the free particle worldlines to the geometries, which solve these field equations e.g. the Schwarzschild metric solves the Einstein equations and we would need to solve the geodesic equations to this metric. If we were to describe the space-time geometry in terms of geodesics instead of the metric, we could skip the step of solving for the metric and solve for the geodesics directly. In this work we have developed a formalism doing that: we use the bundle of the arclength parametrized geodesics (geodesic flow bundle GFB) from all points in the manifold to describe a Riemannian geometry. Our formalism uses infinitesimal spherical triangles as generating elements, to solve geometric problems. We relate the geodesic flow bundle to Gaussian curvature and develop a method to calculate the geodesics geometrically starting from a Gaussian curvature field. The result amounts to a generalization of the cosine- and sine-laws for constant curvature to varying curvature fields. In this work we restrict ourselves to the Riemannian case and positive curvature fields. We expand the triangulation problem in power series and calculate the main result up to second order. The method itself could be extended to treat more generic cases in particular pseudo-Riemannian geometries which relate directly to Einsteins equations. We test our results against the sphere and perform consistency checks for some examples of varying curvature fields. As a by-product we generalize the notion of integration to products and derive a relation analogue to the main theorem of calculus, for product integrals.

On the adelic Gaussian hypergeometric function

Abstract:We define the adelic hypergeometric function of special Gaussian type by means of a tower of hypergeometric curves. This function takes values in an adelic completed group ring and interpolates all the hypergeometric functions of the same type over all finite fields. It specializes at the unit argument to the adelic beta function of Ihara and Anderson. We prove some transformation formulas and a summation formula for the adelic hypergeometric function, which are known classically for complex hypergeometric functions.

Kohler-Jobin meets Ehrhard: the sharp lower bound for the Gaussian principal frequency while the Gaussian torsional rigidity is fixed, via rearrangements

Abstract:In this note, we provide an adaptation of the Kohler-Jobin rearrangement technique to the setting of the Gauss space. As a result, we prove the Gaussian analogue of the Kohler-Jobin's resolution of a conjecture of Pólya-Szegö: when the Gaussian torsional rigidity of a (convex) domain is fixed, the Gaussian principal frequency is minimized for the half-space. At the core of this rearrangement technique is the idea of considering a "modified" torsional rigidity, with respect to a given function, and rearranging its layers to half-spaces, in a particular way; the Rayleigh quotient decreases with this procedure. We emphasize that the analogy of the Gaussian case with the Lebesgue case is not to be expected here, as in addition to some soft symmetrization ideas, the argument relies on the properties of some special functions; the fact that this analogy does hold is somewhat of a miracle.

Abstract:In a given geometry, the kinematics of a congruence of curves is described by a set of three quantities called expansion, rotation, and shear. The equations governing the evolution of these quantities are referred to as kinematic equations. In this paper, the kinematics of congruence of curves in a metric-affine geometry are analysed. Without assuming an underlying theory of gravity, we derive a generalised form of the evolution equations for expansion, namely, Raychaudhuri equation (timelike congruences) and Sachs optical equation (null congruences). The evolution equations for rotation and shear of both timelike and null congruences are also derived. Generalising the deviation equation, we find that torsion and non-metricity contribute to a relative acceleration between neighbouring curves. We briefly discuss the interpretation of the expansion scalars and derive an equation governing angular diameter distances. The effects of torsion and non-metricity on the distances are found to be dependent on which curves are chosen as photon trajectories. We also show that the rotation of a hypersurface orthogonal congruence (timelike or null) is a purely non-Riemannian feature.

Additive kinematic formulas for convex functions

Abstract:We prove a functional version of the additive kinematic formula as an application of the Hadwiger theorem on convex functions together with a Kubota-type formula for mixed Monge-Ampère measures. As an application, we give a new explanation for the equivalence of the representations of functional intrinsic volumes as singular Hessian valuations and as integrals with respect to mixed Monge-Ampère measures. In addition, we obtain a new integral geometric formula for mixed area measures of convex bodies, where integration on $\operatorname{SO}(n-1)\times \operatorname{O}(1)$ is considered.

Abstract:Fefferman [22] initiated a program of expressing the asymptotic expansion of the boundary singularity of the Bergman kernel for strictly pseudoconvex domains explicitly in terms of boundary invariants. Hirachi, Komatsu and Nakazawa [30] carried out computations of the first few terms of Fefferman's asymptotic expansion building partly on Graham's work on CR invariants and Nakazawa's work on the asymptotic expansion of the Bergman kernel for strictly pseudoconvex complete Reinhardt domains. In this paper, we prove a formula for coefficients in Nakazawa's asymptotic expansion as explicit summations over strongly connected graphs, and a formula expressing partial derivatives of Kahler metrics (resp. functions) as summations over rooted trees encoding covariant derivatives of curvature tensors (resp. functions). These formulae shall be useful in studying general patterns of Fefferman's asymptotic expansion.

Abstract:This work aims to extend part of the two dimensional results of Duplantier and Sheffield on Liouville quantum gravity to four dimensions, and indicate possible extensions to other even-dimensional spaces R^(2n) as well as Riemannian manifolds. Let "\Theta" be the Gaussian free field on R^4 with the underlying Hilbert space being the Sobolev space H^2 witb the inner product determined by the operator (I-\Delta)^2. Assume "\theta" is a generic element from \Theta. We consider a sequence of random Borel measures on R^4, each of which is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure dx and the density function is given by the exponential of a centered Gaussian family parametrized by x in R^4. We show that with probability 1, this sequence of measures weakly converges to a limit random measure which can be "formally" written as "exp(2\gamma\theta(x)dx". In this setting, we also prove a KPZ relation, which is the quadratic relation between the scaling exponent of a bounded Borel set on R^4 under the Lebesgue measure and its counterpart under the random measure obtained above. Our approach is similar to the one used by Duplantier and Sheffield in 2D but with adaptations to R^4.

Abstract:Taylor's Law, also known as fluctuation scaling, manifests a power relation between the means and the variances of statistical distributions. The class of Gaussian-selfsimilar stochastic motions offers a plethora of macroscopic diffusion models, regular and anomalous alike. This class includes Brownian motion, scaled Brownian motion, fractional Brownian motion, and more. Within this class, power Brownian motion is the sub-class of motions that are also Markovian. Considering conditional distributions of motion positions, this paper establishes that: the Gaussian-selfsimilar class universally generates Taylor's Law, doing so with both positive and negative Taylor exponents. The paper also unveils a profound interplay between power Brownian motion, and the universal generation of Taylor's Law from the Gaussian-selfsimilar class.

A Gaussian integral that counts regular graphs

Abstract:In a recent article J. Phys. Compl. 4 (2023) 035005, Kawamoto evoked statistical physics methods for the problem of counting graphs with a prescribed degree sequence. This treatment involved truncating a particular Taylor expansion at the first two terms, which resulted in the Bender-Canfield estimate for the graph counts. This is surprisingly successful since the Bender-Canfield formula is asymptotically accurate for large graphs, while the series truncation does not a priori suggest a similar level of accuracy. We upgrade the above treatment in three directions. First, we derive an exact formula for counting d-regular graphs in terms of a d-dimensional Gaussian integral. Second, we show how to convert this formula into an integral representation for the generating function of d-regular graph counts. Third, we perform explicit saddle point analysis for large graph sizes and identify the saddle point configurations responsible for graph count estimates. In these saddle point configurations, only two of the integration variables condense to significant values, while the remaining ones approach zero for large graphs. This provides an underlying picture that justifies Kawamoto's earlier findings.

Abstract:Gaussian processes (GPs) are widely-used tools in spatial statistics and machine learning and the formulae for the mean function and covariance kernel of a GP $T u$ that is the image of another GP $u$ under a linear transformation $T$ acting on the sample paths of $u$ are well known, almost to the point of being folklore. However, these formulae are often used without rigorous attention to technical details, particularly when $T$ is an unbounded operator such as a differential operator, which is common in many modern applications. This note provides a self-contained proof of the claimed formulae for the case of a closed, densely-defined operator $T$ acting on the sample paths of a square-integrable (not necessarily Gaussian) stochastic process. Our proof technique relies upon Hille's theorem for the Bochner integral of a Banach-valued random variable.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the following prescribed Gaussian curvature problem: K = (f)over tilde>(theta)/phi(r)(alpha-2)root phi(r)2 + vertical bar(del) over bar rho vertical bar(2), a generalization of the Alexandrov problem (alpha = n + 1) in hyperbolic space, where (f)over tilde> is a smooth positive function on S-n, rho is the radial function of the hypersurface, phi(rho) = sinh rho and K is the Gauss curvature. By a flow approach, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the above equations when alpha >= n + 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in smooth category for the Alexandrov problem in Hn+1. We also consider the cases 2 < a <= n + 1 under the evenness assumption of <(f)over tilde> and prove the existence of solutions to the above equations.

Abstract:Alvarez-Consul--Garcia-Fernandez--Garcia-Prada introduced the Kähler-Yang-Mills equations. They also introduced the $\alpha$-Futaki character, an analog of the Futaki invariant, as an obstruction to the existence of the Kähler-Yang-Mills equations. The equations depend on a coupling constant $\alpha$. Solutions of these equations with coupling constant $\alpha>0$ are of utmost importance. In this paper, we provide a formula for the $\alpha$-Futaki character on certain ample line bundles over toric manifolds. We then show that there are no solutions with $\alpha>0$ on certain ample line bundles over certain toric manifolds and compute the value of $\alpha$ if a solution exists. We also relate our result to the existence result of Keller-Friedman in dimension-two.

Abstract:The Gauss-Bonnet Formula is a significant achievement in 19th century differential geometry for the case of surfaces and the 20th century cumulative work of H. Hopf, W. Fenchel, C. B. Allendoerfer, A. Weil and S.S. Chern for higher-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. It relates the Euler characteristic of a Riemannian manifold to a curvature integral over the manifold plus a somewhat enigmatic boundary term. In this paper, we revisit the formula using the formalism of double forms, a tool introduced by de Rham, and further developed by Kulkarni, Thorpe, and Gray. We explore the geometric nature of the boundary term and provide some examples and applications.

Abstract:Embedding Feynman integrals in Grassmannians, we express Feynman integrals as linear combinations of generalized hypergeometric functions. Here we present general methods to obtain Gauss relations among those generalized hypergeometric functions. The hypergeometric expressions of Feynman integral are analytically continued from some connected component to another by the Gauss inverse relations, then continued to the whole domain of definition by the Gauss-Kummer relations. The Laurant series of the Feynman integral around the time-space dimension $D=4$ is obtained by the Gauss adjacent relations where the coefficients of powers of $D-4$ are given as some finite linear combinations of hypergeometric functions with integer parameters. As an example, we illustrate how to use the method to obtain the analytic expression of the Feynman integral of one-loop self energy in its whole domain of definition.

Abstract:We consider the asymptotics of $k$-dimensional spherical integrals when $k = o(N)$. We prove that the $o(N)$-dimensional spherical integrals are approximately the products of $1$-dimensional spherical integrals. Our formulas extend the results for $k$-dimensional spherical integrals proved by Guionnet and Maïda in [29] and Husson and Guionnet in [34] which are only valid for $k$ finite and independent of $N$. These approximations will be used to prove a large deviation principle for the joint $2k(N)$ extreme eigenvalues for sharp sub-Gaussian Wigner matrices and for additive deformations of GOE/GUE matrices. Furthermore, our results will be used to compute the free energies of spherical SK vector spin glasses and the mutual information for matrix estimation problems when the dimensions of the spins or signals have sublinear growth.

Abstract:We introduce the F-adjoined Gauss map. We use it to express the Gaussian maximum likelihood degree as a product of two invariants. As an application of our product formula, we classify all projective curves of Gaussian maximum likelihood degree 1. We also provide a formula for the generic Gaussian maximum likelihood degree of a projective variety $X$ in terms of its polar classes. The renowned polar class formula for generic Euclidean distance degree is a special case of our formula.
