Abstract:The dominating graph of a graph G is a graph whose vertices correspond to the dominating sets of G and two vertices are adjacent whenever their corresponding dominating sets differ in exactly one vertex. Studying properties of dominating graph has become an increasingly interesting subject in domination theory. On the other hand, median graphs and partial cubes are two fundamental graph classes in graph theory. In this paper, we make some new connections between domination theory and the theory of median graphs and partial cubes. As the main result, we show that the following conditions are equivalent for every graph with no isolated vertex, and in particular, that the simple third condition completely characterizes first two ones in which three concepts of dominating graphs, median graphs and complement of minimal dominating sets get related:

Abstract:Abstract In graph G G , a vertex dominates itself and its neighbors. A subset S ⊆ V ( G ) S\subseteq V\left(G) is said to be a double-dominating set of G G if S S dominates every vertex of G G at least twice. The double domination number γ × 2 ( G ) {\gamma }_{\times 2}\left(G) is the minimum cardinality of a double dominating set of G G . We show that if G G is a maximal outerplanar graph on n ≥ 3 n\ge 3 vertices, then γ × 2 ( G ) ≤ 2 n 3 {\gamma }_{\times 2}\left(G)\le ⌊\frac{2n}{3}⌋ . Further, if n ≥ 4 n\ge 4 , then γ × 2 ( G ) ≤ min n + t 2 , n − t {\gamma }_{\times 2}\left(G)\le \min \left\{⌊\frac{n+t}{2}⌋,n-t\right\} , where t t is the number of vertices of degree 2 in G G . These bounds are shown to be tight. In addition, we also study the case that G G is a striped maximal outerplanar graph.

Abstract:Nine variations of the concept of domination in a simple graph are identified as fundamental domination concepts, and a unified approach is introduced for studying them. For each variation, the minimum cardinality of a subset of dominating elements is the corresponding fundamental domination number. It is observed that, for each nontrivial connected graph, at most five of these nine numbers can be different, and inequalities between these five numbers are given. Finally, these fundamental dominations are interpreted in terms of the total graph of the given graph, a concept introduced by the second author in 1965. It is argued that the very first domination concept, defined by O. Ore in 1962 and under a different name by C. Berge in 1958, deserves to be called the most fundamental of graph dominations.

Abstract:The Roman domination in graphs is well-studied in graph theory. The topic is related to a defensive strategy problem in which the Roman legions are settled in some secure cities of the Roman Empire. The deployment of the legions around the Empire is designed in such a way that a sudden attack to any undefended city could be quelled by a legion from a strong neighbour. There is an additional condition: no legion can move if doing so leaves its base city defenceless. In this manuscript we start the study of a variant of Roman domination in graphs: the triple Roman domination. We consider that any city of the Roman Empire must be able to be defended by at least three legions. These legions should be either in the attacked city or in one of its neighbours. We determine various bounds on the triple Roman domination number for general graphs, and we give exact values for some graph families. Moreover, complexity results are also obtained.

Abstract:A quasi total double Roman dominating function (QTDRD-function) on a graph G=(V(G),E(G)) is a function f:V(G)→{0,1,2,3} having the property that (i) if f ( v ) = 0, then vertex v must have at least two neighbors assigned 2 under f or one neighbor w with f ( w ) = 3; (ii) if f ( v ) = 1, then vertex v has at least one neighbor w with f(w)≥2 , and (iii) if x is an isolated vertex in the subgraph induced by the set of vertices assigned nonzero values, then f ( x ) = 2. The weight of a QTDRD-function f is the sum of its function values over the whole vertices, and the quasi total double Roman domination number γqtdR(G) equals the minimum weight of a QTDRD-function on G . In this paper, we first show that the problem of computing the quasi total double Roman domination number of a graph is NP-hard, and then we characterize graphs G with small or large γqtdR(G) . Moreover, we establish an upper bound on the quasi total double Roman domination number and we characterize the connected graphs attaining this bound.

Abstract:Let G=V,E be a simple graph. A subset D⊆V is a dominating set if every vertex not in D is adjacent to a vertex in D . The domination number of G , denoted by γG , is the smallest cardinality of a dominating set of G . The domination subdivision number sdγG of G is the minimum number of edges that must be subdivided (each edge can be subdivided at most once) in order to increase the domination number. In 2000, Haynes et al. showed that sdγG≤dGv+dGv−1 for any edge uv∈EG with dGu≥2 and dGv≥2 where G is a connected graph with order no less than 3. In this paper, we improve the above bound to sdγG≤dGu+dGv−NGu∩NGv−1 , and furthermore, we show the decision problem for determining whether sdγG=1 is NP-hard. Moreover, we show some bounds or exact values for domination subdivision numbers of some graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the total outer-connected domination number of the middle graph of a simple graph and we obtain tight bounds for this number in terms of the order of the middle graph. We also compute the total outer-connected domination number of some families of graphs, explicitly. Moreover, some Nordhaus-Gaddum-like relations are presented for the total outer-connected domination number of middle graphs.

Abstract:This paper introduces the concept of proper 2-dominating sets in graphs, providing a comprehensive characterisation of graphs that possess such sets. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a graph to have a proper 2-dominating set. Graphs with proper dominating sets can have a symmetric structure. Moreover, we estimate the bounds of the proper 2-domination number in the graphs with respect to the 2-domination and 3-domination numbers. We show that the cardinality of γ2 ̄-set is greater by one at most than the cardinality of γ2-set.

Abstract:The dominating set problem (DSP) is one of the most famous problems in combinatorial optimization. It is defined as follows. For a given graph G=(V,E) , a dominating set of G is a subset S⊆V such that every vertex in V∖S is adjacent to at least one vertex in S . Furthermore, the DSP is the problem of finding a minimum-size dominating set and the corresponding minimum size, the domination number of G . In this, work we investigate a variant of the DSP, the super dominating set problem (SDSP), which has attracted much attention during the last years. A dominating set S is called a super dominating set of G , if for every vertex u∈S ̄=V∖S , there exists a v∈S such that N(v)∩S ̄=N(v)∖S={u} . Analogously, the SDSP is to find a minimum-size super dominating set, and the corresponding minimum size, the super domination number of G . The decision variants of both the DSP and the SDSP have been shown to be NP -hard. In this paper, we present tight bounds for the super domination number of the neighbourhood corona product, r -clique sum, and the Hajós sum of two graphs. Additionally, we present infinite families of graphs attaining our bounds. Finally, we give the exact number of minimum size super dominating sets for some graph classes. In particular, the number of super dominating sets for cycles has quite surprising properties as it varies between values of the set {4,n,2n,5n2−10n8} based on nmod4 .

Abstract:A maximal double Roman dominating function (MDRDF) on a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,2,3\}$ such that \textrm{(i) }every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=0$ is adjacent to least two vertices { assigned $2$ or to at least one vertex assigned $3,$} \textrm{(ii) }every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=1$ is adjacent to at least one { vertex assigned $2$ or $3$} and \textrm{(iii) }the set $\{w\in V|~f(w)=0\}$ is not a dominating set of $G $. The weight of a MDRDF is the sum of its function values over all vertices, and the maximal double Roman domination number $\gamma _{dR}^{m}(G) $ is the minimum weight of an MDRDF on $G$. {In this paper, we initiate the study of maximal double Roman domination. We first show that the problem of determining }$\gamma _{dR}^{m}(G)$ {is NP-complete for bipartite, chordal and planar graphs. But it is solvable in linear time for bounded clique-width graphs including trees, cographs and distance-hereditary graphs. Moreover, we establish various relationships relating }$\gamma _{dR}^{m}(G)$ to some domination parameters. {For the class of trees, we show that for every tree }$T$ {of order }$n\geq 4,$ $\gamma _{dR}^{m}(T)\leq \frac{5}{4}n$ {and we characterize all trees attaining the bound. Finally, the exact values of }$\gamma _{dR}^{m}(G) $ {are given for paths and cycles.

A subset [math] of [math] is a dominating set of [math] if every vertex in [math] is adjacent to at least one vertex of [math]. The domination polynomial of [math] is the polynomial [math], where [math] is the number of dominating sets of [math] of size [math], and [math] is the size of a smallest dominating set of [math], called the domination number of [math]. Motivated by a conjecture in [S. Alikhani and Y. H. Peng, Introduction to domination polynomial of a graph, ARS Combin. 114 (2014) 257–266] which states that the domination polynomial of any graph is unimodal, we obtain sufficient conditions for this conjecture to hold. Also we study the unimodality of graph [math] with [math], where [math] is an integer.
Fine-Grained Complexity of Multiple Domination and Dominating Patterns in Sparse Graphs

Abstract:The study of domination in graphs has led to a variety of domination problems studied in the literature. Most of these follow the following general framework: Given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, decide if there is a set $S$ of $k$ vertices such that (1) some inner property $\phi(S)$ (e.g., connectedness) is satisfied, and (2) each vertex $v$ satisfies some domination property $\rho(S, v)$ (e.g., there is an $s\in S$ that is adjacent to $v$). Since many real-world graphs are sparse, we seek to determine the optimal running time of such problems in both the number $n$ of vertices and the number $m$ of edges in $G$. While the classic dominating set problem admits a rather limited improvement in sparse graphs (Fischer, Künnemann, Redzic SODA'24), we show that natural variants studied in the literature admit much larger speed-ups, with a diverse set of possible running times. Specifically, we obtain conditionally optimal algorithms for: 1) $r$-Multiple $k$-Dominating Set (each vertex must be adjacent to at least $r$ vertices in $S$): If $r\le k-2$, we obtain a running time of $(m/n)^{r} n^{k-r+o(1)}$ that is conditionally optimal assuming the 3-uniform hyperclique hypothesis. In sparse graphs, this fully interpolates between $n^{k-1\pm o(1)}$ and $n^{2\pm o(1)}$, depending on $r$. Curiously, when $r=k-1$, we obtain a randomized algorithm beating $(m/n)^{k-1} n^{1+o(1)}$ and we show that this algorithm is close to optimal under the $k$-clique hypothesis. 2) $H$-Dominating Set ($S$ must induce a pattern $H$). We conditionally settle the complexity of three such problems: (a) Dominating Clique ($H$ is a $k$-clique), (b) Maximal Independent Set of size $k$ ($H$ is an independent set on $k$ vertices), (c) Dominating Induced Matching ($H$ is a perfect matching on $k$ vertices).

The 1/3-conjectures for domination in cubic graphs

Abstract:A set S of vertices in a graph G is a dominating set of G if every vertex not in S is adjacent to a vertex in S . The domination number of G, denoted by $\gamma$(G), is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set in G. In a breakthrough paper in 2008, L{ö}wenstein and Rautenbach proved that if G is a cubic graph of order n and girth at least 83, then $\gamma$(G) $\le$ n/3. A natural question is if this girth condition can be lowered. The question gave birth to two 1/3-conjectures for domination in cubic graphs. The first conjecture, posed by Verstraete in 2010, states that if G is a cubic graph on n vertices with girth at least 6, then $\gamma$(G) $\le$ n/3. The second conjecture, first posed as a question by Kostochka in 2009, states that if G is a cubic, bipartite graph of order n, then $\gamma$(G) $\le$n/3. In this paper, we prove Verstraete's conjecture when there is no 7-cycle and no 8-cycle, and we prove the Kostochka's related conjecture for bipartite graphs when there is no 4-cycle and no 8-cycle.

Abstract:A double Roman dominating function (DRDF) on a graph is a function having the property that if , then vertex v must have at least two neighbors assigned 2 under f or one neighbor w with , and if , then vertex v must have at least one neighbor w with . The weight of a DRDF is the sum of its function values over all vertices, and the double Roman domination number is the minimum weight of a DRDF on G . Khoeilar et al. (Discrete Appl. Math. 270:159–167, 2019) proved that if G is a connected graph of order n with minimum degree two different from and , then Moreover, they presented an infinite family of graphs attaining the upper bound, and conjectured that is the only family of extremal graphs reaching the bound. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture by characterizing all extremal graphs for this bound.

Abstract:Given a graph G on n vertices, a subset of vertices U⊆V(G) is dominating if every vertex of V(G) is either in U or adjacent to a vertex of U . The domination polynomial of G is the generating function whose coefficients are the number of dominating sets of a given size. In 2014, Alikhani and Peng conjectured that the domination polynomial is unimodal, i.e., its coefficients are non-decreasing and then non-increasing. We prove unimodality for spider graphs with at most 400 legs (of arbitrary length), lollipop graphs, arbitrary direct products of complete graphs, and Cartesian products of two complete graphs. We show that for every graph, a portion of the coefficients are non-increasing, and, for certain graphs with low upper domination number, this is sufficient to prove unimodality. Furthermore, we show that for graphs with m universal vertices , i.e., vertices of degree n−1 , the last 2−m−1(2m−1)n coefficients of their domination polynomial are non-increasing.

Abstract:Domination is a structural complexity of chemical molecular graphs. A dominating set in a (molecular) graph G=V,E is a subset S⊆V such that each vertex in V\S is adjacent to at least one vertex in S. The domination number γG of a graph G is the minimum size of a dominating set in G. In this paper, computer-aided approaches for obtaining bounds for domination number on torus graphs are here considered, and many new exact values and bounds are obtained.

Abstract:A non-empty set $S\subseteq V (G)$ of the simple graph $G=(V(G),E(G))$ is an independent dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent with some vertex in $S$ and the vertices of $S$ are pairwise non-adjacent. The independent domination number of $G$, denoted by $\gamma_i(G)$, is the minimum size of all independent dominating sets of $G$. The independent domination stability, or simply $id$-stability of $G$ is the minimum number of vertices whose removal changes the independent domination number of $G$. In this paper, we investigate properties of independent domination stability in graphs. In particular, we obtain several bounds and obtain the independent domination stability of some operations of two graphs.
