Abstract:The connections between Maxwell's equations and symplectic matrix are studied. First, we analyze the continuous-time Maxwell's differential equations in free space and verify its time evolution matrix (TEMA) is symplectic-unitary matrix for complex space or symplectic-orthogonal matrix for real space. Second, the spatial differential operators are discretized by pseudo-spectral (PS) approach with collocated grid and by finite-difference (FD) method with staggered grid. For the PS approach, the TEMA conserves symplectic-unitary property. For the FD method, the TEMA conserves symplectic-orthogonal property. Finally, symplectic integration scheme is used in the time direction. In particular, we find the symplectiness of the TEMA also can be conserved. The mathematical proofs presented are helpful for deep researching the symplectic PSTD approach and the symplectic FDTD method.

Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:In this work, a conformable singular system with second-class constraints is discussed. The conformable Poisson bracket (CDB) of two functions is defined. and, the Dirac theory is developed to be applicable to conformable singular systems. In addition, to demonstrate the theory an illustrative example is given and solved, the results are found to be in agreement with ref \cite{rabei1992hamilton} when $\alpha=1$.

Abstract:A general approach is presented to describing nonlinear classical Maxwell electrodynamics with conformal symmetry. We introduce generalized nonlinear constitutive equations, expressed in terms of constitutive tensors dependent on conformal-invariant functionals of the field strengths. This allows a characterization of Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian theories. We obtain a general formula for possible Lagrangian densities in nonlinear conformal-invariant electrodynamics. This generalizes the standard Lagrangian of classical linear electrodynamics so as to preserve the conformal symmetry.

Abstract:Conformal electrodynamics is a particularly interesting example of power Maxwell non-linear electrodynamics, designed to possess conformal symmetry in all dimensions. In this paper, we propose a regularized version of Conformal electrodynamics, minimally regularizing the field of a point charge at the origin by breaking the conformal invariance of the theory with a dimensionfull "Born-Infeld-like" parameter. In four dimensions the new theory reduces to the recently studied Regularized Maxwell electrodynamics, distinguished by its "Maxwell-like" solutions for accelerated and slowly rotating black hole spacetimes. Focusing on three dimensions, we show that the new theory shares many of the properties of its four-dimensional cousin, including the existence of the charged C-metric solution (currently unknown in the Maxwell theory).

Abstract:In this work, we extend the time-dependent conformable Schrödinger equation for a fractional dimensional system of N spatial coordinates to be used as an effective description of anisotropic and confined systems. A specific example is looked at in free particle conformable Schrödinger wave mechanics, particularly in N-Polar coordinates and N-Cartesian coordinates systems. The quantities of the conformable form are found to be in exact agreement with the corresponding traditional quantities when $\beta=1$

Abstract:In 1909 the brothers E. and F. Cosserat discovered a new nonlinear group theoretical approach to elasticity (EL), with the only experimental need to measure the EL constants. In a modern language, their idea has been to use the nonlinear Spencer sequence instead of the nonlinear Janet sequence for the Lie groupoid defining the group of rigid motions of space. Following H. Weyl, our purpose is to compute for the first time the nonlinear Spencer sequence for the Lie groupoid defining the conformal group of space-time in order to provide the mathematical foundations of electromagnetism (EM), with the only experimental need to measure the EM constant in vacuum. With a manifold of dimension n, the difficulty is to deal with the n nonlinear transformations that have been called “elations” by E. Cartan in 1922. Using the fact that dimension n=4 has very specific properties for the computation of the Spencer cohomology, we prove that there is thus no conceptual difference between the Cosserat EL field or induction equations and the Maxwell EM field or induction equations. As a byproduct, the well known field/matter couplings (piezzoelectricity, photoelasticity, streaming birefringence, …) can be described abstractly, with the only experimental need to measure the corresponding coupling constants. The main consequence of this paper is the need to revisit the mathematical foundations of gauge theory (GT) because we have proved that EM was depending on the conformal group and not on U(1), with a shift by one step to the left in the physical interpretation of the differential sequence involved.

Abstract:We consider field localizing and concentration of electromagnetic waves governed by the time-harmonic anisotropic Maxwell system in a bounded domain. It is shown that there always exist certain boundary inputs which can generate electromagnetic fields with energy localized/concentrated in a given subdomain while nearly vanishing in another given subdomain. The theoretical results may have potential applications in telecommunication, inductive charging and medical therapy. We also derive a related Runge approximation result for the time-harmonic anisotropic Maxwell system with partial boundary data.
Conformal Scattering of Maxwell Potentials

Abstract:We construct a complete conformal scattering theory for finite energy Maxwell potentials on a class of curved, asymptotically flat spacetimes with prescribed smoothness of null infinity and a non-zero ADM mass. In order to define the full set of scattering data, we construct a Lorenz-like gauge which makes the field equations hyperbolic and non-singular up to null infinity, and reduces to an intrinsically solvable ODE on null infinity. We develop a method to solve the characteristic Cauchy problem from this scattering data based on a theorem of Hörmander. In the case of Minkowski space, we further investigate an alternative formulation of the scattering theory by using the Morawetz vector field instead of the usual timelike Killing vector field.

Price Variations in a Stock Market With Many Agents

Abstract:Large variations in stock prices happen with sufficient frequency to raise doubts about existing models, which all fail to account for non-Gaussian statistics. We construct simple models of a stock market, and argue that the large variations may be due to a crowd effect, where agents imitate each other's behavior. The variations over different time scales can be related to each other in a systematic way, similar to the Levy stable distribution proposed by Mandelbrot to describe real market indices. In the simplest, least realistic case, exact results for the statistics of the variations are derived by mapping onto a model of diffusing and annihilating particles, which has been solved by quantum field theory methods. When the agents imitate each other and respond to recent market volatility, different scaling behavior is obtained. In this case the statistics of price variations is consistent with empirical observations. The interplay between ``rational'' traders whose behavior is derived from fundamental analysis of the stock, including dividends, and ``noise traders'', whose behavior is governed solely by studying the market dynamics, is investigated. When the relative number of rational traders is small, ``bubbles'' often occur, where the market price moves outside the range justified by fundamental market analysis. When the number of rational traders is larger, the market price is generally locked within the price range they define.

Conformal magnetic effect at the edge: a numerical study in scalar QED

Abstract:Quantum polarization effects associated with the conformal anomaly in a static magnetic field background may generate a transverse electric current in the vacuum. The current may be produced either in an unbounded curved spacetime or in a flat spacetime in a physically bounded system. In both cases, the magnitude of the electric current is proportional to the beta-function associated with renormalization of the electric charge. In our article, we investigate the electric current density induced by the magnetic field in the vicinity of a Dirichlet boundary in the scalar QED. Using first-principle lattice simulations we show that the electric current, generated by this `conformal magnetic effect at the edge' (CMEE), is well described by the conformal anomaly provided the conformal symmetry is classically unbroken. Outside of the conformal limit, the current density is characterized by an anomalous power law near the edge of the system and by an exponential suppression of the current far away from the edge.

Abstract:The system of Maxwell equations with an initial condition in a vacuum is solved in a cylindrical coordinate system. It derives the cylindrical transverse electromagnetic wave mode in which the electric field and magnetic field are not in phase. Such electromagnetic wave can generate and exist in actual application, and there is no violation of the law of conservation of energy during the electromagnetic field interchanges.

Abstract:In order to get numerical solution of Maxwell’s equations which plays an important role in the electric-magnetic fields, a new anisotropic nonconforming mixed finite element method is presented. Based on special construction of the element pair and some novel techniques, error estimates of electric and magnetic fields in L2 norm are obtained under anisotropic meshes. The convergence results demonstrate the validity of the anisotropic nonconforming mixed element method for solving Maxwell’s equations.

Abstract:The electromagnetic theory is considered in the framework of the generally covariant approach, that is applied to the analysis of electromagnetism in noninertial coordinate and frame systems. The special-relat\-ivistic formulation of Maxwell's electrodynamics arises in the flat Minkowski spacetime when the general coordinate transformations are restricted to a class of transformations preserving the Minkowski line element. The particular attention is paid to the analysis of the electromagnetism in the noninertial rotating reference system. For the latter case, the general stationary solution of the Maxwell equations in the absence of the electric current is constructed in terms of the two scalar functions satisfying the Poisson and the biharmonic equations with an arbitrary charge density as a matter source. The classic problem of Schiff is critically revisited.

Abstract:In this study, we apply a novel format of Maxwell's equations in SI Units for analyzing electromagnetic fields in conical cavities, with a special focus on time-domain analysis. This unique approach aligns the dimensions of electric (E) and magnetic (H) fields as inverse meters, thereby facilitating theoretical investigations into complex geometrical field behaviors. Our primary focus is on deriving evolutionary equations for electromagnetic fields within conical structures. Additionally, this study serves as a stepping stone for future in-depth research into the mechanical properties of electromagnetic fields, particularly due to the unified dimensional approach of E and H fields. This method is expected to provide more insightful perspectives in understanding the dynamics of electromagnetic fields in conical cavities. The implications of this research extend to practical applications, notably in the design and analysis of microwave resonant cavities and conical antennas, enhancing our comprehension of electromagnetic phenomena in specialized structures within the broader scope of electrodynamics.

Abstract:A covariant formalism is used in order to examine the status of Maxwell equations and to unify the concept of balances, for all chemical engineering applications in relation with electrodynamics. The resulting formal structure serves as a discussion in studying the determinism of electromagnetic systems, and examining the theoretical foundations for a general classification of chemical engineering applications when non-conservative forces are concerned. A strategy for modeling such applications is then sketched and the balances for the main conserved and non-conserved extensive quantities are then summarized in their covariant and classical forms.
