Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected finite graph. Backman, Baker, and Yuen have constructed a family of explicit and easy-to-describe bijections $g_{\sigma,\sigma^*}$ between spanning trees of $G$ and $(\sigma,\sigma^*)$-compatible orientations, where the $(\sigma,\sigma^*)$-compatible orientations are the representatives of equivalence classes of orientations up to cycle-cocycle reversal which are determined by a cycle signature $\sigma$ and a cocycle signature $\sigma^*$. Their proof makes use of zonotopal subdivisions and the bijections $g_{\sigma,\sigma^*}$ are called \emph{geometric bijections}. In this paper, we extend the geometric bijections to subgraph-orientation correspondences. Moreover, we extend the geometric constructions accordingly. Our proofs are purely combinatorial, even for the geometric constructions. We also provide geometric proofs for partial results, which make use of zonotopal tiling, relate to Backman, Baker, and Yuen's method, and motivate our combinatorial constructions. Finally, we explain that the main results hold for \emph{regular matroids}.

Abstract:We study the set of NBC sets (no broken circuit sets) of the Linial arrangement and deduce a constructive bijection to the set of local binary search trees. We then generalize this construction to two families of Linial type arrangements for which the bijections are with some $k$-ary labelled trees that we introduce for this purpose.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected graph. The Jacobian group (also known as the Picard group or sandpile group) of $G$ is a finite abelian group whose cardinality equals the number of spanning trees of $G$. The Jacobian group admits a canonical simply transitive action on the set $\mathcal{R}(G)$ of cycle-cocycle reversal classes of orientations of $G$. Hence one can construct combinatorial bijections between spanning trees of $G$ and $\mathcal{R}(G)$ to build connections between spanning trees and the Jacobian group. The BBY bijections and the Bernardi bijections are two important examples. In this paper, we construct a new family of such bijections that includes both. Our bijections depend on a pair of atlases (different from the ones in manifold theory) that abstract and generalize certain common features of the two known bijections. The definitions of these atlases are derived from triangulations and dissections of the Lawrence polytopes associated to $G$. The acyclic cycle signatures and cocycle signatures used to define the BBY bijections correspond to regular triangulations. Our bijections can extend to subgraph-orientation correspondences. Most of our results hold for regular matroids. We present our work in the language of fourientations, which are a generalization of orientations.

Abstract:For an oriented matroid M, and given a generic single element extension and a generic single element lifting of M, the main result of [1] provides a bijection between bases of M and certain reorientations of M induced by the extension-lifting. This note is intended to somehow clarify and precise the geometric setting for this paper in terms of oriented matroid arrangements and oriented matroid programming, to describe and prove the main bijective result in a short simple way, and to show how it consists of combining two direct bijections and a central bijection, which is the same as a special case - practically uniform - of the bounded case of the active bijection [5, 6]. (The relation with the active bijection is addressed in [1] in an indirect and more complicated way.)

Abstract:We study point-line configurations through the lens of projective geometry and matroid theory. Our focus is on their realization spaces, where we introduce the concepts of liftable and quasi-liftable configurations, exploring cases in which an n-tuple of collinear points can be lifted to a nondegenerate realization of a point-line configuration. We show that forest configurations are liftable and characterize the realization space of liftable configurations as the solution set of certain linear systems of equations. Moreover, we study the Zariski closure of the realization spaces of liftable and quasi-liftable configurations, known as matroid varieties, and establish their irreducibility. Additionally, we compute an irreducible decomposition for their corresponding circuit varieties. Applying these liftability properties, we present a procedure to generate some of the defining equations of the associated matroid varieties. As corollaries, we provide a geometric representation for the defining equations of two specific examples: the quadrilateral set and the 3×4 grid. While the polynomials for the latter were previously computed using specialized algorithms tailored for this configuration, the geometric interpretation of these generators was missing. We compute a minimal generating set for the corresponding ideals.

Abstract:Pancyclicity is a stronger property than Hamiltonicity. In 1973, Bondy stated his celebrated meta-conjecture. Since then, problems related to pancyclicity have attracted a lot of attentions and interests of researchers. A connected graph G is two-disjoint-cycle-cover [t1,t2] -pancyclic or briefly 2-DCC [t1,t2] -pancyclic if for any positive integer t with t∈[t1,t2] , there are two vertex-disjoint cycles C1 and C2 in G satisfying |V(C1)|=t and |V(C2)|=|V(G)|−t . In this paper, it is proved that the n -dimensional split-star network Sn2 is 2-DCC [3,⌊n!2⌋] -pancyclic when n≥3 .

On $k$-neighborly reorientations of oriented matroids

Abstract:We study the existence and the number of $k$-neighborly reorientations of an oriented matroid. This leads to $k$-variants of McMullen's problem and Roudneff's conjecture, the case $k=1$ being the original statements on complete cells in arrangements. Adding to results of Larman and García-Colín, we provide new bounds on the $k$-McMullen's problem and prove the conjecture for several ranks and $k$ by computer. Further, we show that $k$-Roudneff's conjecture for fixed rank and $k$ reduces to a finite case analyse. As a consequence we prove the conjecture for odd rank $r$ and $k=\frac{r-1}{2}$ as well as for rank $6$ and $k=2$ with the aid of the computer.

Irreducibility, Smoothness, and Connectivity of Realization Spaces of Matroids and Hyperplane Arrangements

Abstract:We study the realization spaces of matroids and hyperplane arrangements. First, we define the notion of naive dimension for the realization space of matroids and compare it with the expected dimension and the algebraic dimension, exploring the conditions under which these dimensions coincide. Next, we introduce the family of inductively connected matroids and investigate their realization spaces, establishing that they are smooth, irreducible, and isomorphic to a Zariski open subset of a complex space with a known dimension. Furthermore, we present an explicit procedure for computing their defining equations. As corollaries, we identify families of hyperplane arrangements whose moduli spaces are connected. Finally, we apply our results to study the rigidity of matroids. Rigidity, which involves matroids with a unique realization under projective transformations, is key to understanding the connectivity of the moduli spaces of the corresponding hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:Targets are matroids that arise from a nested sequence of flats in a projective geometry. This class of matroids was introduced by Nelson and Nomoto, who found the forbidden induced restrictions for binary targets. This paper generalizes their result to targets arising from projective geometries over $GF(q)$. We also consider targets arising from nested sequences of affine flats and determine the forbidden induced restrictions for affine targets.

Abstract:For a subclass of matchings, set partitions, and permutations, we describe a direct bijection involving only arc annotated diagrams that not only interchanges maximum nesting and crossing numbers, but also all refinements of crossing and nesting numbers. Furthermore, we show that the bijection cannot be applied to a similar class of coloured arc annotated diagrams.

An Intersection Matrix for Affine Hyperplane Arrangements

Abstract:For a real affine hyperplane arrangement, we define an integer intersection matrix with a natural $q$-deformation related to the intersections of bounded chambers of the arrangement. By connecting the integer matrix to a bilinear form of Schechtman-Varchenko, we show that there is a closed formula for its determinant that only depends on the combinatorics of the underlying matroid. We conjecture an analogous formula for its $q$-deformation. Our work also applies more generally in the setting of affine oriented matroids. Additionally, we give a representation-theoretic interpretation of our $q$-intersection matrix using Braden-Licata-Proudfoot-Websters's hypertoric category $\mathcal{O}$ (or more generally Kowalenko-Mautner's category $\mathcal{O}$ for oriented matroid programs). This paper is part of a broader program to categorify matroidal Schur algebras defined by Braden-Mautner.

Abstract:There are fairly large families of unitarily inequivalent complete sets of N+1 mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in C^N for various prime powers N. The number of such sets is not bounded above by any polynomial as a function of N. While it is standard that there is a superficial similarity between complete sets of MUBs and finite affine planes, there is an intimate relationship between these large families and affine planes. This note briefly summarizes "old" results that do not appear to be well-known concerning known families of complete sets of MUBs and their associated planes.

Abstract:We present a new method of establishing a bijective correspondence - in fact, a lattice isomorphism - between action- and coaction-invariant ideals of C*-algebras and their crossed products by a fixed locally compact group. It is known that such a correspondence exists whenever the group is amenable; our results hold for any locally compact group under a natural form of coaction invariance.

Abstract:We study simplicial complexes (hypergraphs closed under taking subsets) that are the intersection of a given number k of matroids. We prove bounds on their chromatic numbers (the minimum number of edges required to cover the ground set) and their list chromatic numbers. Settling a conjecture of Kiraly and Berczi et. al., we prove that the list chromatic number is at most k times the chromatic number. Following the footsteps of Edmonds, who considered the case k=2, we study three polytopes associated with k-tuples of matroids, and prove bounds on the distances between them. The tools used are in part topological.

Abstract:We describe a fully faithful embedding of projective geometries, given in terms of closure operators, into $\mathbb{F}_1$-modules, in the sense of Connes and Consani. This factors through a faithful functor out of simple pointed matroids. This follows from our construction of a fully faithful embedding of weakly unital, commutative hypermagmas into $\fun$-modules. This embedding is of independent interest as it generalizes the classical Eilenberg-MacLane embedding for commutative monoids and recovers Segal's nerve construction for commutative partial monoids. For this reason, we spend some time elaborating its structure.

On the topology of conormal complexes and posets of matroids

Abstract:We introduce the poset of biflats of a matroid $M$, a Lagrangian analog of the lattice of flats of $M$, and study the topology of its order complex, which we call the biflats complex. This work continues the study of the Lagrangian combinatorics of matroids, which was recently initiated by work of Ardila, Denham and Huh. We show the biflats complex contains two distinguished subcomplexes: the conormal complex of $M$ and the simplicial join of the Bergman complexes of $M$ and $M^\perp$, the matroidal dual of $M$. Our main theorems give sequences of elementary collapses of the biflats complex onto the conormal complex and the join of the Bergman complexes of $M$ and $M^\perp$. These collapses give a combinatorial proof that the biflats complex, conormal complex and the join of the Bergman complexes of $M$ and $M^\perp$ are all simple homotopy equivalent. Although simple homotopy equivalent, these complexes have many different combinatorial properties. We collect and prove a list of such properties.

Closed Neighborhood Balanced Coloring of Graphs

Abstract:A coloring of the vertex set of a graph using the colors red and blue is a closed neighborhood balanced coloring if for each vertex there are an equal number of red and blue vertices in its closed neighborhood. A graph with such a coloring is called a CNBC graph. Freyberg and Marr studied the related class of NBC graphs where closed neighborhood is replaced by open neighborhood. We prove results about CNBC graphs and NBC graphs. We show that the class of CNBC graphs is not hereditary, that the sizes of the color classes can be arbitrarily different, and that if the sizes of the color classes are equal, then a graph is a CNBC graph if and only if its complement is an NBC graph. When the sizes of the color classes are equal, we show that the join of two CNBC graphs is a CNBC graph, and the lexicographic product of a CNBC graph with any graph is a CNBC graph. We prove that the Cartesian product of any CNBC graph and any NBC graph is a CNBC graph, and characterize when a hypercube is an NBC graph or a CNBC graph, but show that the product of two CNBC graphs need not be an NBC graph. We show that the strong product of a CNBC graph with any graph is a CNBC graph. We construct infinite families of circulants that are CNBC graphs, and give characterizations of CNBC trees, generalized Petersen graphs, cubic circulants and quintic circulants when $n\equiv 2 \pmod 4$.

Abstract:We study the representability of sets by extended formulations using mixed-integer bilevel programs. We show that feasible regions modeled by continuous bilevel constraints (with no integer variables), complementarity constraints, and polyhedral reverse convex constraints are all finite unions of polyhedra. Conversely, any finite union of polyhedra can be represented using any one of these three paradigms. We then prove that the feasible region of bilevel problems with integer variables exclusively in the upper level is a finite union of sets representable by mixed-integer programs and vice versa. Further, we prove that, up to topological closures, we do not get additional modeling power by allowing integer variables in the lower level as well. To establish the last statement, we prove that the family of sets that are finite unions of mixed-integer representable sets (up to topological closures) forms an algebra of sets; i.e., this family is closed under finite unions, intersections and complementation.

Finitary affine oriented matroids

Abstract:We initiate the axiomatic study of affine oriented matroids (AOMs) on arbitrary ground sets, obtaining fundamental notions such as minors, reorientations and a natural embedding into the frame work of Complexes of Oriented Matroids. The restriction to the finitary case (FAOMs) allows us to study tope graphs and covector posets, as well as to view FAOMs as oriented finitary semimatroids. We show shellability of FAOMs and single out the FAOMs that are affinely homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$. Finally, we study group actions on AOMs, whose quotients in the case of FAOMs are a stepping stone towards a general theory of affine and toric pseudoarrangements. Our results include applications of the multiplicity Tutte polynomial of group actions of semimatroids, generalizing enumerative properties of toric arrangements to a combinatorially defined class of arrangements of submanifolds. This answers partially a question by Ehrenborg and Readdy.
