Abstract:Let $G$ be a topological group and let $K,L\subseteq G$ be closed subgroups, with $K\subseteq L$. We prove that if $L$ is a locally compact pro-Lie group, then the map $q:G/K\to G/L$ is a fibration. As an application of this, we obtain two older results by Skljarenko, Madison and Mostert.

Abstract:As groupoids generalize groups, motivated by group extensions we consider a kind of fibrations of Lie groupoids, called locally topological product Lie groupoid fibrations with fiber $\sf A$, i.e., \[ 1\rightarrow {\sf A} \rightarrow {\sf G} \rightarrow {\sf K}\rightarrow 1 \] where $\sf A,\sf G$ and $\sf K$ are Lie groupoids. Similar to the theory of group extensions, we show that the existence of locally topological product Lie groupoid fibrations with fiber $\sf A$ over $\sf K$ is obstructed by a groupoid cohomology of $H^3_{\bar \Lambda}({\sf K},Z_{\sf A})$, and these locally topological product Lie groupoid fibrations are classified by $H^2_{\bar \Lambda}({\sf K},Z_{\sf A})$ once exists. Here $Z_{\sf A}$ is the center of $\sf A$. This generalizes the theory of group extensions, of gerbes over manifolds/groupoids and etc.

Abstract:We study totally disconnected locally compact second countable (t.d.l.c.s.c.) groups that contain a compact open subgroup with finite rank. We show such groups that additionally admit a pro-$\pi$ compact open subgroup for some finite set of primes $\pi$ are virtually an extension of a finite direct product of topologically simple groups by an elementary group. This result, in particular, applies to l.c.s.c. $p$-adic Lie groups. We go on to prove a decomposition result for all t.d.l.c.s.c. groups containing a compact open subgroup with finite rank. In the course of proving these theorems, we demonstrate independently interesting structure results for t.d.l.c.s.c. groups with a compact open pro-nilpotent subgroup and for topologically simple l.c.s.c. $p$-adic Lie groups.

$(g,k)$-Fermat curves: an embedding of moduli spaces

Abstract:A group $H \cong {\mathbb Z}_{k}^{2g}$, where $g,k \geq 2$ are integers, of conformal automorphisms of a closed Riemann surface $S$ is called a $(g,k)$-Fermat group if it acts freely with quotient $S/H$ of genus $g$. We study some properties of these type of objects, in particular, we observe that $S$ is non-hyperelliptic and, if $k=p^{r}$, where $p>84(g-1)$ is a prime integer and $r \geq 1$, then $H$ is the unique $(g,k)$-Fermat group of $S$. Let $\Gamma$ be a co-compact torsion free Fuchsian group such that $S/H={\mathbb H}^{2}/\Gamma$. If $\Gamma_{k}$ is its normal subgroup generated by its commutators and the $k$-powers of its elements, then there is a biholomorphism between $S$ and ${\mathbb H}^{2}/\Gamma_{k}$ congugating $H$ to $\Gamma/\Gamma_{k}$. The inclusion $\Gamma_{k} < \Gamma$ induces a natural holomorphic embedding $\Theta_{k}:{\mathcal T}(\Gamma) \hookrightarrow {\mathcal T}(\Gamma_{k})$ of the corresponding Teichmüller spaces. Such an embedding induces a holomorphic map, at the level of their moduli spaces, $\Phi_{k}:{\mathcal M}(\Gamma) \to {\mathcal M}(\Gamma_{k})$. As a consequence of the results on $(g,k)$-Fermat groups, we provide sufficient conditions for the injectivity of $\Phi_{k}$.

Abstract:I show that any locally Cartesian left localisation of a presentable infinity-category admits a right proper model structure in which all morphisms are cofibrations, and obtain a Koszul duality classification of its fibrations. By a simple criterion in terms of generators for a localisation to be locally Cartesian, this applies to any nullification functor. In particular, it includes examples with non-trivial "homotopical content." I further describe, and provide examples from, the set of fibrations in three contexts: the higher categorical Thomason model structure of Mazel-Gee, where fibrations are local systems; Morel-Voevodsky A1-localisation, where they are a higher analogue of A1-covering spaces; and the Quillen plus construction, where they are related to loop space modules trivialised over the universal acyclic extension.

Abstract:Consider a simple algebraic group $G$ of classical type and its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. Let $(e,h,f) \subset \mathfrak{g}$ be an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple and $Q_e= C_G(e,h,f)$. The torus $T_e$ that comes from the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple acts on the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_e$. Let $\mathcal{B}_e^{gr}$ denote the fixed point loci of $\mathcal{B}_e$ under this torus action. Our main geometric result is that when the partition of $e$ has up to $4$ rows, the derived category $D^b(\mathcal{B}_e^{gr})$ admits a complete exceptional collection that is compatible with the $Q_e$-action. The objects in this collection give us a finite set $Y_e$ that is naturally equipped with a $Q_e$-centrally extended structure. We prove that the set $Y_e$ constructed in this way coincides with a finite set that has appeared in various contexts in representation theory. For example, a direct summand $J_c$ of the asymptotic Hecke algebra is isomorphic to $K_0(Sh^{Q_e}(Y_e\times Y_e)$. The left cells in the two-sided cell $c$ corresponding to the adjoint orbit of $e$ are in bijection with the $Q_e$-orbits in $Y_e$. Our main numerical result is an algorithm to compute the multiplicities of the $Q_e$-centrally extended orbits that appear in $Y_e$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be one of the finite general linear, unitary, symplectic or orthogonal groups over finite fields of odd order. We find the cardinality of the fibers of the square map at a given generic element. Using this we find the number of real conjugacy classes of $G$. This is primarily achieved by leveraging a recent solution to Brauer's problem 14.

Abstract:Topological properties of compactly-fibered coset spaces are investigated. It is proved that for a compactly-fibered coset space X with Nag(X) <= tau, the closure of a family of G(tau)-sets is also a G(tau)-set in X. We also show that the equation chi(X) = pi chi(X) holds for any compactly-fibered coset space X. A Dichotomy Theorem for compactly-fibered coset spaces is established: every remainder of such a space has the Baire property, or is sigma-compact.

Abstract:. Minimal groups are the Hausdorﬀ topological groups G satisfying the open mapping theorem with respect to continuous isomorphisms, i.e., every continuous isomorphism G (cid:47) (cid:47) H , with a Hausdorﬀ topological group H , is a topological isomorphism. A topological group ( G, τ ) is called locally minimal if there exists a neighbourhood V of the identity such that for every Hausdorﬀ group topology σ ≤ τ with V ∈ σ one has σ = τ . Minimal groups, as well as locally compact groups, are locally minimal. According to a well known theorem of Prodanov every subgroup of an inﬁnite compact abelian group K is minimal if and only if K is isomorphic to the group Z p of p -adic integers for some prime p . We ﬁnd a remarkable connection of local minimality to Lie groups and p -adic numbers by means of the following results extending Prodanov’s theorem: every subgroup of a locally compact abelian group K is locally minimal if and only if K is either a Lie group or K has an open subgroup isomorphic to Z p for some prime p . In the nonabelian case we prove that all subgroups of a connected locally compact group are locally minimal if and only if K is a Lie group, resolving in the positive Problem 7.49 from [ ? ].

Abstract:We give a normalizer decomposition for a p-local compact group (S, F, L) that describes |L| as a homotopy colimit indexed over a finite poset. Our work generalizes the normalizer decompositions for finite groups due to Dwyer, for p-local finite groups due to Libman, and for compact Lie groups in separate work due to Libman. Our approach gives a result in the Lie group case that avoids topological subtleties with Quillen's Theorem A, because we work with discrete groups. We compute the normalizer decomposition for the p-completed classifying spaces of U(p) and SU(p) and for the p-compact groups of Aguade and Zabrodsky.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a Polish group and let $H \leq G$ be a compact subgroup. We prove that there exists a Borel set $T \subset G$ which is simultaneously a complete set of coset representatives of left and right cosets, provided that a certain index condition is satisfied. Moreover, we prove that this index condition holds provided that $G$ is locally compact and $G/G^\circ$ is compact or $H$ is a compact Lie group. This generalizes a result which is known for discrete groups under various finiteness assumptions, but is known to fail for general inclusions of infinite groups. As an application, we prove that Bohr closed subgroups of countable, discrete groups admit common transversals.

Abstract:Motivated by the study of the large-scale geometry of topological groups, we investigate particular families of subsets of topological groups named group ideals. We compare different group ideals in the realm of locally compact groups. In particular, we show that a subset of a locally compact abelian group is relatively compact if and only if it is coarsely bounded. Using this result, we prove that an infinite-dimensional Banach space cannot be embedded into any product of locally compact groups.

Abstract:We obtain a homological characterisation of virtually free-by-cyclic groups among groups that are hyperbolic and virtually compact special. As a consequence, we show that many groups known to be coherent actually possess the stronger property of being virtually free-by-cyclic. In particular, we show that all one-relator groups with torsion are virtually free-by-cyclic, solving a conjecture of Baumslag.

Abstract:We compare finiteness properties of locally compact groups that generalize the properties of being compactly generated and of being compactly presented. Three such families of properties have been proposed: Abels--Tiemeyer's type $C_n$, coarse $(n-1)$-connectedness, and Castellano--Corob-Cook's type $F_n$. The first was defined for locally compact groups, the second can be defined for general topological groups, while the third was defined only for tdlc groups. We prove that all three families lead to the same notion for locally compact groups. This justifies working with these properties despite the fact that it is still unclear in which sense they describe finiteness properties of free classifying spaces for locally compact groups. Various parts of the arguments are well-known to various experts. By putting them together we hope to clarify the literature.

Abstract:We present a combinatorial analysis of fiber bundles of generalized configuration spaces on connected abelian Lie groups. These bundles are akin to those of Fadell-Neuwirth for configuration spaces, and their existence is detected by a combinatorial property of an associated finite partially ordered set. This is consistent with Terao's fibration theorem connecting bundles of hyperplane arrangements to Stanley's lattice supersolvability. We obtain a combinatorially determined class of K($\pi$,1) toric and elliptic arrangements. Under a stronger combinatorial condition, we prove a factorization of the Poincaré polynomial when the Lie group is noncompact. In the case of toric arrangements, this provides an analogue of Falk-Randell's formula relating the Poincaré polynomial to the lower central series of the fundamental group.

Categories and General Algebraic Structures with Application

Abstract:We show that the lattice of compactifications of a topological group $G$ is a complete lattice which is isomorphic to the lattice of all closed normal subgroups of the Bohr compactification $bG$ of $G$. The correspondence defines a contravariant functor from the category of topological groups to the category of complete lattices. Some properties of the compactification lattice of a topological group are obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the properties of totally local formations of finite groups. We will prove that if F is a non-nilpotent totally local formation, then F/F-infinity(0) is a complemented lattice if and only if it is Boolean lattice, where F-o is the local nilpotent subformation of F. Thus, the interesting problem proposed by A.N. Skiba in his monograph, "Algebra of Formations" can be answered positively.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a residually finite, good group of finite virtual cohomological dimension. We prove that the natural monomorphism $G\hookrightarrow\hat{G}$ induces a bijective correspondence between conjugacy classes of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ and those of its profinite completion $\hat{G}$. Moreover, we prove that the centralizers and normalizers in $\hat{G}$ of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ are the closures of the respective centralizers and normalizers in $G$. With somewhat more restrictive hypotheses, we prove the same results for finite solvable subgroups of $G$. In the last section, we give a few applications of this theorem to hyperelliptic mapping class groups and virtually compact special toral relatively hyperbolic groups (these include fundamental groups of $3$-orbifolds and of uniform standard arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds).
