Abstract:The non-perturbative processes - the internal transverse motion of partons inside hadrons, which gives rise to their intrinsic transverse momentum (intrinsic-kT) - and multiple soft gluon emissions that need to be resummed, are dominant contributions to the low transverse momentum of the Drell-Yan (DY) pair cross section. Therefore, this part of the DY spectra serves as a powerful tool for a better understanding of such processes, which is the focus of the study presented here. The study is conducted using the Parton Branching Method, which describes Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) Parton Densitity Functions (PDF) and provides a very precise description of DY pair transverse momentum distributions across a wide range of collision energies and pair invariant masses. In contrast to the energy dependence of intrinsic kT observed in shower-based Monte Carlo event generators, the CASCADE3 event generator - based on the Parton Branching Method - has provided an intrinsic-kT distribution that is independent of the center of mass energy. Further studies conducted within the Parton Branching Method have sought to understand the origin of this energy dependence, indicating that the dependence is mainly a consequence of the interplay between two main processes: internal transverse motion and soft gluon emission. The latter has been reduced in shower-based event generators, primarily due to the non-perturbative Sudakov form factor, which is often neglected. Since the Sudakov form factor depends on the evolution scale, this paper explores this dependence through the interplay of the two processes and attempts to explain it. Additionally, since QED final state radiation affects the profile of the DY pair transverse momentum distribution, we investigate its impact in both the high and low DY pair invariant mass regions.

Abstract:Understanding the intrinsic transverse momentum (intrinsic-$k_T$) of partons within colliding hadrons, typically modeled with a Gaussian distribution characterized by a specific width (the intrinsic-$k_T$ width), has been an extremely challenging issue. This difficulty arises because event generators like Pythia require an intrinsic-$k_T$ width that unexpectedly varies with collision energy, reaching unphysical values at high energies. This paper investigates the underlying physics behind this energy dependence in Pythia, revealing that it arises from an interplay between two non-perturbative processes: the internal transverse motion of partons and non-perturbative soft gluon emissions. These contributions are most constrained in the production of Drell-Yan pairs with very low transverse momentum, where soft gluon effects become increasingly prominent with rising collision energy-contrary to initial expectations. Through a detailed analysis of the non-perturbative Sudakov form factor and its influence on intrinsic-$k_T$ width, we clarify the observed energy scaling behavior in Pythia, providing insight into a longstanding issue in parton shower modeling.

Abstract:The internal motion of partons inside hadrons has been studied through its impact on very low transverse momentum spectra of Drell-Yan (DY) pairs created in hadron-hadron collisions. We study DY production at next-to-leading order using the Parton Branching (PB) method which describes the evolution of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. The main focus is on studying the intrinsic transverse momentum distribution (intrinsic-$k_T$) as a function of the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s$. While collinear parton shower Monte Carlo event generators require intrinsic transverse momentum distributions strongly dependent on $\sqrt s$, this is not the case for the PB method. We perform a detailed study of the impact of soft parton emissions. We show that by requiring a minimal transverse momentum, $q_0$, of a radiated parton, a dependence of the width of the intrinsic-$k_T$ distribution as a function of $\sqrt{s}$ is observed. This dependence becomes stronger with increasing $q_0$.

Toward a first-principles description of transverse momentum dependent Drell-Yan production in proton-nucleus collisions

Abstract:In this paper, we study the parton dynamics in Drell-Yan collisions involving proton-nuclei interactions in the limit of small transverse momentum, emphasizing the role of the cold nuclear matter effects. The distribution of transverse momentum that enter into these collisions differs from that in Drell-Yan collisions with free nucleons in two distinct ways: the intrinsic parton structure of the TMDs are altered, the perturbative dynamics undergo additional modification due to interactions with the nuclear medium. In this paper, we focus on the perturbative dynamics, which we demonstrate enter from forward scattering between the parton constituents of the proton and the nuclear medium. We then derive these partonic contributions to the TMD Drell-Yan cross section up to next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant and to the first order in the medium opacity. We demonstrate that the collinear and rapidity divergences related to parton showers in matter lead to i) an in-medium renormalization group equation that encodes the transverse momentum dependence of parton energy loss, and ii) a Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov evolution equation for the forward scattering cross section. We discuss the relation of our results to the phenomenological extraction of nuclear TMDs and apply the new formalism to Drell-Yan production at small transverse momenta in $p$+$A$ reactions.

Abstract:In the target rest frame and at high energies, Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production looks like bremsstrahlung of massive photons, rather than parton annihilation. The projectile quark is decomposed into a series of Fock states. Configurations with fixed transverse separations are interaction eigenstates for pp scattering. The DY cross section can then be expressed in terms of the same color dipole cross section as DIS. This approach is especially suitable to describe nuclear effects, since it allows to apply Glauber multiple scattering theory. We go beyond the Glauber eikonal approximation by taking into account transitions between interaction eigenstates. We calculate nuclear shadowing at large Feynman-x_F for DY in proton-nucleus collisions, compare to existing data from E772 and make predictions for RHIC. Nuclear effects on the transverse momentum distribution are also investigated.

NLO Analysis of Small-$k_T$ Region in Drell-Yan Production with Parton Branching

Abstract:The Parton-Branching Method (PB) facilitates the determination of Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton densities across a wide \kt\ range, spanning small to large transverse momentum scales. In the small $k_T$ region, both intrinsic parton motion and resummed ultra-soft gluons are significant contributors. Our analysis highlights their crucial role in shaping integrated and TMD parton densities. Using PB-derived TMD parton densities and a NLO calculation in MC@NLO style, we compute the transverse momentum spectrum of Drell-Yan pairs across a broad mass range. The spectrum's sensitivity to the intrinsic $k_T$ distribution allows us to fine-tune parametric parameters. Starting from the PB-NLO-HERAI+II-2018 set2 TMD parton distributions, we determine the intrinsic $k_T$ distribution width, resulting in a slightly wider profile than the default set. Importantly, this width remains independent of Drell-Yan pair mass and center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$), distinguishing our approach.

Abstract:The parton branching method is crucial for Monte Carlo generators, which are essential for high-energy physics predictions. We examine the impact of soft gluons on inclusive collinear and Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton densities. By applying the Parton-Branching (PB) method, we identify the non-perturbative Sudakov form factor with the integration range $z \to 1$, which is often neglected in collinear parton shower approaches. The significance of soft gluons is demonstrated through the transverse momentum spectrum of Drell-Yan lepton pairs, resulting in an intrinsic-$k_t$ distribution width that remains independent of $\sqrt(s)$, contrary to observations in collinear parton shower approaches. This behavior is attributed to the non-perturbative Sudakov form factor.

Abstract:We study the spin-dependent quark distributions at large transverse momentum in the collinear factorization approach. The naive-time-reversal-even and k⊥-odd quark distributions are calculated in terms of a class of twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions. We further calculate the angular distribution of the Drell-Yan lepton pair production in the polarized nucleon-nucleon collisions. In the intermediate transverse momentum region, we find that the two approaches, the collinear factorization and the transverse momentum dependent factorization, are consistent in the description of the lepton pair angular distributions.

Abstract:Intrinsic transverse parton momenta pT play an important role in the understanding of azimuthal/spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and the Drell-Yan process (DY). We review and update what is presently known about pT from these processes. In particular, we address the question to which extent data support the popular Gauss model for the pT-distributions. We find that the Gauss model works very well, and observe that the intrinsic transverse momenta in SIDIS and DY are compatible, which is a support for the factorization approach. As a byproduct we recover a simple but practical way of taking into account the energy dependence of pT-distributions.

Abstract:We consider the diffractive Drell-Yan process in proton-(anti)proton collisions at high energies in the color dipole approach. The calculations are performed at forward rapidities of the leptonic pair. Effect of eikonalization of the universal "bare"dipole-target elastic amplitude in the saturation regime takes into account the principal part of the gap survival probability. We present predictions for the total and differential cross sections of the single diffractive lepton pair production at RHIC and LHC energies. We analyze implications of the QCD factorisation breakdown in the diffractive Drell-Yan process, which is caused by a specific interplay of the soft and hard interactions, and resulting in rather unusual properties of the corresponding observables.

Abstract:We explore the mechanism of transverse momentum broadening of fast quarks propagating in nuclei, using Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum distributions measured in the experiment E866 at FermiLab with beams of 800 GeV protons. Our theoretical analysis is based on the color dipole approach in the target rest frame, which has provided a successful phenomenological description of a variety of hadronic reactions. The present application is relevant to the regime of short coherence length (SCL), where the spatial extent of the fluctuations of the projectile responsible for the Drell-Yan reaction is short compared to the internucleon spacing. In this limit, momentum broadening comes from initial state interactions and is described as color filtering, i.e. absorption of large-size dipoles leading to diminished transverse separation and hence enhanced transverse momentum. The predictions we present are in good agreement with the E866 data. The interactions leading to the acquisition of transverse momentum arise from the color-dipole cross section determined previously from deep-inelastic scattering on proton targets. Aside from the determination of the color-dipole cross section, no other phenomenological input is needed to explain the experimental results. The mean-square momentum broadening of dileptons determined in a recent separate analysis of the data is likewise well described by our theory. These results confirm that the origin of momentum broadening in DY is the color dipole cross section mediating soft initial state interactions between the parton of the projectile that initiates the reaction and the nucleons of the nucleus, as provided by the color dipole description. Predictions for broadening observables at RHIC are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we study phenomenologically interesting soft radiation distributions in massless QCD. Specifically, we consider the emission of two soft partons off of a pair of lightlikeWilson lines, in either the fundamental or the adjoint representation, at next-to-leading order. Our results are an essential component of the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order threshold corrections to both Higgs boson production in the gluon fusion channel and Drell-Yan lepton production. Our calculations are consistent with the recently published results for Higgs boson production. As a nontrivial cross-check on our analysis, we rederive a recent prediction for the Drell-Yan threshold cross section using a completely different strategy. Our results are compact, valid to all orders in the dimensional regularization parameter, and expressed in terms of pure functions.

Abstract:We discuss the double-spin asymmetries in transversely polarized Drell-Yan process, calculating all-order gluon resummation corrections up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. This resummation is relevant when the transverse-momentum Q_T of the produced lepton pair is small, and reproduces the (fixed-order) next-to-leading QCD corrections upon integrating over Q_T. The resummation corrections behave differently between pp- and p\bar{p}-collision cases and are small for the latter case at the kinematics in the proposed GSI experiments. This fact allows us to predict large value of the double-spin asymmetries at GSI, using the recent empirical information on the transversity.

Energy-scaling behavior of intrinsic transverse momentum parameters in Drell-Yan simulation

Abstract:We present an analysis based on models of the intrinsic transverse momentum of partons in nucleons by studying the dilepton transverse momentum in Drell-Yan events. Using parameter tuning in event generators and existing data from fixed-target experiments, from the Tevatron, and from the LHC, our investigation spans three orders of magnitude in center-of-mass energy and two orders of magnitude in dilepton invariant mass. The results show an energy-scaling behavior of the intrinsic transverse momentum parameters, independent of the dilepton invariant mass at a given center-of-mass energy.

Abstract:In this review we address the dynamics of relativistic heavy-ion reactions and in particular the information obtained from electromagnetic probes that stem from the partonic and hadronic phases. The out-of-equilibrium description of strongly interacting relativistic fields is based on the theory of Kadanoff and Baym. For the modeling of the partonic phase we introduce an effective dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) for QCD in equilibrium. In the DQPM, the widths and masses of the dynamical quasiparticles are controlled by transport coefficients that can be compared to the corresponding quantities from lattice QCD. The resulting off-shell transport approach is denoted by Parton–Hadron–String Dynamics (PHSD) and includes covariant dynamical transition rates for hadronization and keeps track of the hadronic interactions in the final phase. It is shown that the PHSD captures the bulk dynamics of heavy-ion collisions from lower SPS to LHC energies and thus provides a solid basis for the evaluation of the electromagnetic emissivity, which is calculated on the basis of the same dynamical parton propagators that are employed for the dynamical evolution of the partonic system. The production of direct photons in elementary processes and heavy-ion reactions is discussed and the present status of the photon v2 “puzzle”–a large elliptic flow v2 of the direct photons experimentally observed in heavy-ion collisions–is addressed for nucleus–nucleus reactions at RHIC and LHC energies. The role of hadronic and partonic sources for the photon spectra and the flow coefficients v2 and v3 is considered as well as the possibility to subtract the QGP signal from the experimental observables. Furthermore, the production of e+e− or μ+μ− pairs in elementary processes and A + A reactions is addressed. The calculations within the PHSD from SIS to LHC energies show an increase of the low mass dilepton yield essentially due to the in-medium modification of the ρ-meson and at the lowest energy also due to a multiple regeneration of Δ-resonances. Furthermore, pronounced traces of the partonic degrees-of-freedom are found in the intermediate dilepton mass regime (1.2GeV<M<3GeV) at relativistic energies, which will also shed light on the nature of the very early degrees-of-freedom in nucleus–nucleus collisions.

Abstract:We analyse polarised Drell-Yan process using the factorisation method and derive operator definitions for polarised parton distribution functions. We demonstrate that a factorisation analogous to that in the unpolarised Drell-Yan case holds in this process. We study the leading order gluonic contribution to the first moment of polarised Drell-Yan function and show that it is consistent with results obtained from polarised deep inelastic scattering.
