Abstract:In this work, we study the semi-classical limit of the Schrödinger equation with random inputs, and show that the semi-classical Schrödinger equation produces O(ε) oscillations in the random variable space. With the Gaussian wave packet transform, the original Schrödinger equation is mapped to an ordinary differential equation (ODE) system for the wave packet parameters coupled with a partial differential equation (PDE) for the quantity w in rescaled variables. Further, we show that the w equation does not produce ε dependent oscillations, and thus it is more amenable for numerical simulations. We propose multi-level sampling strategy in implementing the Gaussian wave packet transform, where in the most costly part, i.e. simulating the w equation, it is sufficient to use ε independent samples. We also provide extensive numerical tests as well as meaningful numerical experiments to justify the properties of the numerical algorithm, and hopefully shed light on possible future directions.

Abstract:The propagation of an initially Gaussian wave packet of width $\Delta_0$ in a cubic non-linear Schrodinger equation with a negative coupling constant for the nonlinear term is considered . It is predicted analytically and verified numerically that for a free particle if $\Delta_0$ is less than a critical value $\Delta_c$, then the packet will propagate in time with linearly growing width but for $\Delta>\Delta_c$, the packet will start becoming narrow and cease to be a Gaussian . For a simple harmonic oscillator, we find that for $\Delta_0$ smaller than a critical value, there always exist a coupling strength for which the packet simply oscillates about the mean position without changing its shape.

The discrete Green's function method for wave packet expansion via the free Schrödinger equation

Abstract:We consider the expansion of wave packets governed by the free Schrödinger equation. This seemingly simple task plays an important role in simulations of various quantum experiments and in particular in the field of matter-wave interferometry. The initial tight confinement results in a very fast expansion of the wave function at later times which significantly complicates an efficient and precise numerical evaluation. In many practical cases the expansion time is too short for the validity of the stationary phase approximation and too long for an efficient application of Fourier collocation-based methods. We develop an alternative method based on a discretization of the free-particle propagator. This simple approach yields highly accurate results which readily follows from the exceptionally fast convergence of the trapezoidal rule approximation of integrals involving smooth and rapidly decaying functions. We discuss and analyze our approach in detail and demonstrate how to estimate the numerical error in the one-dimensional setting. Furthermore, we show that by exploiting the separability of the Green's function, the numerical effort of the multi-dimensional approximation is considerably reduced. Our method is very fast, highly accurate, and easy to implement on modern hardware.

Abstract:The study of wave packet is of great significance in quantum mechanics, optics and fluid mechanics. However, in order to solve the strict evolution behavior of wave packet, it is necessary not only to determine the parameters of various physical quantities such as mass, but also to carry out the complex integration process in configuration space and momentum space. In the final analysis, the evolution behavior of wave packet is the evolution behavior of distribution function parameters with time. Using the method of grey system theory, the time-varying parameters are replaced by time-varying response series, and then the formal structure is constructed according to the physical meaning of time evolution to realize the approximate simulation and approximate calculation of wave function expression. The advantage of this method is that it can simulate the evolution of wave packet under the uncertainty of each physical quantity. Based on the grey system theory, this paper uses GM (1,1) model to replace the time response function of wave packet distribution, obtains the simulated evolution behavior of wave packet wave function by means of mathematical techniques such as variational method, and makes error analysis and correction. In practical application, the approximate evolution behavior of wave function can be obtained only by determining the parameters of expansion coefficient of wave function. In this paper, the Gauss wave packet is taken as an example to discuss the method. The grey system theory of mathematical modeling is introduced into physical calculation for the first time, and an approximate calculation method which can be widely used in wave packet evolution calculation is given.

Abstract:We presented a new method to solve Schrodinger equations especially for two special kinds of potentials, which are named the first and second kind of Woods-Saxon-like potentials in this paper. The Woods-Saxon-like potential characterized by a rapid increase occurred at the system's boundary varies slowly inside and quickly becomes a constant potential outside the system. The first (second) kind of Woods-Saxon-like potentials is finite (divergent) at the origin. By using an elaborately constructed multi-step potential to approximate the Woods-Saxon-like potential, we can obtain its approximate energy levels and piecewise analytical wave functions with high accuracy. To test our method, we solved the Schroumldinger equations of three systems atomic nuclei (208)Pb, hydrogen atoms, and sodium nanospheres. We found that our method works quite well and is superior to conventional numerical methods for the situation of Woods-Saxon-like potentials. Besides being able to obtain approximate piecewise analytical wave functions, our method has two explicit advantages (a) the absolute error of energy levels is controlled by the number of the potential steps of the multi-step approximate potential, and (b) the potential is not necessary to have an analytical expression. Absorbing Boundary Conditions for Variable Potential Schrödinger Equations via Titchmarsh-Weyl Theory

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to simulate the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with a general variable potential. The key idea is to approximate the Titchmarsh-Weyl m-function (exact Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator) by a rational function with respect to an appropriate spectral parameter. By using this method, we overcome the usual high-frequency restriction associated with absorbing boundary conditions in general variable potential problems. The resulting fast computational algorithm for absorbing boundary conditions ensures accuracy over the entire frequency range.

Abstract:We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a spatially rough potential, a key equation in the mathematical setup for nonlinear Anderson localization. Our study comprises two main parts: new optimal results on the well-posedness analysis on the PDE level, and subsequently a new efficient numerical method, its convergence analysis and simulations that illustrate our analytical results. In the analysis part, our results focus on understanding how the regularity of the solution is influenced by the regularity of the potential, where we provide quantitative and explicit characterizations. Ill-posedness results are also established to demonstrate the sharpness of the obtained regularity characterizations and to indicate the minimum regularity required from the potential for the NLS to be solvable. Building upon the obtained regularity results, we design an appropriate numerical discretization for the model and establish its convergence with an optimal error bound. The numerical experiments in the end not only verify the theoretical regularity results, but also confirm the established convergence rate of the proposed scheme. Additionally, a comparison with other existing schemes is conducted to demonstrate the better accuracy of our new scheme in the case of a rough potential.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a time splitting scheme for the Schrodinger equation in the presence of electromagnetic eld in the semi-classical regime, where the wave function propagates O(e) oscillations in space and time. With the operator splitting technique, the time evolution of the Schrodinger equation is divided into three parts: the kinetic step, the convection step and the potential step. The kinetic and the potential steps can be handled by the classical time-splitting spectral method. For the convection step, we propose a semi-Lagrangian method in order to allow large time steps. We prove the unconditional stability conditions with spatially variant external vector potentials, and the error estimate in the l approximation of the wave function. By comparing with the semi-classical limit, the classical Liouville equation in the Wigner framework, we show that this method is able to capture the correct physical observables with time step ∆t ≫ e. We implement this method numerically for both one dimensional and two dimensional cases to verify that e−independent time steps can indeed be taken in computing physical observables.
Generalization of splitting methods based on modified potentials to nonlinear evolution equations of parabolic and Schrödinger type

Abstract:The present work is concerned with the extension of modified potential operator splitting methods to specific classes of nonlinear evolution equations. The considered partial differential equations of Schr{ö}dinger and parabolic type comprise the Laplacian, a potential acting as multiplication operator, and a cubic nonlinearity. Moreover, an invariance principle is deduced that has a significant impact on the efficient realisation of the resulting modified operator splitting methods for the Schr{ö}dinger case.} Numerical illustrations for the time-dependent Gross--Pitaevskii equation in the physically most relevant case of three space dimensions and for its parabolic counterpart related to ground state and excited state computations confirm the benefits of the proposed fourth-order modified operator splitting method in comparison with standard splitting methods. The presented results are novel and of particular interest from both, a theoretical perspective to inspire future investigations of modified operator splitting methods for other classes of nonlinear evolution equations and a practical perspective to advance the reliable and efficient simulation of Gross--Pitaevskii systems in real and imaginary time.

Abstract:In this paper we numerically solve the time dependent Schrödinger equation for scenarios using wave packets. These examples include the free wave packet, which we use to show the difference between group and phase velocities, the packet in a harmonic oscillator potential with non-trivial initial conditions in one and two dimensions, which is compared with their classical analogs to show how Ehrenfest theorem holds. We also include simulations of the diffraction through the single and double slit potentials, the refraction with a step potential and the dispersion by a central potential. The aim of this paper is to illustrate with simulations, nowadays easy to implement, scenarios that can help explaining the basics of the wave-particle duality.

Abstract:We present a simple and efficient approach for extracting the final state-specific information in time-dependent quantum wave packet calculations for scattering or half-scattering problems without the artificial boundary reflection. The method, which is based on the compactness of the interaction picture wavefunction, employs an optical potential to absorb the flux of the Schrödinger picture wavefunction near the edge of the boundary. However, the absorption does not disturb the interaction picture wavefunction which is used to compute the stable product state distributions. Two numerical examples using this approach are given. One is for a model collinear photodissociation of CH3I involving nonadiabatic coupling, and the other is for a rigid rotor scattered off a flat surface.

Abstract:We perform a Gabor analysis for a large class of evolution equations with constant coefficients. We show that the corresponding propagators have a very sparse Gabor matrix, displaying off-diagonal exponential decay. The results apply to hyperbolic, weakly hyperbolic and parabolic equations. Some numerical experiments are provided.

A Systematic Approximate Method for the Study of Evolution Problem Beyond Rotating Wave Approximation

Abstract:By a model of a two-level particle coupled with boson field, we made it clear that an evolution problem can be solved beyond the rotating wave approximation. We have applied the coherent approximation method, which had been proved to be effective in dealing with stationary state problems of polaron, to the evolution problem of the system mentioned above. The results obtained showed that the coherent approximation method is effective to treat the evolution problem, and, in general cases, the non-rotating wave terms in Hamiltonian should not be ignored. Our results may provide a deep physical insight for further experiments to test the effects of non-rotating wave terms.

Abstract:In this paper, using the Darboux transformation, we demonstrate the generation of first order breather and higher-order rogue waves from a generalized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with several higher-order nonlinear effects representing femtosecond pulse propagation through nonlinear silica fiber. The same nonlinear evolution equation can also describes the soliton-type nonlinear excitations in classical Heisenberg spin chain. Such solutions have a parameter $\gamma_1$, denoting the strength of the higher-order effects. From the numerical plots of the rational solutions, the compression effects of the breather and rogue waves produced by $\gamma_1$ are discussed in detail.

Then for sufficiently smalle > 0, we obtain positive solutions of this system which concentrate around local minima of the potentials as e → 0. The novelty is that the potentials a and b may vanish at someplace and decay to 0 at infinity.

Abstract:The Schrodinger equation based on the de Broglie wave is the most fundamental equation of the quantum mechanics. There can be no doubt about it's prediction validity. However, the probabilistic interpretation on the quantum mechanics has insoluble semantic interpretations like reduction of wave packet on observations of physical values. Especially, it is not clear that the wave function which is described by complex function, is whether formality or reality to express the state of particle motion. On this paper, we interpret the wave nature of particle as not the inherency of particle itself, but the motional property of particle in fluctuated space-time due to the kinetic energy and momentum the belief that the kinetic energy and momentum fluctuates the microscopic space-time, and the particle move through the fluctuated space-time adversely. Then, through the particle motion in the Euclidean space-time, the particle will be recognized as if it has the wave nature. We estimate the governing equation of fluctuations of microscopic space-time based on the macroscopic law of motion. On this paper, the equivalence between the governing equation and the Schrodinger equation is indicated.
