Abstract:We show that any partial ascending HNN extension of a free group embeds in an actual ascending HNN extension of a free group. Moreover, we can ensure that it embeds as the parabolic subgroup of a relatively hyperbolic group.

Abstract:We prove that for a finitely generated group G with a free factor system and an injective endomorphism that preserves the free factor system, the ascending HNN extension of G is hyperbolic relative to a collection of maximal parabolic subgroups. As a corollary, we see that if an injective endomorphism of a finite rank free group F is exponentially growing, the ascending HNN extension of F is relatively hyperbolic.

Abstract:The main result in this paper is the failure of the finitely generated intersection property (FGIP) of ascending HNN extensions of non-cyclic finite rank free groups. This class of group consists of free-by-cyclic groups and properly ascending HNN extensions of free groups. We also give a sufficient condition for the failure of the FGIP in the context of relative hyperbolicity, we apply this to free-by-cyclic groups of exponential growth.

Abstract:A group $G$ is said to have the Howson property (or to be a Howson group) if the intersection of any two finitely generated subgroups of $G$ is finitely generated subgroup. It is proved that descending HNN-extension is not a Howson group under some assumptions satisfied by the base group of HNN-extension. In particular, a result of the paper joined with a Burns - Brunner result (received in 1979) implies that any descending HNN-extension of non-cyclic free group does not have the Howson property.

Abstract:A 1-ended finitely presented group has semistable fundamental group at $\infty$ if it acts geometrically on some (equivalently any) simply connected and locally finite complex $X$ with the property that any two proper rays in $X$ are properly homotopic. If $G$ has semistable fundamental group at $\infty$ then one can unambiguously define the fundamental group at $\infty$ for $G$. The problem, asking if all finitely presented groups have semistable fundamental group at $\infty$ has been studied for over 40 years. If $G$ is an ascending HNN extension of a finitely presented group then indeed, $G$ has semistable fundamental group at $\infty$, but since the early 1980's it has been suggested that the finitely presented groups that are ascending HNN extensions of {\it finitely generated} groups may include a group with non-semistable fundamental group at $\infty$. Ascending HNN extensions naturally break into two classes, those with bounded depth and those with unbounded depth. Our main theorem shows that bounded depth finitely presented ascending HNN extensions of finitely generated groups have semistable fundamental group at $\infty$. Semistability is equivalent to two weaker asymptotic conditions on the group holding simultaneously. We show one of these conditions holds for all ascending HNN extensions, regardless of depth. We give a technique for constructing ascending HNN extensions with unbounded depth. This work focuses attention on a class of groups that may contain a group with non-semistable fundamental group at $\infty$.

Auxiliary free constructions for explicit embeddings of recursive groups

Abstract:An auxiliary free construction based on HNN-extensions and on free product of groups with amalgamated subgroups is suggested, and some of its basic properties are displayed. This construction is a generalization for many of constructions used by Higman in embeddings of recursive groups into finitely presented groups, as well as for constructions we used in research on embeddings of recursive groups recently. Usage of this auxiliary technical construction simplifies some embedding methods for recursive groups. A few other results on specific subgroups of HNN-extensions of groups and of free product of groups with amalgamated subgroup are obtained.

Abstract:For certain HNN extensions including Baumslag-Solitar groups, a treeing is constructed from their certain probability-measure-preserving actions. This is a treeing of a quotient groupoid of the translation groupoid associated with their actions. As its application, for some of those HNN extensions, we show that the kernel of the modular homomorphism is measure equivalent to the direct product of the free group of infinite rank and Z.

Abstract:We show that if a $PD_3$-group $G$ splits as an HNN extension $A*_C\varphi$ where $C$ is a $PD_3$-group then the Poincaré dual in $H^1(G;\mathbb{Z})=Hom(G,\mathbb{Z})$ of the homology class $[C]$ is the epimorphism $f:G\to\mathbb{Z}$ with kernel the normal closure of $A$. We also make several other observations about $PD_3$-groups which split over $PD_2$-groups.

Abstract:Gromov asked whether an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group was always simply connected or had uncountable fundamental group. We prove that Gromov's dichotomy holds for asympotic cones with cut points, as well as, HNN extensions and amalgamated products where the associated subgroups are nicely embedded. We also show a slightly weaker dichotomy for multiple HNN extensions of free groups.

Abstract:We classify finitely generated, residually finite automorphism-induced HNN-extensions in terms of the residual separability of a single associated subgroup. This classification provides a method to construct automorphism-induced HNN-extensions which are not residually finite. We prove that this method can never yield a "new" counter-example to Gromov's conjecture on the residual finiteness of hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We show that there exist finitely generated soluble groups which are not LERF but which do not contain strictly ascending HNN extensions of a cyclic group. This solves Problem 16.2 in the Kourovka notebook. Abstract:Fix an equilateral triangle group $T_i=\langle a, b; a^i, b^i, (ab)^i\rangle$ with $i\geq6$ arbitrary. Our main result is: for every presentation $\mathcal{P}$ of every countable group $Q$ there exists an HNN-extension $T_{\mathcal{P}}$ of $T_i$ such that $\operatorname{Out}(T_{\mathcal{P}})\cong Q$. We construct the HNN-extensions explicitly, and examples are given. The class of groups constructed have nice categorical and residual properties. In order to prove our main result we give a method for recognising malnormal subgroups of small cancellation groups, and we introduce the concept of "malcharacteristic" subgroups.

Abstract:Let be a group, let be an isomorphism of onto a subgroup of , and let be a descending HNN-extension of corresponding to . The potency of is not inherited by even in the simplest case, when is an infinite cyclic group. We prove that if is a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group (a polycyclic group); then the index of in is finite and is -potent (virtually -potent), where is the set of all primes greater than . We also prove some generalizations of this assertion. Some of the results of this work on the potency of descending HNN-extensions are analogs of the well-known theorems on the residual finiteness of the HNN-extensions.
