Abstract:COSINE-100 aims to conclusively test the claimed dark matter annual modulation signal detected by DAMA/LIBRA collaboration. DAMA/LIBRA has released updated analysis results by lowering the energy threshold to 0.75 keV through various upgrades. They have consistently claimed to have observed the annual modulation. In COSINE-100, it is crucial to lower the energy threshold for a direct comparison with DAMA/LIBRA, which also enhances the sensitivity of the search for low-mass dark matter, enabling COSINE-100 to explore this area. Therefore, it is essential to have a precise and quantitative understanding of the background spectrum across all energy ranges. This study expands the background modeling from 0.7 to 4000 keV using 2.82 years of COSINE-100 data. The modeling has been improved to describe the background spectrum across all energy ranges accurately. Assessments of the background spectrum are presented, considering the nonproportionality of NaI(Tl) crystals at both low and high energies and the characteristic X-rays produced by the interaction of external backgrounds with materials such as copper. Additionally, constraints on the fit parameters obtained from the alpha spectrum modeling fit are integrated into this model. These improvements are detailed in the paper.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the accuracy of background modeling in the COSINE - 100 experiment for dark matter detection, especially to describe the background spectrum more accurately in the low - energy region. Specifically, the research aims to directly test the annual modulation signal of dark matter claimed by the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration by improving the background model and to lower the energy threshold to enhance the detection sensitivity to low - mass dark matter. ### Research Background and Motivation The DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has observed the annual modulation phenomenon of dark matter using a NaI(Tl) crystal array and lowered the energy threshold to 0.75 keV in the updated analysis in 2024, continuously reporting consistent results. However, these results conflict with the null results of other experiments under the standard dark matter halo model. To verify the findings of DAMA/LIBRA, the COSINE - 100 experiment needs to lower its energy threshold below 1 keV and ensure that the background level is comparable to that of DAMA/LIBRA when the energy in the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) Region of Interest (ROI) is below 6 keV. ### Main Research Contents 1. **Expanding the Background Model**: - Using 2.82 years of COSINE - 100 data, expand the background model to the energy range of 0.7 to 4000 keV. - Improve the background model to accurately describe the background spectrum across the entire energy range. 2. **Non - Proportionality Correction**: - Consider the non - proportionality of NaI(Tl) crystals in the low - energy and high - energy regions and adjust the energy response in Monte Carlo simulations. - Establish a non - proportionality calibration curve through the measurement of internal gamma peaks and apply it to the simulated background spectrum. 3. **X - ray Contribution**: - Study the characteristic X - rays generated by the interaction of external backgrounds with materials such as copper, which make important contributions to the background in the low - energy region. 4. **Alpha Spectrum Modeling**: - Integrate the constraints obtained from alpha - spectrum fitting to improve the current background model. 5. **Multi - Layer Perceptron (MLP) Network**: - Implement a multi - layer perceptron network based on the Noise - Separated Pulse - Shape Discrimination (PSD) parameter to achieve a threshold of 0.7 keV, keep the event selection efficiency at 20%, and control the noise contamination below 1%. ### Conclusion Through the above improvements, the COSINE - 100 experiment can describe the background spectrum more precisely, especially in the low - energy region. This not only helps to directly test the annual modulation signal of DAMA/LIBRA but also enhances the detection sensitivity to low - mass dark matter. Ultimately, this research provides a more reliable background model basis for future dark matter detection. ### Formula Example When discussing non - proportionality correction, the paper mentions: \[ \text{Charge Asymmetry}=\frac{Q_1 - Q_2}{Q_1 + Q_2} \] where \(Q_1\) and \(Q_2\) are the amounts of electric charge measured by two photomultiplier tubes (PMT) connected to the crystal respectively. This formula is used to evaluate the charge asymmetry between single - hit events and multi - hit events, thereby improving the accuracy of the background model.
