Abstract:Let $G$ be a Lie group, and $H\subset G$ a closed subgroup. Let $\pi$ be an irreducible unitary representation of $G$. In this paper, we briefly discuss the orbit method and its application to the branching problem $\pi|_{H}$. We use the Gan-Gross-Prasad branching law for $(G, H)= ( U(p,q), U(p, q-1) )$ as an example to illustrate the relation between $\pro_{\f u(p, q-1)}^{\f u(p,q)} \mc O(\lambda)$ and the branching law of the discrete series $D_{\lambda}|_{U(p,q-1)}$ for $\lambda$ an regular elliptic element. We also discuss some results regarding branching laws and wave front sets. The presentation of this paper does not follow the historical timeline of development.

Abstract:In this mostly expository article, we consider certain homological aspects of branching laws for representations of a group restricted to its subgroups in the context of $p$-adic groups. We follow our earlier paper, ICM 2018 proceedings, updating it with some more recent works. In particular, following Chan and Chan-Savin, see many of their papers listed in the bibliography, we have emphasized in this work that the restriction of a (generic) representation $\pi$ of a group $G$ to a closed subgroup $H$ (most of the paper is written in the context of GGP) turns out to be a projective representation on most Bernstein blocks of the category of smooth representations of $H$. Further, once $\pi|_H$ is a projective module in a particular Bernstein block, it has a simple structure.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. Let $\pi_1$ and $\pi_2$ be irreducible Arthur type representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ and $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(F)$ respectively. We study Ext branching laws when $\pi_1$ and $\pi_2$ are products of discrete series representations and their Aubert-Zelevinsky duals. We obtain an Ext analogue of the local non-tempered Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture in this case.

Abstract:Let $ H $ be a subgroup of a finite group $ G $. We say that $ H $ satisfies the $ \Pi $-property in $ G $ if for any chief factor $ L / K $ of $ G $, $ |G/K : N_{G/K}(HK/K\cap L/K )| $ is a $ \pi (HK/K\cap L/K) $-number. In this paper, we obtain some criteria for the $ p $-supersolubility or $ p $-nilpotency of a finite group and extend some known results by concerning some subgroups that satisfy the $ \Pi $-property.

Regularity and Separation for $p$-Laplace operators

Abstract:We analyze $p$-Laplace operators with degenerate elliptic coefficients. This investigation includes Grušin type $p$-Laplace operators. We describe a \emph{separation phenomenon} in elliptic and parabolic $p$-Laplace type equations, which provides an illuminating illustration of simple jump discontinuities of the corresponding weak solutions. Interestingly validity of an isoperimetric inequality for considered setting does not imply continuity of elliptic equations. On the other hand, we are able to establish global $L^1$-$L^\infty$-regularization and decay estimates of every mild solution of the parabolic Grušin type $p$-Laplace equation.

On the GL(2n) eigenvariety: branching laws, Shalika families and $p$-adic $L$-functions

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that a $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$-eigenvariety is étale over the (pure) weight space at non-critical Shalika points, and construct multi-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions varying over the resulting Shalika components. Our constructions hold in tame level 1 and Iwahori level at $p$, and give $p$-adic variation of $L$-values (of regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$ admitting Shalika models) over the whole pure weight space. In the case of $\mathrm{GL}(4)$, these results have been used by Loeffler and Zerbes to prove cases of the Bloch--Kato conjecture for $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$. Our main innovations are: (a) the introduction and systematic study of `Shalika refinements' of local representations of $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$, evaluating their attached local twisted zeta integrals; and (b) the $p$-adic interpolation of representation-theoretic branching laws for $\mathrm{GL}(n) \times \mathrm{GL}(n)$ inside $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$. Using (b), we give a construction of multi-variable $p$-adic functionals on the overconvergent cohomology groups for $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$, interpolating the zeta integrals of (a). We exploit the resulting non-vanishing of these functionals to prove our main arithmetic applications.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a finite extension of the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers. A rational map $\phi\in K(z)$ of degree at least $2$ is subhyperbolic if each critical point in the $\mathbb{C}_p$-Julia set of $\phi$ is eventually periodic. We show that subhyperbolic maps in $K(z)$ exhibit expanding property with respect to some (singular) metric. As an application, under a mild assumption, we establish several statistical laws for such maps in $K(z)$ with compact $\mathbb{C}_p$-Julia sets.

Abstract:Let p be a real number with 1<p and different from 2. We study Property (T_lp) for a second countable locally compact group G. Property (T_lp) is a weak version of Kazhdan's Property (T), defined in terms of the orthogonal representations of G on the sequence space lp. We show that Property (T_lp) for a totally disconnected group G is characterized by an isolation property of the trivial representation from the quasi-regular representations associated to open subgroups of G. Groups with Property (T_lp) share some important properties with Kazhdan groups (compact generation, compact abelianization, ...). Simple algebraic groups over non-archimedean local fields as well as automorphism groups of regular trees have Property (T_lp). In the case of discrete groups, Property (T_lp) implies Lubotzky's Property tau and is implied by Property (F) of Glasner and Monod. We show that an irreducible lattice in a product of two locally compact groups G and H have Property (T_lp), whenever G has Property (T) and H is connected and minimally almost periodic.

Abstract:Let G G be a classical group defined over a local field F F of characteristic zero. For any irreducible admissible representation π \pi of G ( F ) G(F) , which is of Casselman-Wallach type if F F is archimedean, we extend the study of spectral decomposition of local descents by Jiang and Zhang [Algebra Number Theory 12 (2018), 1489–1535] for special orthogonal groups over non-archimedean local fields to more general classical groups over any local field F F . In particular, if π \pi has a generic local L L -parameter, we introduce the spectral first occurrence index f s ( π ) {\mathfrak {f}}_{\mathfrak {s}}(\pi ) and the arithmetic first occurrence index f a ( π ) {\mathfrak {f}}_{{\mathfrak {a}}}(\pi ) of π \pi and prove in this paper that f s ( π ) = f a ( π ) {\mathfrak {f}}_{\mathfrak {s}}(\pi )={\mathfrak {f}}_{{\mathfrak {a}}}(\pi ) . Based on the theory of consecutive descents of enhanced L L -parameters developed by Jiang, Liu, and Zhang [Arithmetic wavefront sets and generic L L -packets, arXiv:2207.04700], we are able to show in this paper that the first descent spectrum consists of all discrete series representations, which determines explicitly the branching decomposition problem by means of the relevant arithmetic data and extends the main result (Jiang and Zhang [Algebra Number Theory 12 (2018), 1489–1535], Theorem 1.7) to broader generality.

The $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplacian on forms over warped products and Kleinian groups

Abstract:In this article, we generalize the set of manifolds over which the $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms depends on $p$. We will consider the case of manifolds that are warped products at infinity and certain quotients of Hyperbolic space. In the case of warped products at infinity we prove that the $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms contains a parabolic region which depends on $k$, $p$ and the limiting curvature $a_0$ at infinity. For $M=\mathbb{H}^{N+1}/\Gamma $ with $\Gamma$ a geometrically finite group such that $M$ has infinite volume and no cusps, we prove that the $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms is a exactly a parabolic region together with a set of isolated eigenvalues on the real line.

Abstract:We prove that Shimura varieties of abelian type satisfy a $p$-adic Borel-extension property over discretely valued fields. More precisely, let $\mathsf{D}$ denote the rigid-analytic closed unit disc and $\mathsf{D}^{\times} = \mathsf{D} \setminus \{0\}$, let $X$ be a smooth rigid-analytic variety, and let $S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}$ denote a Shimura variety of abelian type with torsion-free level structure. We prove every rigid-analytic map defined over a discretely valued $p$-adic field $\mathsf{D}^{\times} \times X \rightarrow S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}^{\textrm{an}}$ extends to an analytic map $\mathsf{D} \times X \rightarrow (S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}^{\textrm{BB}})^{\textrm{an}}$, where $S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}^{\textrm{BB}}$ is the Baily-Borel compactification of $S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}$. We also deduce various applications to algebraicity of analytic maps, degenerations of families of abeloids, and to $p$-adic notions of hyperbolicity. Along the way, we also prove an extension result for Rapoport-Zink spaces.

Abstract:Fix an integral semisimple element $\lambda$ in the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of a complex reductive algebraic group $G$. Let $L$ denote the centralizer of $\lambda$ in $G$ and let $\mathfrak{g}(-1)$ denote the $-1$ eigenspace of $\mathrm{ad}(\lambda)$ in $\mathfrak{g}$. Under a natural hypothesis (which is always satisfied for classical subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(n)$), we embed the closure of each $L$ orbit on $\mathfrak{g}(-1)$ into the closure of an orbit of a symmetric subgroup $K$ containing $L$ on a partial flag variety for $G$. We use this to relate the local intersection homology of the later orbit closures to the former orbit closures. This, in turn, relates multiplicity matrices for split real and $p$-adic groups. We also describe relationships between "microlocal packets'' of representations of these groups.

Abstract:For a semisimple Lie group $G$ satisfying the equal rank condition, the most basic family of unitary irreducible representations is the Discrete Series found by Harish-Chandra. In this paper, we continue our study of the branching laws for Discrete Series when restricted to a subgroup $H$ of the same type by use of integral and differential operators in combination with our previous duality principle. Many results are presented in generality, others are shown in detail for Holomorphic Discrete Series.

Abstract:We study the connection between the fundamental groups of complex hyperbolic manifolds and those of spaces arising from the (relative) strict hyperbolization process due to Charney--Davis and Davis--Januszkiewicz--Weinberger. Viewing a non-uniform lattice $\Gamma$ in $\text{PU}(n,1)$ as a relatively hyperbolic group with respect to its cusp subgroups in the usual way, we show that when $n\geq 2$, $\Gamma$ is not isomorphic to any relatively hyperbolic group arising from the relative strict hyperbolization process, via work of Lafont--Ruffoni. We also prove that a uniform lattice in $\text{PU}(n,1)$ is not the fundamental group of a Charney-Davis strict hyperbolization when $n\geq 2$, assuming the initial complex satisfies some mild conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop Terence Tao's harmonic analysis method and apply it to restricted sumsets. The well-known Cauchy–Davenport theorem asserts that if ∅≠A, B⊆Z/pZ with p a prime, then |A+B|⩾min{p,|A|+|B|−1}, where A+B={a+b:a∈A,b∈B}. In 2005, Terence Tao gave a harmonic analysis proof of the Cauchy–Davenport theorem, by applying a new form of the uncertainty principle on Fourier transform. We modify Tao's method so that it can be used to prove the following extension of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture: If A,B,S are non-empty subsets of Z/pZ with p a prime, then |{a+b:a∈A,b∈B,a−b∉S}|⩾min{p,|A|+|B|−2|S|−1}.

Abstract:A well-known result of Shalom says that lattices in SO$(n,1)$ are $L^p$ measure equivalent for all $p<n-1$. His proof actually yields the following stronger statement: the natural coupling resulting from a suitable choice of fundamental domains from a uniform lattice $\Lambda$ to a uniform one $\Gamma$ is $(L^{\infty},L^p)$. Moreover, the fundamental domain of $\Gamma$ is contained in a union of finitely many translates of the fundamental domain of $\Lambda$. The purpose of this note is to prove a converse statement. More generally, it is proved that if a ME-coupling from a non-hyperbolic group $\Lambda$ to a hyperbolic group $\Gamma$ is $(L^{\infty},L^p)$ and the fundamental domain of $\Gamma$ is contained in a union of finitely many translates of the fundamental domain of $\Lambda$, then $p$ must be less than some $p_0$ only depending on $\Gamma$.
