Abstract:In the information era, how learners find, evaluate, and effectively use information has become a challenging issue, especially with the added complexity of large language models (LLMs) that have further confused learners in their information retrieval and search activities. This study attempts to unpack this complexity by combining exploratory search strategies with the theories of exploratory learning to form a new theoretical model of exploratory learning from the perspective of students' learning. Our work adapts Kolb's learning model by incorporating high-frequency exploration and feedback loops, aiming to promote deep cognitive and higher-order cognitive skill development in students. Additionally, this paper discusses and suggests how advanced LLMs integrated into information retrieval and information theory can support students in their exploratory searches, contributing theoretically to promoting student-computer interaction and supporting their learning journeys in the new era with LLMs.

### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve
In the information age, finding, evaluating, and effectively utilizing information has become a challenge, especially with the emergence of large language models (LLMs) making information retrieval and search activities more complex. This paper aims to enhance exploratory learning from the students' perspective by combining exploratory search strategies with exploratory learning theory to form a new theoretical model. Specifically, this paper attempts to address the following issues:
1. **Students' insufficient information retrieval skills in the age of information explosion**:
- With the development of information technology, students have access to more learning resources than ever before, but how to effectively find, evaluate, and utilize this information has become a problem.
- Students face various issues during exploratory searches, such as blindly trusting search results, cognitive biases in information evaluation, and difficulties in appropriately applying strategies in specific search scenarios.
2. **The disconnection between traditional exploratory learning theory and the modern technological environment**:
- Traditional exploratory learning theory often relies on goal-oriented or divergent learning processes, involving less non-linear iteration and adjustment.
- In the modern technological environment, exploratory search strategies require students to conduct complex, non-goal-oriented searches and provide feedback between information retrieval systems, re-entering internal exploratory loops.
3. **How to utilize advanced LLMs to enhance students' exploratory search capabilities**:
- Large language models have significantly improved capabilities in semantic understanding and information processing, better understanding users' search intentions, extracting relevant and valuable content, thereby improving the efficiency and effectiveness of exploratory searches.
- How to integrate these advanced LLMs into information retrieval and information theory to support students' exploratory searches, promote interaction between students and computers, and support their learning journey in the new era.
4. **How to cultivate students' higher-order cognitive skills**:
- Exploratory search plays an important role in developing higher-order cognitive skills (such as creativity, evaluation, and analytical abilities).
- Through high-frequency exploration and reflection processes, students can continuously acquire and process new information, connect new information with existing knowledge, and form deeper understanding.
In summary, this paper aims to propose a new approach by combining exploratory search strategies and exploratory learning theory to fundamentally enhance students' exploratory search capabilities, adapt to the ever-changing technological environment, and cultivate their higher-order cognitive skills.
