Abstract:3D Euclidean symmetry equivariant neural networks have demonstrated notable success in modeling complex physical systems. We introduce a framework for relaxed $E(3)$ graph equivariant neural networks that can learn and represent symmetry breaking within continuous groups. Building on the existing e3nn framework, we propose the use of relaxed weights to allow for controlled symmetry breaking. We show empirically that these relaxed weights learn the correct amount of symmetry breaking.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of modeling symmetry breaking in physical systems. Specifically, existing 3D Euclidean symmetry-equivariant neural networks (E(3)NNs) have achieved significant success in simulating complex physical systems, but these models perform poorly when dealing with symmetry breaking or approximate symmetries. For example, during crystal phase transitions, spontaneous symmetry breaking can transform a high-symmetry state (such as a liquid) into a low-symmetry, ordered crystal structure, fundamentally changing the material's properties. Additionally, symmetry breaking can also occur when external forces act on the system. To tackle this challenge, the authors propose a relaxed E(3) graph-equivariant neural network framework that allows the model to learn and represent symmetry breaking in continuous groups by relaxing weights. This approach introduces controllable symmetry breaking, enabling the model to adapt to symmetry breaking phenomena in various physical systems. Experimental results show that these relaxed weights can learn the correct degree of symmetry breaking.
