Abstract:We consider solutions to degenerate anisotropic elliptic equations in order to study their regularity. In particular we establish second-order estimates and enclose regularity results for the stress field. All our results are new even in the euclidean case.

Abstract:We consider local weak solutions of widely degenerate or singular elliptic PDEs of the type \begin{equation*} -\,\mathrm{div}\left((\vert Du\vert-\lambda)_{+}^{p-1}\frac{Du}{\vert Du\vert}\right)=f \,\,\,\,\,\,\, \text{in}\,\,\Omega, \end{equation*} where $\Omega$ is an open subset of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq2$, $\lambda$ is a positive constant and $(\,\cdot\,)_{+}$ stands for the positive part. We establish some higher differentiability results, under essentially sharp conditions on the datum $f$. For $\lambda=0$, our results give back those contained in [12, 25].

Abstract:We deal with boundary value problems for second-order nonlinear elliptic equations in divergence form, which emerge as Euler-Lagrange equations of integral functionals of the Calculus of Variations built upon possibly anisotropic norms of the gradient of trial functions. Integrands with non polynomial growth are included in our discussion. The $W^{1,2}$-regularity of the stress-field associated with solutions, namely the nonlinear expression of the gradient subject to the divergence operator, is established under the weakest possible assumption that the datum on the right-hand side of the equation is a merely $L^2$-function. Global regularity estimates are offered in domains enjoying minimal assumptions on the boundary. They depend on the weak curvatures of the boundary via either their degree of integrability or an isocapacitary inequality. By contrast, none of these assumptions is needed in the case of convex domains. An explicit estimate for the constants appearing in the relevant estimates is exhibited in terms of the Lipschitz characteristic of the domains, when their boundary is endowed with Hölder continuous curvatures.

Abstract:We consider solutions to $$ - \Delta_{p} u = f(x) \quad \text{in } \Omega\, ,$$ when $p$ approaches the semilinear limiting case $p=2$ and we get third order estimates. As a consequence we deduce improved regularity properties of the stress field.

Optimal second order boundary regularity for solutions to $p$-Laplace equations

Abstract:Solutions to $p$-Laplace equations are not, in general, of class $C^2$. The study of Sobolev regularity of the second derivatives is, therefore, a crucial issue. An important contribution by Cianchi and Maz'ya shows that, if the source term is in $L^2$, then the field $|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u$ is in $W^{1,2}$. The $L^2$-regularity of the source term is also a necessary condition. Here, under suitable assumptions, we obtain sharp second order estimates, thus proving the optimal regularity of the vector field $|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u$, up to the boundary.

A systematic approach on the second order regularity of solutions to the general parabolic $p$-Laplace equation

Abstract:We study a general form of a degenerate or singular parabolic equation $$ u_t-|Du|^{\gamma}\big(\Delta u+(p-2)\Delta_\infty^Nu\big)=0 $$ that generalizes both the standard parabolic $p$-Laplace equation and the normalized version that arises from stochastic game theory. We develop a systematic approach to study second order Sobolev regularity and show that $D^2u$ exists as a function and belongs to $L^2_{\text loc}$ for a certain range of parameters. In this approach proving the estimate boils down to verifying that a certain coefficient matrix is positive definite. As a corollary we obtain, under suitable assumptions, that a viscosity solution has a Sobolev time derivative belonging to $L^2_{\text loc}$.

Abstract:We study a general class of parabolic equations $$ u_t-|Du|^\gamma\big(\Delta u+(p-2) \Delta_\infty^N u\big)=0, $$ which can be highly degenerate or singular. This class contains as special cases the standard parabolic $p$-Laplace equation and the normalized version that arises from stochastic game theory. Utilizing the systematic approach developed in our previous work we establish second order Sobolev regularity together with a priori estimates and improved range of parameters. In addition we derive second order Sobolev estimate for a nonlinear quantity. This quantity contains many useful special cases. As a corollary we also obtain that a viscosity solution has locally $L^2$-integrable Sobolev time derivative.

Abstract:We carry on the investigation started in [2] about the regularity of weak solutions to the strongly degenerate parabolic equation \[ u_{t}-\mathrm{div}\left[(\vert Du\vert-1)_{+}^{p-1}\frac{Du}{\vert Du\vert}\right]=f\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\mathrm{in}\,\,\Omega_{T}=\Omega\times(0,T), \] where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq2$, $p\geq2$ and $\left(\,\cdot\,\right)_{+}$ stands for the positive part. Here, we weaken the assumption on the right-hand side, by assuming that $f\in L_{loc}^{p'}\left(0,T;B_{p',\infty,loc}^{\alpha}\left(\Omega\right)\right)$, with $\alpha\in(0,1)$ and $p'=p/(p-1)$. This leads us to obtain higher fractional differentiability results for a function of the spatial gradient $Du$ of the solutions. Moreover, we establish the higher summability of $Du$ with respect to the spatial variable. The main novelty of the above equation is that the structure function satisfies standard ellipticity and growth conditions only outside the unit ball centered at the origin. We would like to point out that the main result of this paper can be considered, on the one hand, as the parabolic counterpart of an elliptic result contained in [1], and on the other hand as the fractional version of some results established in [2].

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to establish regularity for weak solutions to the nondiagonal quasilinear degenerate elliptic systems related to Hörmander's vector fields, where the coefficients are bounded with vanishing mean oscillation. We first prove $L^p$($p \ge 2$) estimates for gradients of weak solutions by using a priori estimates and a known reverse Hölder inequality, and consider regularity to the corresponding nondiagonal homogeneous degenerate elliptic systems. Then we get higher Morrey and Campanato estimates for gradients of weak solutions to original systems and Hölder estimates for weak solutions.

Abstract:We obtain some regularity results for solutions to vectorial $p$-Laplace equations $$ -{\boldsymbol \Delta}_p{\boldsymbol u}=-\operatorname{\bf div}(|D{\boldsymbol u}|^{p-2}D{\boldsymbol u}) = {\boldsymbol f}(x,{\boldsymbol u})\,\, \mbox{ in $\Omega$}\,.$$ More precisely we address the issue of second order estimates for the stress field. As a consequence of our regularity results we deduce a weighted Sobolev inequality that leads to weak comparison principles. As a corollary we run over the moving plane technique to deduce symmetry and monotonicity results for the solutions, under suitable assumptions.

Abstract:We consider Orlicz--Laplace equation $-div(\frac{\varphi'(|\nabla u|)}{|\nabla u|}\nabla u)=f$ where $\varphi$ is an Orlicz function and either $f=0$ or $f\in L^\infty$. We prove local second order regularity results for the weak solutions $u$ of the Orlicz--Laplace equation. More precisely, we show that if $\psi$ is another Orlicz function that is close to $\varphi$ in a suitable sense, then $\frac{\psi'(|\nabla u|)}{|\nabla u|}\nabla u\in W^{1,2}_{loc}$. This work contributes to the building up of quantitative second order Sobolev regularity for solutions of nonlinear equations.

The feature of this study is the inclusion of a possibly singular gradient-dependent term $\Psi(u,\nabla u)=\sum_{j=1}^N |u|^{\theta_j-2}u\, |\partial_j u|^{q_j}$, where $\theta_j>0$ and $0\leq q_j<p_j$ for $1\leq j\leq N$. Abstract:We are interested in the regularity of weak solutions u to the elliptic equation in divergence form as in (1.1), and more precisely in their local boundedness and their local Lipschitz continuity under general growth conditions , the so called - growth conditions , as in (1.2) and (1.3) below. We found a unique set of assumptions to get all of these regularity properties at the same time; in the meantime we also found the way to treat a more general context, with explicit dependence on , in addition to the gradient variable . These aspects require particular attention, due to the -context, with some differences and new difficulties compared to the standard case .

Abstract:The main result of the paper is on the continuity of weak solutions of infinitely degenerate quasilinear second order equations. Namely, we show that every weak solution to a certain class of degenerate quasilinear equations is continuous. More precisely, we show that it is Hölder continuous with respect to a certain metric associated to the operator. One of the essential features of this metric is that the metric balls are non doubling with respect to Lebesgue measure. The proof of the continuity together with a recent result by Rios et al. completes the result on hypoellipticity of a class of second order quasilinear infinitely degenerate elliptic operators.

Abstract:Motivated by applications to gas filtration problems, we study the regularity of weak solutions to the strongly degenerate parabolic PDE $u_{t}-\mathrm{div}\left((\vert Du\vert-\nu)_{+}^{p-1}\frac{Du}{\vert Du\vert}\right)=f$ in $\Omega_{T}=\Omega\times(0,T)$, where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq2$, $p\geq2$, $\nu$ is a positive constant and $\left(\,\cdot\,\right)_{+}$ stands for the positive part. Assuming that the datum $f$ belongs to a suitable Lebesgue-Sobolev parabolic space, we establish the Sobolev spatial regularity of a nonlinear function of the spatial gradient of the weak solutions, which in turn implies the existence of the weak time derivative $u_{t}$. The main novelty here is that the structure function of the above equation satisfies standard growth and ellipticity conditions only outside a ball with radius $\nu$ centered at the origin. We would like to point out that the first result obtained here can be considered, on the one hand, as the parabolic counterpart of an elliptic result established in [5], and on the other hand as the extension to a strongly degenerate context of some known results for less degenerate parabolic equations.
