Abstract:The Cayley continuants are referred to the determinants of tridiagonal matrices in connection with the Sylvester continuants. Munarini-Torri found a striking combinatorial interpretation of the Cayley continuants in terms of the joint distribution of the number of odd cycles and the number of even cycles of permutations of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$. In view of a general setting, $r$-regular cycles (with length not divisible by $r$) and $r$-singular cycles (with length divisible by $r$) have been extensively studied largely related to roots of permutations. We introduce the wide band Cayley continuants as an extension of the original Cayley continuants, and we show that they can be interpreted in terms of the joint distribution of the number of $r$-regular cycles and the number of $r$-singular cycles over permutations of $[n]$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores a new concept called "Wide Band Cayley Continuants" and investigates its connection with the joint distribution of specific types of cycles in permutations (whether the cycle length can be divided by a certain integer \(r\)). Specifically, the paper first reviews the classical Cayley continuants and their combinatorial interpretation in permutation theory. Cayley continuants were initially introduced by Cayley to compute Sylvester continuants, and Munarini and Torri found that these continuants can be interpreted as the joint distribution of odd-length cycles and even-length cycles in permutations. The paper introduces the concept of Wide Band Cayley Continuants as a generalization of the original Cayley continuants, considering \(r\)-regular cycles (cycles whose length cannot be divided by \(r\)) and \(r\)-singular cycles (cycles whose length can be divided by \(r\)). The main contribution of the paper is establishing the connection between Wide Band Cayley Continuants and the joint distribution of \(r\)-regular cycles and \(r\)-singular cycles. By introducing a specific type of matrix (\(1, r-1\) banded matrix), the authors define Wide Band Cayley Continuants and prove that they satisfy a third-order recurrence relation. Additionally, the paper provides the exponential generating function for Wide Band Cayley Continuants and demonstrates through combinatorial methods that Wide Band Cayley Continuants can be interpreted as a polynomial representation of the number of \(r\)-regular cycles and \(r\)-singular cycles in permutations. In summary, the goal of this paper is to establish a bridge between Wide Band Cayley Continuants and the statistical properties of specific types of cycles in permutations, thereby providing a new perspective for understanding these mathematical objects.
