Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate a new regime of the formation of ultrashort optical solitons in spherical silica microresonators with whispering gallery this http URL solitons are driven by a coherent CW pump at the frequency in the range of normal dispersion, and the energy is transferred from this pump to the solitons via two channels: Raman amplification and the inverse Cherenkov effect. We discuss three different regimes of soliton propagation and we also show that these Raman solitons can be controlled by weak coherent CW signals.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore a new mechanism for the formation of ultrashort Raman solitons in quartz microsphere resonators, especially the role of the inverse Cherenkov effect in this process. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the paper reveals the behavior of Raman solitons at different pump frequencies and discusses the existence and characteristics of synchronous (phase - locked to the pump) and asynchronous (phase not locked to the pump) Raman solitons. ### Specific Problems and Methods 1. **Research Background**: - Microcombs have wide applications in fields such as spectroscopy, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, astronomy, and distance measurement. - Raman solitons are solitons supported by Raman gain and are usually observed in fiber cavities and quartz micro - resonators of different shapes. - The formation mechanism of Raman solitons involves the compensation of anomalous dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity, as well as the compensation of Raman gain for loss. 2. **Research Objectives**: - Reveal the importance of the inverse Cherenkov effect in the formation of Raman solitons. - Study the synchronous and asynchronous states of Raman solitons at different pump frequencies. 3. **Research Methods**: - Use the Lugiato - Lefever equation (LLE) to describe the dynamics of light in microsphere resonators. - Through numerical simulation, change the frequency of the continuous - wave (CW) pump and observe the formation and characteristics of Raman solitons under different conditions. - Analyze the frequency spectrum of Raman solitons, especially the influence of Cherenkov radiation and four - wave mixing (FWM). ### Main Findings 1. **Synchronous and Asynchronous Raman Solitons**: - Synchronous Raman solitons obtain energy from the pump through Raman gain and the inverse Cherenkov effect, and their phases are locked to the pump phase. - The phase of asynchronous Raman solitons is not locked to the pump phase, and their energy is mainly obtained through Raman gain. 2. **Cherenkov Effect**: - Cherenkov radiation occurs when the soliton velocity is equal to the phase velocity of the linear wave. - When the Cherenkov resonance frequency coincides with the pump frequency, the soliton will be phase - locked to the pump, forming a synchronous Raman soliton. 3. **Control Methods**: - The phase of synchronous Raman solitons can be effectively controlled by a weak continuous - wave signal. ### Conclusion The paper shows that in quartz microsphere resonators, synchronous and asynchronous Raman solitons can be formed through the inverse Cherenkov effect and Raman gain. The phase of synchronous Raman solitons is locked to the pump phase, which provides a new way to improve the frequency comb parameters generated by micro - resonators. These findings are of great significance for the study of soliton dynamics and practical applications.
