Abstract:Raman spectroscopy is a valuable characterization tool for two dimensional (2D) materials. Although some of these materials are topological, the Raman signatures of electronic band topology have remained largely unexplored. On a theoretical study of 2D massive Dirac fermions, we report a selection rule and a peculiar phase difference between the Raman tensor elements, which are sensitive to the sign of the Dirac mass. We discuss on the applicability of our results to Chern insulators and to magnetized monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the Raman tensor characteristics of the two - dimensional (2D) Dirac fermion system with non - zero Dirac mass. Specifically, the author focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Raman selection rules and phase differences**: The author studied the Raman selection rules under the irradiation of different polarized lights, especially circularly polarized light, and discovered a special phase difference. These characteristics are very sensitive to the sign of the Dirac mass. 2. **Characterization of topological phases**: The author hopes to explore and characterize topological phases through these characteristics, especially Chern insulators and magnetized transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer materials. These problems are very important for understanding the electronic band topological structure of two - dimensional materials. ### Summary of the core problems in the paper - **Selection rules of Raman tensors**: The author discovered the selection rules of Raman tensors under specific conditions (such as circularly polarized light irradiation), which are different from the known optical valley selection rules. \[ \hat{e}^\dagger_1\cdot R_\lambda\cdot \hat{e}_2 = R_{xx}[1\mp\text{sign}(v_xv_y m)] \] where \(\hat{e}_1\) and \(\hat{e}_2\) are the polarization directions of the incident light and the scattered light respectively, \(m\) is the Dirac mass, and \(v_x\) and \(v_y\) are the Dirac velocities. - **Quantification of phase differences**: The author also found that the phase differences between Raman tensor elements are quantified as \(\pm\pi/2\), and this phase difference depends on the sign of the Dirac mass: \[ \phi_{xy}-\phi_{xx}=\frac{\pi}{2}\text{sign}(v_xv_y m) \] - **Correlation of topological properties**: The author pointed out that these results may be related to part of the electronic Chern numbers in the two - dimensional Dirac fermion model, although this relationship is not a direct correspondence. ### Application prospects The author discussed the potential applications of these results in experiments, especially in the measurement of angle - resolved Raman spectroscopy. For example, on the surface of magnetic topological insulators, the sign of the Dirac mass can be changed by reversing the magnetic order, so that the change in Raman scattering intensity can be observed. In addition, the author also proposed to enhance the verifiability of theoretical predictions through resonant Raman scattering, but there are still some challenges in practical applications, such as the problem of small energy gaps. ### Summary This paper reveals the unique properties of Raman tensors in the two - dimensional Dirac fermion system through theoretical calculations, especially their dependence on Dirac mass and polarized light. These findings not only help to deeply understand the electronic structure of two - dimensional materials, but also provide a theoretical basis for future experimental verification.
