Abstract:We prove some structure results for transversely reducible Sasaki manifolds. In particular, we show a Sasaki manifold with positive Ricci curvature is transversely irreducible, and so join (product) construction cannot be generalized to irregular Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, as opposed to the quasi-regular case done by Wang-Ziller and Boyer-Galicki. As an application, we classify compact Sasaki manifolds with nonnegative transverse bisectional curvature, which can be viewed as the generalized Frankel conjecture in Sasaki geometry.
Covering Maps and Periodic Functions on Higher Dimensional Sierpinski Gaskets

Abstract:We construct covering maps from infinite blowups of the n-dimensional Sierpinski gasket SG(n) to certain compact fractafolds based on SG(n). These maps are fractal analogs of the usual covering maps from the line to the circle. The construction extends work of the second author in the case n = 2, but a different method of proof is needed, which amounts to solving a Sudoku-type puzzle. We can use the covering maps to define the notion of periodic function on the blowups. We give a characterization of these periodic functions and describe the analog of Fourier series expansions. We study covering maps onto quotient fractalfolds. Finally, we show that such covering maps fail to exist for many other highly symmetric fractals.

Abstract:For a branched cover between two closed orientable surfaces, the Riemann-Hurwitz formula relates the Euler characteristics of the surfaces, the total degree of the cover, and the total length of the partitions of the degree given by the local degrees at the preimages of the branching points. A very old problem asks whether a collection of partitions of an integer having the appropriate total length (that we call a candidate cover) always comes from some branched cover. The answer is known to be in the affirmative whenever the candidate base surface is not the 2-sphere, while for the 2-sphere exceptions do occur. A long-standing conjecture however asserts that when the candidate degree is a prime number, a candidate cover is always realizable. In this paper we analyze the question from the point of view of the geometry of 2-orbifolds, and we provide strong supporting evidence for the conjecture. In particular, we exhibit three different sequences of candidate covers, indexed by their degree, such that for each sequence: (1) The degrees giving realizable covers have asymptotically zero density in the naturals; (2) Each prime degree gives a realizable cover.

Abstract:We consider closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds which are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere, with branching set being a two-bridge knot (or link). We establish two-sided linear bounds depending on the order of the covering for the Matveev complexity of the covering manifold. The lower estimate uses the hyperbolic volume and results of Cao-Meyerhoff and Gueritaud-Futer (who recently improved previous work of Lackenby), while the upper estimate is based on an explicit triangulation, which also allows us to give a bound on the Delzant T-invariant of the fundamental group of the manifold.

Abstract:Let $\varphi: C\to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a degree $d$ cover of curves. In work by Castryck, Zhao and the author, we showed how one can attach to each partition $\lambda$ of $d$ a multi-set of scrollar invariants of $\lambda$ with respect to $\varphi$. We studied these invariants when $\varphi$ is simply branched, and related these new scrollar invariants to known geometric data. In this article we show how one can remove this simple branching condition, using the notion of $S_d$-closure as developed by Bhargava and Satriano. With this new framework, we are able to generalize all results from this work to arbitrary covers $C\to \mathbb{P}^1$. In particular, we obtain a syzygy-free interpretation for the splitting types of the syzygy bundles in the Casnati--Ekedahl resolution of an arbitrary cover $\varphi: C\to \mathbb{P}^1$. By using the Maroni bound, we are able to give new general bounds on these splitting types.

Abstract:The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) is designed to gather the best and deepest multiwavelength data for studying the formation and evolution of galaxies and active galactic nuclei, the distribution of dark and luminous matter at high redshift, the cosmological parameters from distant supernovae, and the extragalactic background light. The program uses the most powerful space- and ground-based telescopes to cover two fields, each 10'x16', centered on the Hubble Deep Field North and the Chandra Deep Field South, already the sites of extensive observations from X-ray through radio wavelengths. GOODS incorporates 3.6-24 micron observations from a SIRTF Legacy Program, four-band ACS imaging from an HST Treasury Program, and extensive new ground-based imaging and spectroscopy. GOODS data products will be made available on a rapid time-scale, enabling community research on a wide variety of topics. Here we describe the project, emphasizing its application for studying the mass assembly history of galaxies.

Abstract:William Thurston (1946-2012) gave a combinatorial characterization for generic branched self-coverings of the two-sphere by associating a planar graph to them <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760</a>. By generalizing the notion of local balancing, the author extends the Thurston result to encompass any branched covering of the two-sphere. As an application, we supply a lower bound for the number of equivalence classes of real rational functions for each given ramification profile. The theorem version that we prove concerns generic rational functions, assuring that if all critical points of that function are real, then we can transform it into a rational map with real coefficients by post-composition with an automorphism of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{1}$. The proof we present is constructive and founded on elementary arguments.}

Abstract:Covering schemes over an abelian group were posed recently in connection with combinatorial arrays such as covering arrays, orthogonal arrays, difference matrices, and difference schemes. This work investigates recursive constructions for covering schemes throughout basic bounds, truncation, reduction, column augmentation, Roux type constructions, and block diagonal construction. Most of the results improve upper bounds and give exact classes for covering schemes of strength 3. Numerical comparison with known upper bounds is discussed in tables for small instances.

Spreen spaces and the synthetic Kreisel-Lacombe-Shoenfield-Tseitin theorem

Abstract:I take a constructive look at Dieter Spreen's treatment of effective topological spaces and the Kreisel-Lacombe-Shoenfield-Tseitin (KLST) continuity theorem. Transferring Spreen's ideas from classical computability theory and numbered sets to a constructive setting leads to a theory of topological spaces, in fact two of them: a locale-theoretic one embodied by the notion of $\sigma$-frames, and a pointwise one that follows more closely traditional topology. Spreen's notion of effective limit passing turns out to be closely related to sobriety, while his witnesses for non-inclusion give rise to a novel separation property - any point separated from an overt subset by a semidecidable subset is already separated from it by an open one. I name spaces with this property Spreen spaces, and show that they give rise to a purely constructive continuity theorem: every map from an overt Spreen space to a pointwise regular space is pointwise continuous. The theorem is easily proved, but finding non-trivial examples of Spreen spaces is harder. I show that they are plentiful in synthetic computability theory.

Abstract:In this note we prove an effective characterization of when two finite-degree covers of a connected, orientable surface of negative Euler characteristic are isomorphic in terms of which curves have simple elevations, weakening the hypotheses to consider curves with explicitly bounded self-intersection number. As an application we show that for sufficiently large N, the set of unmarked traces associated to simple closed curves in a generically chosen representation to SL(N, R) distinguishes between pairs of non-isomorphic covers.

Abstract:We propose a conjecture regarding the integrally closedness of lattice polytopes with large lattice lengths. We demonstrate that a lattice simplex in dimension 3 (resp. 4) with lattice length of at least 2 (resp. 3 and no edge has lattice length 5) can be covered by dilated simplices of the form $sQ$, where integer $s\ge 2$ (resp. 3) and $Q$ is a lattice simplex. The covering property implies these simplices are integrally closed. As an application, we derive a simple criterion for the projective normality of ample line bundles on weighted projective spaces of dimension 3 (resp. 4). Along the way, we discover certain unexpected phenomenon.

Abstract:In this article we obtain uniform effective upper bounds for the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of homogeneous ideals inside a standard graded polynomial ring $S$ over a field. Such bounds are independent of the number of variables of $S$, in the spirit of Stillman's conjecture and of the Ananyan-Hochster's theorem, and depend on partial data extracted from the beginning or the end of the resolution. In this direction, we extend a result of McCullough from 2012 regarding a bound on regularity in terms of half the syzygies to a bound on the projective dimension and the regularity of an ideal in terms of a fraction of the syzygies.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $\psi$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

Abstract:We sketch recent interactions between model theory and a roughly 150-year old study of analytic functions involving complex analysis, algebraic topology, and number theory, centered in canonicity of universal covers. Towards this goal we discuss in a systematic and unified way several examples indicating the main ideas of the proofs and the necessary changes in method for different situations: exponential covers, modular and Shimura curves, Shimura and abelian varieties, and coherent families of smooth covers.

Abstract:Hausdorff $\Phi$-dimension is a notion of Hausdorff dimension developed using a restricted class of coverings of a set. We introduce a constructive analogue of $\Phi$-dimension using the notion of constructive $\Phi$-$s$-supergales. We prove a Point-to-Set Principle for $\Phi$-dimension, through which we get Point-to-Set Principles for Hausdorff dimension, continued-fraction dimension and dimension of Cantor coverings as special cases. We also provide a Kolmogorov complexity characterization of constructive $\Phi$-dimension. A class of covering sets $\Phi$ is said to be "faithful" to Hausdorff dimension if the $\Phi$-dimension and Hausdorff dimension coincide for every set. Similarly, $\Phi$ is said to be "faithful" to constructive dimension if the constructive $\Phi$-dimension and constructive dimension coincide for every set. Using the Point-to-Set Principle for Cantor coverings and a new technique for the construction of sequences satisfying a certain Kolmogorov complexity condition, we show that the notions of ``faithfulness'' of Cantor coverings at the Hausdorff and constructive levels are equivalent. We adapt the result by Albeverio, Ivanenko, Lebid, and Torbin to derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the constructive dimension faithfulness of the coverings generated by the Cantor series expansion, based on the terms of the expansion.

Abstract:One of the most fundamental problems in complex geometry is to determine when two bounded domains in C-n are biholomorphically equivalent. Even for complete Reinhardt domains, this fundamental problem remains unsolved completely for many years. Using the Bergmann function theory, we construct an infinite family of numerical invariants from the Bergman functions for complete Reinhardt domains in Cn. These infinite family of numerical invariants are actually a complete set of invariants if the domains are pseudoconvex with C-1 boundaries. For bounded complete Reinhardt domains with real analytic boundaries, the complete set of numerical invariants can be reduced dramatically although the set is still infinite. As a consequence, we have constructed the natural moduli spaces for these domains for the first time.
Sard properties for polynomial maps in infinite dimension

Abstract:Motivated by the Sard conjecture in sub-Riemannian geometry, and more specifically on Carnot groups, we consider the set of maps defined on a Hilbert space $H$: \[\mathscr{P}_{d}^m(H)=\bigg\{f:H\to \mathbb{R}^m\,\bigg|\, \forall\, E\subset H, \,\dim(E)<\infty \implies f|_{E} \textrm{ is a polynomial map of degree $d$}\bigg\}. \] Example of maps belonging to this class are: the map $f:\ell^2\to \mathbb{R}$ constructed by Kukpa as a counterexample for the Sard theorem in infinite dimension; the Endpoint maps of Carnot groups. We prove that, for infinite-dimensional subspaces $V \subset H$ satisfying quantitative assumptions on their Kolmogorov $n$-width, the restriction of $f$ on $V$ has the Sard property, i.e. the set of critical values of $f|_{V}$ has measure zero in $\mathbb{R}^m$. We prove various quantitative versions of this result, allowing to study the Sard property also for the case $V=H$. By constructing suitable examples, we prove the sharpness of our $n$-width assumptions. We apply these results to sub-Riemannian geometry, proving that on Carnot groups the Sard property holds true for the restriction of the Endpoint map on the set of real-analytic controls with large enough radius of convergence. This is a more functional-analytic approach to the Sard conjecture that, unlike previous ones, does not resort to reduction to finite-dimensions.

A landscape of contact manifolds via rational SFT

Abstract:We define a hierarchy functor from the exact symplectic cobordism category to a totally ordered set from a $BL_\infty$ (Bi-Lie) formalism of the rational symplectic field theory (RSFT). The hierarchy functor consists of three levels of structures, namely algebraic planar torsion, order of semi-dilation and planarity, all taking values in $\mathbb{N}\cup \{\infty\}$, where algebraic planar torsion can be understood as the analogue of Latschev-Wendl's algebraic torsion in the context of RSFT. The hierarchy functor is well-defined through a partial construction of RSFT and is within the scope of established virtual techniques. We develop computation tools for those functors and prove all three of them are surjective. In particular, the planarity functor is surjective in all dimension $\ge 3$. Then we use the hierarchy functor to study the existence of exact cobordisms. We discuss examples including iterated planar open books, spinal open books, affine varieties with uniruled compactification and links of singularities.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to provide an expository description of a result of Carrasco Piaggio connecting the Ahlfors regular conformal dimension of a compact uniformly perfect doubling metric space with the combinatorial $p$-moduli of the metric space. We give detailed construction of a metric associated with the $p$-modulus of the space when the $p$-modulus is zero, so that the constructed metric is in the Ahlfors regular conformal gauge of the metric space. To do so, we utilize the tools of hyperbolic filling, developed first by Gromov and by Bourdon and Pajot.

Abstract:We prove irreducibility for the space of cyclic covers of fixed numerical type between smooth projective curves, and also for the space of cyclic covers of prime order and of fixed numerical-combinatorial type between moduli-stable projective curves. As an application we describe the irreducible components of the singular locus of the compactified moduli space of curves $\bar{\mahfrak M_g}$, extending the work of Cornalba, who described the irreducible components of the singular locus of the moduli space of curves $\mahfrak M_g}$.
