Abstract:Although digitalization of future power grids offer several coordination incentives, the reliability and security of information and communication technologies (ICT) hinders its overall performance. In this paper, we introduce a novel architecture Spike Talk via a unified representation of power and information as a means of data normalization using spikes for coordinated control of microgrids. This grid-edge technology allows each distributed energy resource (DER) to execute decentralized secondary control philosophy independently by interacting among each other using power flow along the tie-lines. Inspired from the field of computational neuroscience, Spike Talk basically builds on a fine-grained parallelism on the information transfer theory in our brains, particularly when neurons (modeled as DERs) transmit information (inferred from power streams measurable at each DER) through synapses (modeled as tie-lines). Not only does Spike Talk simplify and address the current bottlenecks of the cyber-physical architectural operation by dismissing the ICT layer, it provides intrinsic operational and cost-effective opportunities in terms of infrastructure development, computations and modeling. Hence, this paper provides a pedagogic illustration of the key concepts and design theories. Since we focus on coordinated control of microgrids in this paper, the signaling accuracy and system performance is studied for several neural coding schemes responsible for converting the real-valued local measurements into spikes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve are as follows: In the future smart grid, the unreliability and security issues of information and communication technology (ICT) impede its overall performance. Specifically, the current micro - grid coordinated control depends on the ICT layer, which brings about reliability problems such as vulnerability to cyber - attacks, latency, and data loss. In addition, the existing hierarchical architecture increases the modeling complexity and requires an upgrade of the ICT infrastructure to meet the needs of rapid control response. To solve these problems, this paper introduces a new architecture named "Spike Talk", aiming to achieve coordinated control of micro - grids by uniformly representing electricity and information. The main features of Spike Talk include: 1. **Removal of the ICT layer**: By directly using the power flow as a communication medium, the system structure is simplified, and the inconsistencies and vulnerabilities brought by the ICT layer are eliminated. 2. **Event - driven sparse data processing**: Each distributed energy resource (DER) only makes local controller adjustments when a disturbance is detected, thereby reducing the computational burden and communication traffic. 3. **Encoding scheme based on spiking neural networks (SNN)**: Using a method similar to the information transfer between brain neurons, real - valued measurements are converted into sparse binary spikes, which improves signal accuracy and system performance. Through these innovations, Spike Talk not only simplifies the complexity of the existing system but also provides a more efficient and reliable method for micro - grid coordinated control. Specifically, Spike Talk solves the problems in the following ways: - **Simplified modeling**: Without the complex ICT layer, the modeling process of the entire system is simplified. - **Improved reliability**: By directly transmitting information through the physical layer, security risks and latency problems caused by the ICT layer are reduced. - **Reduced computational overhead**: By using sparse data processing and online learning mechanisms, the demand for computational resources is reduced. Therefore, Spike Talk provides a new solution for the future smart grid, especially having significant advantages in dealing with the coordinated control of large - scale distributed energy resources.
