Abstract:The process of electron-positron pair creation through multi-photon absorption in a space-time dependent electric field is analyzed using computational quantum field theory. Our findings reveal two distinct pair creation channels: the symmetric and asymmetric transition channels. We propose that the asymmetric transition channel arises from the inherent spatial inhomogeneity of intense laser pulses. By mapping the field-theoretical model of laser-assisted multi-photon pair creation onto a quantum-mechanical time-dependent framework, a semi-analytical solution that captures the asymmetric transition signatures of vacuum decay is derived. Additionally, it is demonstrated that neglecting spatial inhomogeneity leads to erroneous transition amplitudes and incorrect identification of pair creation channels, even when the dipole approximation holds.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to study the process of electron-positron pair production through multiphoton absorption in a spatiotemporally inhomogeneous electric field. Specifically, the paper explores two different production channels: symmetric and asymmetric transition channels. The authors propose that the asymmetric transition channel is induced by the spatial inhomogeneity of a strong laser pulse. By mapping the field-theoretical model of the laser-assisted multiphoton pair production process onto the time-dependent framework of quantum mechanics, a semi-analytical solution is obtained that captures the asymmetric transition characteristics of vacuum decay. Furthermore, the paper points out that neglecting spatial inhomogeneity leads to incorrect transition amplitudes and erroneous identification of production channels, even if the dipole approximation still holds. Through numerical simulations and theoretical analysis, the paper demonstrates how the spatial width of the inhomogeneous electric field affects the asymmetric transition paths. It is found that when the spatial width of the electric field becomes infinitely large, the asymmetric transition paths disappear, while the symmetric transition paths are enhanced. This indicates that spatial inhomogeneity has a significant impact on the electron-positron pair production process.
