Abstract:In this paper, we show that for all length 3 patterns, all positive integers are fertility numbers for the consecutive-pattern-avoiding stack-sorting map $\textrm{SC}_\sigma$, which resolves conjecture 8.3 from Defant and Zheng. The paper ends with a conjecture.

Abstract:We introduce the stack-sorting map $\text{SC}_\sigma$ that sorts, in a right-greedy manner, an input permutation through a stack that avoids some vincular pattern $\sigma$. The stack-sorting maps of Cerbai et al. in which the stack avoids a pattern classically and Defant and Zheng in which the stack avoids a pattern consecutively follow as special cases. We first characterize and enumerate the sorting class $\text{Sort}(\text{SC}_\sigma)$, the set of permutations sorted by $s\circ\text{SC}_\sigma$, for seven length $3$ patterns $\sigma$. We also decide when $\text{Sort}(\text{SC}_\sigma)$ is a permutation class. Next, we compute $\max_{\pi\in \mathfrak S_n}|\text{SC}_\sigma^{-1}(\pi)|$ and characterize the periodic points of $\text{SC}_\sigma$ for several length $3$ patterns $\sigma$. We end with several conjectures and open problems.

Abstract:West's stack-sorting map involves a stack which avoids the permutation $21$ consecutively. Defant and Zheng extended this to a consecutive-pattern-avoiding stack-sorting map $SC_\sigma$, where the stack must always avoid a given permutation $\sigma$ consecutively. We address one of the main conjectures raised by Defant and Zheng in their dynamical approach to $SC_\sigma$. Specifically, we show that the periodic points of $SC_\sigma$ are precisely the permutations that consecutively avoid $\sigma$ and its reverse.

Abstract:Let $s$ be West's stack-sorting map, and let $s_{T}$ be the generalized stack-sorting map, where instead of being required to increase, the stack avoids subpermutations that are order-isomorphic to any permutation in the set $T$. In 2020, Cerbai, Claesson, and Ferrari introduced the $\sigma$-machine $s \circ s_{\sigma}$ as a generalization of West's $2$-stack-sorting-map $s \circ s$. As a further generalization, in 2021, Baril, Cerbai, Khalil, and Vajnovski introduced the $(\sigma, \tau)$-machine $s \circ s_{\sigma, \tau}$ and enumerated $|\Sort_{n}(\sigma,\tau)|$ -- the number of permutations in $S_n$ that are mapped to the identity by the $(\sigma, \tau)$-machine -- for six pairs of length $3$ permutations $(\sigma, \tau)$. In this work, we settle a conjecture by Baril, Cerbai, Khalil, and Vajnovski on the only remaining pair of length $3$ patterns $(\sigma, \tau) = (132, 321)$ for which $|\Sort_{n}(\sigma, \tau)|$ appears in the OEIS. In addition, we enumerate $|\Sort_n(123, 321)|$, which does not appear in the OEIS, but has a simple closed form.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the distribution of consecutive patterns in the set of 123-avoiding permutations and the set of 132-avoiding permutations, that is, in $\mathcal{S}_n(123)$ and $\mathcal{S}_n(132)$. We first study the distribution of consecutive pattern $\gamma$-matches in $\mathcal{S}_n(123)$ and $\mathcal{S}_n(132)$ for each length 3 consecutive pattern $\gamma$. Then we extend our methods to study the joint distributions of multiple consecutive patterns. Some more general cases are discussed in this paper as well.

Abstract:Let $s$ be West's deterministic stack-sorting map. A well-known result (West) is that any length $n$ permutation can be sorted with $n-1$ iterations of $s.$ In 2020, Defant introduced the notion of highly-sorted permutations -- permutations in $s^t(S_n)$ for $t \lessapprox n-1.$ In 2023, Choi and Choi extended this notion to generalized stack-sorting maps $s_{\sigma},$ where we relax the condition of becoming sorted to the analogous condition of becoming periodic with respect to $s_{\sigma}.$ In this work, we introduce the notion of minimally-sorted permutations $\mathfrak{M}_n$ as an antithesis to Defant's highly-sorted permutations, and show that $\text{ord}_{s_{123, 132}}(S_n) = 2 \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \rfloor,$ strengthening Berlow's 2021 classification of periodic points.

Abstract:In 2019, Bóna and Smith introduced the notion of \emph{strong pattern avoidance}, that is, a permutation and its square both avoid a given pattern. In this paper, we enumerate the set of permutations $\pi$ which not only strongly avoid the pattern $312$ or $231$ but also avoid the pattern $\tau$, for $\tau\in S_3$ and some $\tau\in S_4$. One of them is to give a positive answer to a conjecture of Archer and Geary.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $\pi$ is independent of the choice of $\pi\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $\pi\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $\pi \in S_3$. Analogous to Lewis's method, we establish a bijection from generalized permutations to rectangular semistandard Young tableaux which will recover several known results in the literature.

We give the basis of the class of permutations that are sortable by this machine which shows that it is enumerated by the Schröder numbers.

Abstract:Let a sock be an element of an ordered finite alphabet A and a sequence of these elements be a sock sequence. In 2023, Xia introduced a deterministic version of Defant and Kravitz's stack-sorting map by defining the $\phi_{\sigma}$ and $\phi_{\overline{\sigma}}$ pattern-avoidance stack-sorting maps for sock sequences. Xia showed that the $\phi_{aba}$ map is the only one that eventually sorts all set partitions; in this paper, we prove deeper results regarding $\phi_{aba}$ and $\phi_{\overline{aba}}$ as a natural next step. We newly define two algorithms with time complexity $O(n^3)$ that determine if any given sock sequence is in the image of $\phi_{aba}$ or $\phi_{\overline{aba}}$ respectively. We also show that the maximum number of preimages that a sock sequence of length $n$ has grows at least exponentially under both the $\phi_{aba}$ and $\phi_{\overline{aba}}$ maps. Additionally, we prove results regarding fertility numbers (introduced by Defant) in the context of set partitions and multiple-pattern-avoiding stacks.

Pattern avoidance in nonnesting permutations

Abstract:Nonnesting permutations are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid subsequences of the form $abba$ for any $a\neq b$. These permutations have recently been studied in connection to noncrossing (also called quasi-Stirling) permutations, which are those that avoid subsequences of the form $abab$, and in turn generalize the well-known Stirling permutations. Inspired by the work by Archer et al. on pattern avoidance in noncrossing permutations, we consider the analogous problem in the nonnesting case. We enumerate nonnesting permutations that avoid each set of two or more patterns of length 3, as well as those that avoid some sets of patterns of length 4. We obtain closed formulas and generating functions, some of which involve unexpected appearances of the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. Our proofs rely on decompositions, recurrences, and bijections.

Sign-Balanced Pattern-Avoiding Permutation Classes

Abstract:A set of permutations is called sign-balanced if the set contains the same number of even permutations as odd permutations. Let $S_n(\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \ldots, \sigma_r)$ be the set of permutations in the symmetric group $S_n$ which avoids patterns $\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \ldots, \sigma_r$. The aim of this paper is to investigate when, for certain patterns $\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \ldots, \sigma_r$, $S_n(\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \ldots, \sigma_r)$ is sign-balanced for every integer $n>1$. We prove that for any $\{\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \ldots, \sigma_r\}\subseteq S_3$, if $\{\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \ldots, \sigma_r\}$ is sign-balanced except $\{132, 213, 231, 312\}$, then $S_n(\sigma_1, \sigma_2, \ldots, \sigma_r)$ is sign-balanced for every integer $n>1$. In addition, we give some results in the case of avoiding some patterns of length $4$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pattern avoidance for stabilized-interval-free (SIF) permutations. These permutations are contained in the set of indecomposable permutations and in the set of derangements. We enumerate pattern-avoiding SIF permutations for classical and pairs of patterns of size 3. In particular, for the patterns 123 and 231, we rely on combinatorial arguments and the fixed-point distribution of general permutations avoiding these patterns. We briefly discuss 123-avoiding permutations with two fixed points and offer a conjecture for their enumeration by the distance between their fixed points. For the pattern 231, we also give a direct argument that uses a bijection to ordered forests.

Pattern-avoiding modified ascent sequences

Abstract:We initiate an in-depth study of pattern avoidance on modified ascent sequences. Our main technique consists in using Stanley's standardization to obtain a transport theorem between primitive modified ascent sequences and permutations avoiding a bivincular pattern of length three. We enumerate some patterns via bijections with other combinatorial structures such as Fishburn permutations, lattice paths and set partitions. We settle the last remaining case of a conjecture by Duncan and Steingrímsson by proving that modified ascent sequences avoiding 2321 are counted by the Bell numbers.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent proof of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture, we study the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a generalized pattern. Generalized patterns allow the requirement that some pairs of letters must be adjacent in an occurrence of the pattern in the permutation, and consecutive patterns are a particular case of them. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern, showing that they are an exponentially small proportion of the total number of permutations. For some other generalized patterns we give partial results, showing that the number of permutations avoiding them grows faster than for classical patterns but more slowly than for consecutive patterns.

Abstract:Let $\pi$ be a cycle permutation that can be expressed as one-line $\pi = \pi_1\pi_2 \cdot\cdot\cdot \pi_n$ and a cycle form $\pi = (c_1,c_2, ..., c_n)$. Archer et al. introduced the notion of pattern avoidance of one-line and all cycle forms for a cycle permutation $\pi$, defined as $\pi_1\pi_2 \cdot\cdot\cdot \pi_n$ and its arbitrary cycle form $c_ic_{i+1}\cdot\cdot\cdot c_nc_1c_2\cdot\cdot\cdot c_{i-1}$ avoid a given pattern. Let $\mathcal{A}^\circ_n(\sigma; \tau)$ denote the set of cyclic permutations in the symmetric group $S_n$ that avoid $\sigma$ in their one-line form and avoid $\tau$ in their all cycle forms. In this note, we prove that $|\mathcal{A}^\circ_n(2431; 1324)|$ is the $(n-1)^{\rm{st}}$ Pell number for any positive integer $n$. Thereby, we give a positive answer to a conjecture of Archer et al.

Abstract:Given a permutation $\sigma = \sigma_1 \ldots \sigma_n$ in the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_{n}$, we say that $\sigma_i$ matches the quadrant marked mesh pattern $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ in $\sigma$ if there are at least $a$ points to the right of $\sigma_i$ in $\sigma$ which are greater than $\sigma_i$, at least $b$ points to the left of $\sigma_i$ in $\sigma$ which are greater than $\sigma_i$, at least $c$ points to the left of $\sigma_i$ in $\sigma$ which are smaller than $\sigma_i$, and at least $d$ points to the right of $\sigma_i$ in $\sigma$ which are smaller than $\sigma_i$. Kitaev, Remmel, and Tiefenbruck systematically studied the distribution of the number of matches of $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ in 132-avoiding permutations. The operation of reverse and complement on permutations allow one to translate their results to find the distribution of the number of $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ matches in 231-avoiding, 213-avoiding, and 312-avoiding permutations. In this paper, we study the distribution of the number of matches of $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ in 123-avoiding permutations. We provide explicit recurrence relations to enumerate our objects which can be used to give closed forms for the generating functions associated with such distributions. In many cases, we provide combinatorial explanations of the coefficients that appear in our generating functions.

Abstract:Let $\Omega$ be the set of odd positive integers and let $S:\Omega \rightarrow \Omega$ be the Syracuse function. It is proved that, for every permutation $\sigma$ of $(1,2,3)$, the set of triples of the form $(m,S(m),S^2(m))$ with permutation pattern $\sigma$ has positive density, and these densities are computed. However, there exist permutations $\tau$ of $(1,2,3,4)$ such that no quadruple $(m,S(m), S^2(m), S^3(m))$ has permutation pattern $\tau$. This implies the nonexistence of certain permutation patterns of $n$-tuples $(m,S(m),\ldots, S^{n-1}(m))$ for all $n \geq 4$.

Modified ascent sequences and Bell numbers

Abstract:In 2011, Duncan and Steingrímsson conjectured that modified ascent sequences avoiding any of the patterns 212, 1212, 2132, 2213, 2231 and 2321 are counted by the Bell numbers. Furthermore, the distribution of the number of ascents is the reverse of the distribution of blocks on set partitions. We solve the conjecture for all the patterns except 2321. We describe the corresponding sets of Fishburn permutations by pattern avoidance, and leave some open questions for future work.
