Abstract:We develop a theory of oscillatory integrals whose phase is given by the trace of a polynomial over an algebraic number field. We present an application to the singular integral for a version of Tarry's problem for algebraic integers.

Abstract:The main theme of this paper is that singular automorphic forms on classical groups are given by theta series liftings. We establish several inequalities relating the automorphic multiplicities of a given representation and that of its abstract theta lift. Our methods allow one to lift noncuspidal, square integrable automorphic forms when the dual pair involved is in the stable range. In this way we construct new families of singular automorphic forms, many of which are clearly unipotent. In fact, starting from one-dimensional representations and repeating the procedure (of lifting in the stable range), one may obtain all automorphic forms which are quadratic unipotent in the sense of Moeglin.

After recalling some classical results and their constructive counterparts, we showcase the functionality in two examples related to the investigation of the Cohen-Lenstra heuristic for quadratic fields and the Galois module structure of rings of integers.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider estimates for the two-dimensional oscillatory integrals. The phase function of the oscillatory integrals is the linear perturbation of a function having $D$ type singularities. We consider estimates for the oscillatory integrals in terms of the Randol's type maximal functions. We obtain a sharp $L^p_{loc}$ estimates for the Randol's maximal functions. Moreover, we investigate the sharp exponent $p$ depending on whether, the phase function has linearly adapted coordinates system or not.

Abstract:We consider a class of Hörmander-type oscillatory integral operators in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n \geq 3$ odd with real analytic phase. We derive weak conditions on the phase which ensure $L^p$ bounds beyond the universal $p \geq 2 \cdot \frac{n+1}{n-1}$ range guaranteed by Stein's oscillatory integral theorem. This expands and elucidates pioneering work of Bourgain from the early 1990s. We also consider a closely related class of variable coefficient Schrödinger propagator-type operators, and show that the corresponding theory differs significantly from that of the Hörmander-type operators. The main ingredient in the proof is a curved Kakeya/Nikodym maximal function estimate. This is established by combining the polynomial method with certain uniform sublevel set estimates for real analytic functions. The sublevel set estimates are the main novelty in the argument and can be interpreted as a form of quantification of linear independence in the $C^{\omega}$ category.

Abstract:Intractable phase dynamics often challenge our understanding of complex oscillatory systems, hindering the exploration of synchronisation, chaos, and emergent phenomena across diverse fields. We introduce a novel conceptual framework for phase analysis, using the osculating circle to construct a co-moving coordinate system, which allows us to define a unique phase of the system. This coordinate independent, geometrical technique allows dissecting intricate local phase dynamics, even in regimes where traditional methods fail. Our methodology enables the analysis of a wider range of complex systems which were previously deemed intractable.

Abstract:We review three different approaches to polynomial symmetry algebras underlying superintegrable systems in Darboux spaces. The first method consists of using deformed oscillator algebra to obtain finite-dimensional representations of quadratic algebras. This allow one to gain information on the spectrum of the superintegrable systems. The second method has similarities with the induced module construction approach in the context of Lie algebras and can be used to construct infinite dimensional representations of the symmetry algebras. Explicit construction of these representations is a non-trivial task due to the non-linearity of the polynomial algebras. This method allows the construction of states of the superintegrable systems beyond the reach of separation of variables. As a result, we are able to construct a large number of states in terms of Airy, Bessel and Whittaker functions which would be difficult to obtain in other ways. We also discuss the third approach which is based on the notion of commutants of subalgebras in the enveloping algebra of a Poisson algebra or a Lie algebra. This allows us to discover new superintegrable models in the Darboux spaces and to construct their integrals and symmetry algebras via polynomials in the enveloping algebras.

Structure and Strength of Dislocation Junctions: An Atomic Level Analysis

Abstract:The quasicontinuum method is used to simulate three-dimensional Lomer-Cottrell junctions both in the absence and in the presence of an applied stress. The simulations show that this type of junction is destroyed by an unzipping mechanism in which the dislocations that form the junction are gradually pulled apart along the junction segment. The calculated critical stress needed for breaking the junction is comparable to that predicted by line tension models. The simulations also demonstrate a strong influence of the initial dislocation line directions on the breaking mechanism, an effect that is neglected in the macroscopic treatment of the hardening effect of junctions.

Abstract:We discuss the phenomenon where an element in a number field is not integrally represented by a given positive definite quadratic form, but becomes integrally represented by this form over a totally real extension of odd degree. We prove that this phenomenon happens infinitely often, and, conversely, establish finiteness results about the situation when the quadratic form is fixed.

Abstract:In the case of quadratic forms over a field, it is well-known that the prime spectrum of the Witt ring and the space of orderings of the field determine one another, through associated signature maps. We show that a sililar relation holds for hermitian forms over algebras with involution of the first kind, replacing the usual Witt ring with the mixed Witt ring of such an algebra.

Abstract:We describe an elementary method for bounding a one-dimensional oscillatory integral in terms of an associated non-oscillatory integral. The bounds obtained are efficient in an appropriate sense and behave well under perturbations of the phase. As a consequence, for an $n$-dimensional oscillatory integral with a critical point at the origin, we may apply the one-dimensional estimates in the radial direction and then integrate the result, thereby obtaining natural bounds for the $n$-dimensional oscillatory integral in terms of the measures of the sublevel sets associated with the phase. To illustrate, we provide several classes of examples, including situations where the phase function has a critical point at which it vanishes to infinite order.

Arithmetic Problems in Cubic and Quartic Function Fields

Abstract:One of the main themes in this thesis is the description of the signature of both the infinite place and the finite places in cubic function fields of any characteristic and quartic function fields of characteristic at least 5. For these purposes, we provide a new theory which can be applied to cubic and quartic function fields and to even higher dimensional function fields. One of the striking advantages of this theory to other existing methods is that is does not use the concept of p-adic completions and we can dispense of Cardano's formulae. Another key result comprises the construction of cubic function fields of unit rank 1 and 2, with an obvious fundamental system. One of the main ingredients for such constructions is the definition of the maximum value. This definition is new and very prolific in the context of finding fundamental systems. We conclude the thesis with miscellaneous results on the divisor class number h, including a new approach for finding divisors of h.
