Abstract:We propose some generalizations of the classical Division Algorithm for polynomials over coefficient rings (possibly non-commutative). These results provide a generalization of the Remainder Theorem that allows calculating the remainder without using the long division method, even if the divisor has degree greater than one. As a consequence we obtain an extension of the classical Factor Theorem that provides a general divisibility criterion for polynomials. Finally, we will refer to some applications of these results for evaluating and dividing on skew polynomial rings. The arguments can be used in basic algebra courses and are suitable for building classroom/homework activities.

Abstract:Publicly verifiable secret sharing schemes based on Lagrange interpolation utilize public cryptography to encrypt transmitted data and the validity of their shares can be verified by everyone, not only the participants. However, they require O(klog2k) operations during secret reconstruction phase. In order to reduce the computational complexity during the secret reconstruction phase we propose a non-interactive publicly verifiable secret sharing scheme based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem utilizing ElGamal cryptosystem to encrypt data, whonly requires O(k) operations during secret reconstruction phase. Theoretical analysis proves the proposed scheme achieves computation security and is more efficient.

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.

Abstract:Considering $\mathbb{Z}_n$ the ring of integers modulo $n$, the classical Fermat-Euler theorem establishes the existence of a specific natural number $\varphi(n)$ satisfying the following property: $ x^{\varphi(n)}=1%\hspace{1.0cm}\text{for all}\hspace{0.2cm}x\in \mathbb{Z}_n^*, $ for all $x$ belonging to the group of units of $\mathbb{Z}_n$. In this manuscript, this result is extended to a class of rings that satisfies some mild conditions.

Abstract:A well-known generalisation of positional numeration systems is the case where the base is the residue class of $x$ modulo a given polynomial $f(x)$ with coefficients in (for example) the integers, and where we try to construct finite expansions for all residue classes modulo $f(x)$, using a suitably chosen digit set. We give precise conditions under which direct or fibred products of two such polynomial number systems are again of the same form. The main tool is a general form of the Chinese Remainder Theorem. We give applications to simultaneous number systems in the integers.

Abstract:We obtain a bounded generation theorem over $\mathcal O/\mathfrak a$, where $\mathcal O$ is the ring of integers of a number field and $\mathfrak a$ a general ideal of $\mathcal O$. This addresses a conjecture of Salehi-Golsefidy. Along the way, we obtain nontrivial bounds for additive character sums over $\mathcal O/\mathcal P^n$ for a prime ideal $\mathcal P$ with the aid of certain sum-product estimates.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish an explicit higher reciprocity law for the polynomial ring over a nonprincipal ultraproduct of finite fields. Such an ultraproduct can be taken over the same finite field, which allows to recover the classical higher reciprocity law for the polynomial ring Fq[t] over a finite field Fq that is due to Dedekind, Kühne, Artin, and Schmidt. On the other hand, when the ultraproduct is taken over finite fields of unbounded cardinalities, we obtain an explicit higher reciprocity law for the polynomial ring over an infinite field in both characteristics 0 and p>0 for some prime p . We then use the higher reciprocity law to prove an analogue of the Grunwald–Wang theorem for such a polynomial ring in both characteristics 0 and p>0 for some prime p .

An application of Birch-Tate formula to tame kernels of real quadratic number fields

Abstract:Let $F$ be a real quadratic number field with discriminant $D$ and $\mathcal{O}_F$ the ring of integers in $F$. Let $\chi_F$ be the Dirichlet character associated to $F/\mathbb{Q}$. Write $L(\chi_F,s)$ for the Dirichlet L-function of $\chi_F$. By an induction argument for imprimitive Dirichlet L-values, we get several $2$-divisibility results on $L(\chi_F,-1)$ when $D$ has arbitrarily finitely many prime divisors. As an application, by making use of the Birch-Tate formula for $F$, we determine the $2$-primary part for the second $K$ group $K_2\mathcal{O}_F$. We also give a new proof for an old theorem of Browkin and Schinzel.

Abstract:In this paper we establish some new results similar to Lagrange's four-square theorem. For example, we prove that any integer $n>1$ can be written $w(5w+1)/2+x(5x+1)/2+y(5y+1)/2+z(5z+1)/2$ with $w,x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$. Here we state two general results: (1) If $a$ and $b$ are odd integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$\frac{w(aw+b)}2+\frac{x(ax+b)}2+\frac{y(ay+b)}2+\frac{z(az+b)}2$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers. (2) If $a$ and $b$ are integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$, $2\mid a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$w(aw+b)+x(ax+b)+y(ay+b)+z(az+b)$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers.

Abstract:In this article, we present streamlined proofs of results of Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla concerning the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ for primes $p\equiv 1 \bmod{4}$ while providing a generalization of their conjecture. Using our generalization, we relate Fermat quotients of quadratic non-residues $\bmod{p}$ to sums of harmonic numbers.

Abstract:This paper is motivated by the quest of a non-group irreducible finite index depth 2 maximal subfactor. We compute the generic fusion rules of the Grothendieck ring of Rep(PSL(2,q)), q prime-power, by applying a Verlinde-like formula on the generic character table. We then prove that this family of fusion rings R_q interpolates to all integers q>=2, providing (when q is not prime-power) the first example of infinite family of non group-like simple integral fusion rings. Furthermore, they pass all the known criteria of (unitary) categorification. This provides infinitely many serious candidates for solving the famous open problem of whether there exists an integral fusion category which is not weakly group-theoretical. We prove that a complex categorification (if any) of an interpolated fusion ring R_q (with q non prime-power) cannot be braided, and so its Drinfeld center must be simple. In general, this paper proves that a non-pointed simple fusion category is non-braided if and only if its Drinfeld center is simple; and also that every simple integral fusion category is weakly group-theoretical if and only if every simple integral modular fusion category is pointed.
The complexity of the Chinese Remainder Theorem

Abstract:The Chinese Remainder Theorem for the integers says that every system of congruence equations is solvable as long as the system satisfies an obvious necessary condition. This statement can be generalized in a natural way to arbitrary algebraic structures using the language of Universal Algebra. In this context, an algebra is a structure of a first-order language with no relation symbols, and a congruence on an algebra is an equivalence relation on its base set compatible with its fundamental operations. A tuple of congruences of an algebra is called a Chinese Remainder tuple if every system involving them is solvable. In this article we study the complexity of deciding whether a tuple of congruences of a finite algebra is a Chinese Remainder tuple. This problem, which we denote CRT, is easily seen to lie in coNP. We prove that it is actually coNP-complete and also show that it is tractable when restricted to several well-known classes of algebras, such as vector spaces and distributive lattices. The polynomial algorithms we exhibit are made possible by purely algebraic characterizations of Chinese Remainder tuples for algebras in these classes, which constitute interesting results in their own right. Among these, an elegant characterization of Chinese Remainder tuples of finite distributive lattices stands out. Finally, we address the restriction of CRT to an arbitrary equational class $\mathcal{V}$ generated by a two-element algebra. Here we establish an (almost) dichotomy by showing that, unless $\mathcal{V}$ is the class of semilattices, the problem is either coNP-complete or tractable.

Abstract:A generalized Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) for multiple integers from residue sets has been studied recently, where the correspondence between the remainders and the integers in each residue set modulo several moduli is not known. A robust CRT has also been proposed lately to robustly reconstruct a single integer from its erroneous remainders. In this paper, we consider the reconstruction problem of two integers from their residue sets, where the remainders not only are out of order but also may have errors. We prove that two integers can be robustly reconstructed if their remainder errors are less than $M/8$ , where $M$ is the greatest common divisor of all the moduli. We also propose an efficient reconstruction algorithm. Finally, we present some simulations to verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. This paper is motivated from and has applications in the determination of multiple frequencies from multiple undersampled waveforms.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to find more Karatsuba-like formulae for a fixed set of moduli polynomials in GF(2)[x]. To this end, a theoretical framework is established. The authors first generalise the division algorithm, and then present a generalised definition of the remainder of integer division. Finally, a generalised Chinese remainder theorem is used to achieve their initial goal. As a by-product of the generalised remainder of integer division, the authors rediscover Montgomery's N-residue and present a systematic interpretation of definitions of Montgomery's multiplication and addition operations.

Abstract:In this short note, we closely follow the approach of Green and Tao to extend the best known bound for recurrence modulo 1 from squares to the largest possible class of polynomials. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of a consequence of this result for polynomials structures in sumsets and limitations of the method.

Abstract:We produce a new proof of the reciprocity law for the twisted second moment of Dirichlet L-functions that was recently proved by Conrey. Our method is to analyze certain two-variable sums where the variables satisfy a linear congruence. We show that these sums satisfy an elegant reciprocity formula. In the case that the modulus is prime, these sums are closely related to the twisted second moment, and the reciprocity formula for these sums implies Conrey's reciprocity formula. We also extend the range of uniformity of Conrey's formula.
