Abstract:Jao & Feiden (<a class="cite" href="#rnaasac053abib2">2020</a>) reported fine features in the Hertzsprung–Russell Diagram (HRD) using data from the Gaia Data Release 2. One prominent low density region was identified just below the M-dwarf gap (Jao et al. <a class="cite" href="#rnaasac053abib3">2018</a>), and many narrow low density stripes were seen throughout the main-sequence. Recently, the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) has been made public, and the main differences between DR2 and EDR3 are (1) the baseline observation, which is extended from 22 months to 34 months, and (2) the photometric system of the G, GBP and GRP (Riello et al. <a class="cite" href="#rnaasac053abib4">2020</a>). Given the high precision of Gaia astrometry and photometry, we explore whether these fine features and as well as the M-dwarf gap are present in EDR3.We apply the same sample selection criteria and 2D Fourier algorithm to the EDR3 data to generate the enhanced HRD. Two enhanced HRDs derived from DR2 and EDR3 data are shown side-by-side in Figure <a href="#rnaasac053af1">1</a>. White–black–white bands in the main-sequence are seen in both plots. This feature is artificial, caused by the modeling of the density distribution within a given color interval. Two dark bands bracket the main-sequence in each plot. These bands correspond to young stars, binaries, and subdwarfs as discussed in Jao & Feiden (<a class="cite" href="#rnaasac053abib2">2020</a>).Figure 1. The approximate locations of K0, M0 and M3 dwarfs are labeled in the bottom of the plot.Download figure:The M-dwarf gap is seen in both HRDs in Figure <a href="#rnaasac053af1">1</a>, and the shape of the gap is preserved in EDR3, including its non-linear morphology in the direction of MG. The gap is still hardly to be seen redder than GBP − GRP = 2.7 in both plots. In addition, both enhanced HRDs show an over density of stars just above the gap. The low density region below the M-dwarf gap is visible in both plots, but we note that the cause of this under dense region is yet to be known. Jao & Feiden (<a class="cite" href="#rnaasac053abib2">2020</a>) also identified many low density stripes throughout the main sequence in DR2. In the middle plot of Figure <a href="#rnaasac053af1">1</a>, these low density stripe features are generally preserved for stars bluer than GBP − GRP ~ 1.8 or M0V in EDR3, but these features in the lower main-sequence (GBP − GRP > 2.8) are not as prominent in EDR3 as they were in DR2. Three highlighted regions are shown in the left and center plots to make comparisons.The right plot in Figure <a href="#rnaasac053af1">1</a> shows the fitted main-sequences as red and blue lines for DR2 and EDR3, respectively. The MG difference between these two data releases () at a given color is shown on top of the right plot. In these two plots, we see that main-sequence stars bluer than 1.8 in DR2 are, on average, brighter by up to 0.07 mag than stars in EDR3. However, stars redder than 1.8 in DR2 are fainter on average than stars in EDR3 by up to 0.07 mag. As discussed in Jao & Feiden (<a class="cite" href="#rnaasac053abib2">2020</a>), these low density stripes are narrow, with a width of about 0.05 mag. Even though the absolute magnitude shift is up to 0.07 mag, these features are still preserved in EDR3 for stars bluer than 1.8. Contrarily, features in the lower main sequence are less noticeable. As for the M-dwarf gap, shown as a short line in the right plot, it is also brighter at a given color in EDR3, and the color-dependence manifests itself as a change in slope of the gap.Differences in the DR2 and EDR3 photometry appear to be related to changes in the Gaia photometric calibration for sources in EDR3. These changes discussed in Riello et al. (<a class="cite" href="#rnaasac053abib4">2020</a>) include (1) re-evaluating crowding status during a transit, (2) re-calibrating background counts from stray light in BP and RP spectra, and (3) re-calibrating the flux and line spread function (one-dimensional equivalent of a PSF) for BP and RP spectra.
