Abstract:We resum threshold double logarithms that appear in inclusive production of heavy quarkonium. This resolves the catastrophic failure of fixed-order perturbation theory where quarkonium cross sections at large transverse momentum can turn negative due to large radiative corrections. We find that resummation is imperative for describing measured prompt production rates of $J/\psi$ at large transverse momentum.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the serious inconsistency between the production rate of heavy quarkonium (such as J/ψ) measured at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the large transverse momentum region and the fixed - order perturbative theory predictions based on the non - relativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) factorization formalism. Specifically, when the transverse momentum is much greater than 100 GeV, the J/ψ production rate predicted by the fixed - order perturbative theory not only fails to describe the experimental data but even gives unphysical negative values. This inconsistency is considered to be caused by threshold logarithms, which originate from singularities in the radiative corrections near the phase - space boundary. Therefore, this paper solves this problem by resumming these threshold logarithms to improve the accuracy of the description of the heavy quarkonium production rate at large transverse momenta.
### Main Content
1. **Problem Background**:
- Recent LHC measurements show that at very large transverse momenta, the production rate of charmonium (such as J/ψ) poses a severe challenge to the theory based on the non - relativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) factorization formalism.
- The fixed - order (FO) perturbative theory fails in its predictions at large transverse momenta. In particular, when the transverse momentum exceeds 100 GeV, the predicted J/ψ production rate may become negative, which is unphysical.
2. **Solution**:
- The authors solve this problem by resumming the threshold double logarithms. These logarithms originate from singularities in the radiative corrections near the phase - space boundary.
- They use the Grammer - Yennie approximation to handle soft gluon attachments, thereby obtaining the singular terms in the short - distance coefficients (SDCs), and resum these threshold logarithms by the exponentiation method.
3. **Technical Details**:
- **NRQCD Factorization**: In the NRQCD factorization formalism, the total cross - section of heavy quarkonium is represented by the product of short - distance coefficients (SDCs) and long - distance matrix elements (LDMEs).
- **Resummation of Threshold Logarithms**: The authors resum the threshold logarithms at the double - logarithm level, which is especially important in the large transverse momentum region.
- **Soft Function**: By defining the soft function and using the Mellin transform, the authors are able to resum the threshold logarithms, thereby eliminating the singularities in the SDCs.
4. **Results**:
- The resummed SDCs eliminate the singularities, ensuring the positivity of the heavy quarkonium production rate at large transverse momenta.
- The authors calculate the J/ψ production rate at large transverse momenta using the resummed SDCs and find a significantly improved agreement with the LHC data.
### Conclusion
By resumming the threshold double logarithms, this paper significantly improves the NRQCD description of the heavy quarkonium production rate at large transverse momenta. This solves the problem of the failure of the fixed - order perturbative theory in predicting at large transverse momenta, especially avoiding the situation where the production rate becomes negative. The resummation method may also be important for describing measurements involving kinematic cuts near the phase - space boundary, such as photoproduction rates and heavy quarkonium in jets.
