Abstract:We present a new proof of descent for stably dominated types in any theory, dropping the hypothesis of the existence of global invariant extensions. Additionally, we give a much simpler proof of descent for stably dominated types in $\ACVF$. Furthermore, we demonstrate that any stable set in an $\NIP$ theory has the bounded stabilizing property. This result is subsequently used to correct Proposition 6.7 from the book on stable domination and independence in $\ACVF$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve The paper "On Descent and Germs" written by Pierre Simon and Mariana Vicaría aims to solve the problem of the descent property of stably dominated types in the theory. Specifically, the authors attempt to solve the following main problems: 1. **Simplify the descent theorem for stably dominated types**: - The authors propose a new proof method for proving that in any theory, when a global type \( p \) is stably dominated over a set \( A \), it remains stably dominated over an extended set \( B \). The key to this result is that there is no need to assume the existence of a global invariant extension (i.e., assume that \( \text{tp}(B/A) \) has a global \( \text{Aut}(M/A) \)-invariant extension). - In particular, for the algebraically closed valued field (ACVF), the authors give a simpler proof of the descent theorem. 2. **Correct errors in previous work**: - The authors correct the misstatement in Proposition 6.7 in the book "Stable Domination and Independence in ACVF" by D. Haskell, E. Hrushovski, and D. Macpherson. Specifically, they prove that in NIP theories, any stable set has the bounded stabilizing property. - The authors also provide a correct proof under the NIP assumption and discuss the possibility of natural generalization. 3. **Explore the weakest assumptions for the descent property**: - The authors explore whether the descent property of stably dominated types can be proved without the assumption of global invariant extension. This problem was raised in the work of E. Hrushovski and S. Rideau - Kikuchi and is an important contribution of this paper. ### Main results 1. **Simplified descent theorem**: - Theorem 4.3: Let \( p \) be a type that is generically stable over \( A \), and assume that \( p \) is dominated by an \( A \)-definable function \( f \) to some \( A \)-definable stably embedded set \( S \). Further assume that: - \( \text{tp}(b/A) \) does not fork over \( A \), or - \( p^{\otimes n} \) is generically stable for all \( n < \omega \) (this holds when \( S \) is stable). - Then there exists an \( A \)-definable function \( h \) such that \( h \) dominates \( p \) over \( A \), where \( \text{Int}(S, A) \) represents the union of all \( A \)-definable sets inside \( S \). 2. **Descent theorem in the general case**: - Theorem 4.1: Let \( p \) be a global \( A \)-invariant type, and \( p \) is stably dominated over \( Ab \). Then \( p \) is stably dominated over \( A \). 3. **Correct Proposition 6.7**: - The authors prove that in NIP theories, any stable set has the bounded stabilizing property and provide the correct proof. ### Conclusion Through these results, the authors not only simplify the proof of the descent theorem for stably dominated types, but also correct errors in previous work and explore the weakest assumption conditions for the descent property. These contributions are of great significance for the stable domination theory in model theory and its applications.
