Abstract:A material showing a sequence of three ferroelectric liquid crystalline phases below the paraelectric nematic phase has been synthesized and studied. The polar order of molecules appearing due to the dipole-dipole interactions in the NF phase is preserved also in the smectic phases: orthogonal SmAF and tilted SmCF. The ferroelectric ground state of both smectic phases is confirmed by their second harmonic generation activity and polarization switching. In the SmCF phase the polarization becomes oriented to the electric field by decreasing the tilt angle to zero. Although both smectic phases are ferroelectric in nature, their dielectric response is found to be very different.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore and synthesize a new type of material, which can exhibit a series of liquid - crystal phases with ferroelectric properties, specifically including an orthogonal nematic phase (N F), an orthogonal smectic phase (SmA F) and a tilted smectic phase (SmC F). These phases are characterized by appearing sequentially at low temperatures, and in these phases, the polar order of molecules (caused by dipole - dipole interactions) is maintained, which is relatively rare in previous studies. The authors experimentally studied the physical properties of these phases, especially their ferroelectric characteristics and dielectric responses, in order to reveal the transition mechanisms between these phases and their potential application values. The key findings in the paper include: 1. **Maintenance of ferroelectric properties**: During the transition from the nematic phase to the smectic phase, the ferroelectric properties are maintained, which is confirmed by second - harmonic generation (SHG) activity and polarization - switching experiments. 2. **Differences in dielectric responses of different phases**: Although both smectic phases have ferroelectric properties, their dielectric responses are very different. In the orthogonal SmA F phase, polar fluctuations are strongly suppressed; while in the tilted SmC F phase, due to the collective rotation of molecules on the tilted cone, a strong dielectric response is generated. 3. **Nature of phase transitions**: The phase transition from N F to SmA F is a weak first - order phase transition, and the phase transition from SmA F to SmC F is a second - order phase transition. These findings not only provide new insights into understanding the microstructure and properties of ferroelectric liquid - crystal materials, but also provide a theoretical basis and technical support for the development of new multi - functional materials.
