Abstract:For $C^{1+}$ maps, possibly non-invertible and with singularities, we prove that each homoclinic class of an adapted hyperbolic measure carries at most one adapted hyperbolic measure of maximal entropy. We then apply this to study the finiteness/uniqueness of such measures in several different settings: finite horizon dispersing billiards, codimension one partially hyperbolic endomorphisms with "large" entropy, robustly non-uniformly hyperbolic volume-preserving endomorphisms as in Andersson-Carrasco-Saghin, and strongly transitive non-uniformly expanding maps.

Abstract: In this article we prove that for a $C^{1+\alpha}$ diffeomorphism on a compact Riemannian manifold, if there is a hyperbolic ergodic measure whose support is not uniformly hyperbolic, then the topological entropy of the set of irregular points that are not uniformly hyperbolic is larger than or equal to the metric entropy of the hyperbolic ergodic measure. In the process of proof, we give an abstract general mechanism to study topological entropy of irregular points provided that the system has a sequence of nondecreasing invariant compact subsets such that every subsystem has shadowing property and is transitive.
Katok's entropy conjecture near real and complex hyperbolic metrics

Abstract:We show that, given a real or complex hyperbolic metric $g_0$ on a closed manifold $M$ of dimension $n\geq 3$, there exists a neighborhood $\mathcal U$ of $g_0$ in the space of negatively curved metrics such that for any $g\in \mathcal U$, the topological entropy and Liouville entropy of $g$ coincide if and only if $g$ and $g_0$ are homothetic. This provides a partial answer to Katok's entropy rigidity conjecture. As a direct consequence of our theorem, we obtain a local rigidity result of the hyperbolic rank near complex hyperbolic metrics.

Abstract:We prove that $C^2$ generic hyperbolic Mañé sets contain a periodic periodic orbit. In dimension 2, adding a result by Contreras, Figalli, Rifford, which states that $C^2$ generic Mañé sets are hyperbolic; we obtain Mañé's Conjecture for surfaces in the $C^2$ topology: Given a Tonelli Lagrangian $L$ on a compact surface $M$ there is a $C^2$ open and dense set of functions $f:M\to\mathbb{R}$ such that the Mañé set of the Lagrangian $L+f$ is a hyperbolic periodic orbit.

Abstract:Let $(M,g_0)$ be a closed oriented hyperbolic manifold of dimension at least $3$. By the volume entropy inequality of G. Besson, G. Courtois and S. Gallot, for any Riemannian metric $g$ on $M$ with same volume as $g_0$, its volume entropy $h(g)$ satisfies $h(g)\geq n-1$ with equality only when $g$ is isometric to $g_0$. We show that the hyperbolic metric $g_0$ is stable in the following sense: if $g_i$ is a sequence of Riemaniann metrics on $M$ of same volume as $g_0$ and if $h(g_i)$ converges to $n-1$, then there are smooth subsets $Z_i\subset M$ such that both $\mathrm{Vol}(Z_i,g_i)$ and $\mathrm{Area}(\partial Z_i,g_i)$ tend to $0$, and $(M\setminus Z_i,g_i)$ converges to $(M,g_0)$ in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff topology. The proof relies on showing that any spherical Plateau solution for $M$ is intrinsically isomorphic to $(M,\frac{(n-1)^2}{4n} g_0)$.

Abstract:Let $(M^{n},g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with $Ric\geq-(n-1) $. It is well known that the bottom of spectrum $\lambda_{0}$ of its unverversal covering satisfies $\lambda_{0}\leq(n-1) ^{2}/4 $. We prove that equality holds iff $M$ is hyperbolic. This follows from a sharp estimate for the Kaimanovich entropy.
Zero entropy on entire Grauert tubes

Abstract:On a real analytic Riemannian manifold a Grauert tube is an uniquely adapted complex structure defined on the tangent bundle. It is called entire if it may be defined on the whole tangent bundle. Here, we show that the geodesic flow of an analytic manifold with entire Grauert tube has zero topological entropy. Several consequences then follow. We find that Grauert tubes of convex analytic hypersurfaces of ${\bf R}^3$ are generically finite. We give a complete classification of 3-manifolds with entire Grauert tube, showing that these are precisely the 3-manifolds that admit good complexifications. Assuming a manifold has entire Grauert tube, we offer classification statements for several families of smooth 4-manifolds, determine all such simply connected 5-manifolds, and offer new topological restrictions for certain manifolds with infinite fundamental groups. Using these results we present an example of a simply connected and rationally elliptic 5-manifold which nonetheless does not admit any metric with entire Grauert tube.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce the notion of entropy at infinity, and define a wide class of noncompact manifolds with negative curvature, those which admit a critical gap between entropy at infinity and topological entropy. We call them strongly positively recurrent manifolds (SPR), and provide many examples. We show that dynamically, they behave as compact manifolds. In particular, they admit a finite measure of maximal entropy. Using the point of view of currents at infinity, we show that on these SPR manifolds the topological entropy of the geodesic flow varies in a C 1 -way along (uniformly) C 1 -perturbations of the metric. This result generalizes former work of Katok (1982) and Katok-Knieper-Weiss (1991) in the compact case.

Abstract:Harmonic manifolds of hypergeometric type form a class of non-compact harmonic manifolds that includes rank one symmetric spaces of non-compact type and Damek-Ricci spaces. When normalizing the metric of a harmonic manifold of hypergeometric type to satisfy the Ricci curvature $\mathrm{Ric} = -(n-1)$, we show that the volume entropy of this manifold satisfies a certain inequality. Additionally, we show that manifolds yielding the upper bound of volume entropy are only real hyperbolic spaces with sectional curvature $-1$, while examples of Damek-Ricci spaces yielding the lower bound exist in only four cases.

Abstract:Let (X, T) be a TDS and M(X) the space of all Borel probability measures on X equipped with the weak* topology. (X, T) is topo-null if (X, T) has zero topological sequence entropy. Given a pseudo-metric space and a self-map, the topological sequence entropy was studied for a special class of pseudo-metrics induced by continuous real-valued functions on the space. As an application, it was proved that, given a sequence A(∈)Z+, if X is zero-dimensional then (X, T) has zero topological entropy along A if and only if (M (X), T) has zero topological entropy along A. In particular, if X is zero-dimensional then (X,T) is topo-null if and only if (M (X), T) is topo-null.

Abstract:In this note, a notion of generalized topological entropy for arbitrary subsets of the space of all sequences in a compact topological space is introduced. It is shown that for a continuous map on a compact space, the generalized topological entropy of the set of all orbits of the map coincides with the classical topological entropy of the map. Some basic properties of this new notion of entropy are considered; among them are the behavior of the entropy with respect to disjoint union, cartesian product, component restriction and dilation, shift mapping, and some continuity properties with respect to Vietoris topology. As an example, it is shown that any self-similar structure of a fractal given by a finite family of contractions gives rise to a notion of intrinsic topological entropy for subsets of the fractal. A generalized notion of Bowen’s entropy associated to any increasing sequence of compatible semimetrics on a topological space is introduced and some of its basic properties are considered. Abstract:In this paper we establish a dichotomy for the ergodic measures of maximal entropy for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional compact center leaves which are virtually skew products over (transitive) Anosov homeomorphism. We prove that if the whole manifold is the unique minimal invariant set saturated by unstable foliation, then either there exists a unique measure of maximal entropy which is non-hyperbolic or there are exactly two hyperbolic ergodic measures of maximal entropy.

Abstract:We define the entropy of an infinite family C\mathcal {C} of measurable sets in a probability space, and show that a family has zero entropy if and only if it is totally bounded under the symmetric difference semi-metric. Our principal result is that the mean ergodic theorem holds uniformly for C\mathcal {C} under every ergodic transformation if and only if C\mathcal {C} has zero entropy. When the entropy of C\mathcal {C} is positive, we establish a strong converse showing that the uniform mean ergodic theorem fails generically in every isomorphism class, including the isomorphism classes of Bernoulli transformations. As a corollary of these results, we establish that every strong mixing transformation is uniformly strong mixing on C\mathcal {C} if and only if the entropy of C\mathcal {C} is zero, and we obtain a corresponding result for weak mixing transformations.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable discrete amenable group which acts continuously on a compact metric space $X$ and let $\mu$ be an ergodic $G-$invariant Borel probability measure on $X$. For a fixed tempered Følner sequence $\{F_n\}$ in $G$ with $\lim\limits_{n\rightarrow+\infty}\frac{|F_n|}{\log n}=\infty$, we prove the following variational principle: $$h^B(G_{\mu},\{F_n\})=h_{\mu}(X,G),$$ where $G_{\mu}$ is the set of generic points for $\mu$ with respect to $\{F_n\}$ and $h^B(G_{\mu},\{F_n\})$ is the Bowen topological entropy (along $\{F_n\}$) on $G_{\mu}$. This generalizes the classical result of Bowen in 1973.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact, geodesically complete, locally CAT(0) space such that the universal cover admits a rank one axis. We prove the Bowen-Margulis measure on the space of geodesics is the unique measure of maximal entropy for the geodesic flow, which has topological entropy equal to the critical exponent of the Poincaré series.

Abstract:The notions of entropy sequences and entropy sets are introduced both in topological and measure-theoretical situations. It turns out that a subset is an entropy set if and only if each n-tuple (not on the diagonal) from the set is an entropy n-tuple and that each maximal entropy set is closed. The systems with only one maximal entropy set are characterized. Moreover, it is proved that if a topological system has positive entropy, then there is a maximal entropy set with uncountably many points, and the topological entropy is the supremum of the entropies over all maximal entropy sets. An example with a maximal entropy set containing only two points is given.

Abstract:A toroidal set is a compactum $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ which has a neighbourhood basis of solid tori. We study the topological entropy of toroidal attractors $K$, bounding it from below in terms of purely topological properties of $K$. In particular, we show that for a toroidal set $K$, either any smooth attracting dynamics on $K$ has an entropy at least $\log 2$, or (up to continuation) $K$ admits smooth attracting dynamics which are stationary (hence with a zero entropy).

Abstract:In this paper we study interval maps $f$ with zero topological entropy that are crooked; i.e. whose inverse limit with $f$ as the single bonding map is the pseudo-arc. We show that there are uncountably many pairwise non-conjugate zero entropy crooked interval maps with different sets of fixed points. We also show that there are uncountably many zero entropy crooked maps that are pairwise non-conjugate and have exactly two fixed points. Furthermore, we provide a characterization of crooked interval maps that are under or above the identity diagonal.
