Abstract:The ensemble inequivalence in a Coulomb liquid has been known since the years 1960s. The structure described by the canonical ensemble and the grand canonical ensemble are not equivalent. Recently the ensemble inequivalence has been observed in other long range statistical systems.

Abstract:Ensemble inequivalence, i.e. the possibility of observing different thermodynamic properties depending on the statistical ensemble which describes the system, is one of the hallmarks of long-range physics, which has been demonstrated in numerous classical systems. Here, an example of ensemble inequivalence of a long-range quantum ferromagnet is presented. While the $T=0$ microcanonical quantum phase-diagram coincides with that of the canonical ensemble, the phase-diagrams of the two ensembles are different at finite temperature. This is in contrast with the common lore of statistical mechanics of systems with short-range interactions where thermodynamic properties are bound to coincide for macroscopic systems described by different ensembles. The consequences of these findings in the context of atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) setups are delineated.

Abstract:We analyze the general relation between canonical and grand canonical ensembles in the thermodynamic limit. We begin our discussion by deriving, with an alternative approach, some standard results first obtained by Kac and coworkers in the late 1970s. Then, motivated by the Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) of trapped gases with a fixed number of atoms, which is well described by the canonical ensemble and by the recent groundbreaking experimental realization of BEC with photons in a dye-filled optical microcavity under genuine grand canonical conditions, we apply our formalism to a system of non-interacting Bose particles confined in a two-dimensional harmonic trap. We discuss in detail the mathematical origin of the inequivalence of ensembles observed in the condensed phase, giving place to the so-called grand canonical catastrophe of density fluctuations. We also provide explicit analytical expressions for the internal energy and specific heat and compare them with available experimental data. For these quantities, we show the equivalence of ensembles in the thermodynamic limit.

Asymptotic methods for confined fluids

Abstract:The thermodynamics and microstructure of confined fluids with small particle number are best described using the canonical ensemble. However, practical calculations can usually only be performed in the grand-canonical ensemble, which can introduce unphysical artifacts. We employ the method of asymptotics to transform grand-canonical observables to the canonical ensemble, where the former can be conveniently obtained using the classical density functional theory of inhomogeneous fluids. By formulating the ensemble transformation as a contour integral in the complex fugacity plane we reveal the influence of the Yang-Lee zeros in determining the form and convergence properties of the asymptotic series. The theory is employed to develop expansions for the canonical partition function and the canonical one-body density. Numerical investigations are then performed using an exactly soluble one-dimensional model system of hard-rods.

Abstract:The thermodynamics of a system of interacting bosonic particles and antiparticles in the presence of the Bose-Einstein condensate is studied in the framework of the Skyrme-like mean-field model. It is assumed that the total charge density (isospin density) is conserved at all temperatures. Two cases are explicitly considered: zero and nonzero isospin charge of the system. A comparative analysis is carried out using Canonical Ensemble and Grand Canonical Ensemble. It is shown that the Grand Canonical Ensemble is not suitable for describing bosonic systems of particles and antiparticles in the presence of condensate.

Abstract:This work explores fundamental statistical and thermodynamic properties of short-and long-range-interacting systems. The purpose of this study is twofold. Firstly, we rigorously prove that the probability distribution of arbitrary few-body observables is restricted by a Gaussian concentration bound (or Chernoff--Hoeffding inequality) above some threshold temperature. This bound is then derived for arbitrary Gibbs states of systems that include long-range interactions Secondly, we establish a quantitative relationship between the concentration bound of the Gibbs state and the equivalence of canonical and micro-canonical ensembles. We then evaluate the difference in the averages of thermodynamic properties between the canonical and the micro-canonical ensembles. Under the assumption of the Gaussian concentration bound on the canonical ensemble, the difference between the ensemble descriptions is upper-bounded by $\left[n^{-1} \log (n^{3/2}\Delta^{-1})\right]^{1/2}$ with $n$ being the system size and $\Delta$ being the width of the energy shell of the micro-canonical ensemble This limit gives a non-trivial upper bound \textit{exponentially small energy width} with respect to the system size. By combining these two results, we prove the ensemble equivalence as well as the weak eigenstate thermalization in arbitrary long-range-interacting systems above a threshold temperature.

Abstract:We solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for the combination of a spin system interacting with a spin bath environment. In particular, we focus on the time development of the reduced density matrix of the spin system. Under normal circumstances we show that the environment drives the reduced density matrix to a fully decoherent state, and furthermore the diagonal elements of the reduced density matrix approach those expected for the system in the canonical ensemble. We show one exception to the normal case is if the spin system cannot exchange energy with the spin bath. Our demonstration does not rely on time-averaging of observables nor does it assume that the coupling between system and bath is weak. Our findings show that the canonical ensemble is a state that may result from pure quantum dynamics, suggesting that quantum mechanics may be regarded as the foundation of quantum statistical mechanics.

Abstract:There is a consensus in science that information theory and statistical physics have a close relationship but the literary proofs of the equivalence between most of the conceptions in the two disciplines are still missing. In this work, according to the statistical ensembles' description of the information sequences that are generated by the i.i.d. single variable and multivariate information source, the relationship between the ensemble equivalence and asymptotic equipartition property is established. We find that the description of information sequences in classical information theory is a special case of the canonical ensemble description of information sequences. They are both the maximum entropy approximation of the real signal generation. Vice versa, the conjugate microcanonical ensemble description of the information sequences under hard constraints satisfies the condition in real signal generation exactly. Thus, the microcanoincal ensemble description is closer to the real signal generation than the conjugate canonical ensemble, but the ensemble equivalence between the microcanonical and canonical ensemble in the thermodynamic limit guarantees the effectiveness of classical information theory, i.e., the asymptotic equipartition property in information theory is an isotope of ensemble equivalence from statistical physics.

Abstract:We introduce a nonequilibrium grand-canonical ensemble defined by considering the stationary state of a driven system of particles put in contact with a particle reservoir. When an additivity assumption holds for the large deviation function of density, a chemical potential of the reservoir can be defined. The grand-canonical distribution then takes a form similar to the equilibrium one. At variance with equilibrium, though, the probability weight is "renormalized" by a contribution coming from the contact, with respect to the canonical probability weight of the isolated system. A formal grand-canonical potential can be introduced in terms of a scaled cumulant generating function, defined as the Legendre-Fenchel transform of the large deviation function of density. The role of the formal Legendre parameter can be played, physically, by the chemical potential of the reservoir when the latter can be defined, or by a potential energy difference applied between the system and the reservoir. Static fluctuation-response relations naturally follow from the large deviation structure. Classical Density Functional Theory in the Canonical Ensemble

Abstract:Classical density functional theory for finite temperatures is usually formulated in the grand-canonical ensemble where arbitrary variations of the local density are possible. However, in many cases the systems of interest are closed with respect to mass, e.g. canonical systems with fixed temperature and particle number. Although the tools of standard, grand-canonical density functional theory are often used in an ad hoc manner to study closed systems, their formulation directly in the canonical ensemble has so far not been known. In this work, the fundamental theorems underlying classical DFT are revisited and carefully compared in the two ensembles showing that there are only trivial formal differences. The practicality of DFT in the canonical ensemble is then illustrated by deriving the exact Helmholtz functional for several systems: the ideal gas, certain restricted geometries in arbitrary numbers of dimensions and finally a system of two hard-spheres in one dimension (hard rods) in a small cavity. Some remarkable similarities between the ensembles are apparent even for small systems with the latter showing strong echoes of the famous exact of result of Percus in the grand-canonical ensemble.

Abstract:We discuss problems associated with the notion of pH in heterogeneous systems. For homogeneous systems, standardization protocols lead to a well defined quantity, which although different from Sørensen's original idea of pH, is well reproducible and has become accepted as the measure of the ``hydrogen potential". On the other hand, for heterogeneous systems, pH defined in terms of the chemical part of the electrochemical activity is thermodynamically inconsistent and runs afoul of the Gibbs-Guggenheim principle that forbids splitting of the electrochemical potential into separate chemical and electrostatic parts -- since only the sum of two has any thermodynamic meaning. The problem is particularly relevant for modern simulation methods which involve charge regulation of proteins, polyelectrolytes, nanoparticles, colloidal suspensions etc. In this paper we show that titration isotherms calculated using semi-grand canonical simulations can be very different from the ones obtained using canonical reactive Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:The probability distribution of a function of a subsystem conditioned on the value of the function of the whole, in the limit when the ratio of their values goes to zero, has a limit law: It equals the unconditioned marginal probability distribution weighted by an exponential factor whose exponent is uniquely determined by the condition. We apply this theorem to explain the canonical equilibrium ensemble of a system in contact with a heat reservoir. Since the theorem only requires analysis at the level of the function of the subsystem and reservoir, it is applicable even without the knowledge of the composition of the reservoir itself, which extends the applicability of the canonical ensemble. Furthermore, we generalize our theorem to a model with strong interaction that contributes an additional term to the exponent, which is beyond the typical case of approximately additive functions. This result is new in both physics and mathematics, as a theory for the Gibbs conditioning principle for strongly correlated systems. A corollary provides a precise formulation of what a temperature bath is in probabilistic term

Abstract:The unconstrained ensemble describes completely open systems in which energy, volume and number of particles fluctuate. Here we show that not only equilibrium states can exist in this ensemble, but also that completely open systems can undergo first-order phase transitions. This is shown by studying a modified version of the Thirring model with attractive and repulsive interactions and with particles of finite size. The model exhibits first-order phase transitions in the unconstrained ensemble, at variance with the analogous model with point-like particles. While unconstrained and grand canonical ensembles are equivalent for this model, we found inequivalence between the unconstrained and isothermal-isobaric ensembles. By comparing the thermodynamic phase diagram in the unconstrained case with that obtained in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble, we show that phase transitions under completely open conditions for this model are different from those in which the number of particles is fixed, highlighting the inequivalence of ensembles.

From Liquid Structure to Configurational Entropy: Introducing Structural Covariance

Abstract:We connect the configurational entropy of a liquid to the geometrical properties of its local energy landscape, using a high-temperature expansion. It is proposed that correlations between local structures arises from their overlap and, being geometrical in nature, can be usefully determined using the inherent structures of high temperature liquids. We show quantitatively how the high-temperature covariance of these local structural fluctuations arising from their geometrical overlap, combined with their energetic stability, control the decrease of entropy with decreasing energy. We apply this formalism to a family of Favoured Local Structure (FLS) lattice models with two low symmetry FLS's which are found to either crystallize or form a glass on cooling. The covariance, crystal energy and estimated freezing temperature are tested as possible predictors of glass-forming ability in the model system.

Abstract:Theories of small systems play an important role in the fundamental understanding of finite size effects in statistical mechanics, as well as the validation of molecular simulation results as no computer can simulate fluids in the thermodynamic limit. Previously, a shell particle was included in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble in order to resolve an ambiguity in the resulting partition function. The shell particle removed either redundant volume states or redundant translational degrees of freedom of the system and yielded quantitative differences from traditional simulations in this ensemble. In this work, we investigate the effect of including a shell particle in the canonical, grand canonical, and Gibbs ensembles. For systems comprised of a pure component ideal gas, analytical expressions for various thermodynamic properties are obtained. We also derive the Metropolis Monte Carlo simulation acceptance criteria for these ensembles with shell particles, and the results of the simulations of an ideal gas are in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions. The system size dependence of various important ensemble averages is also analyzed.
Apparent density fluctuations in N-constant ensemble simulations

Abstract:In computer simulations performed in constant number of particles ensembles, although the total number of particles N contained in the simulation box does not fluctuate, hence giving a zero apparent compressibility, there are still local fluctuations in the number of particles. It is shown herein that these apparent fluctuations produce a compressibility that can be computed from the calculated radial distribution function, and which matches to a great accuracy the compressibility of the fluid for the open system. This statement implies that the radial distribution function evaluated in simulation of constant number of particles is identical to that evaluated in the grand canonical ensemble, for the entire distance range within half-box width. This is illustrated for the hard sphere and Lennard-Jones fluids and for molecular models of water. The origin of this apparent fluctuation is that the bulk of the remaining particles, outside the range over which the distribution function is calculated, act as a reservoir of particles for those within this range, thanks to the periodic boundary conditions. The implications on the calculation of the Kirkwood-Buff integrals are discussed.

Abstract:A methodology is presented for Monte Carlo simulation of fluids in a new ensemble that can be used to obtain phase coexistence properties of multicomponent systems from a single computer experiment. The method is based on performing a simulation simultaneously in two distinct physical regions of generally different densities and compositions. Three types of perturbations are performed, a random displacement of molecules that ensures equilibrium within each region, an equal and opposite change in the volume of the two regions that results in equality of pressures, and random transfers of molecules that equalize the chemical potentials of each component in the two regions. The method is applied to the calculation of the liquid-gas coexistence envelope for the pure Lennard-Jones (6, 12) fluid for several reduced temperatures from the vicinity of the triple point to close to the critical point (T* = 0.75 to T* = 1.30). Good overall agreement with previously available literature results is obtained, with some deviations at the extremes of this temperature range.

Abstract:We consider Canonical Gibbsian ensembles of Euler point vortices on the 2-dimensional torus or in a bounded domain of R 2 . We prove that under the Central Limit scaling of vortices intensities, and provided that the system has zero global space average in the bounded domain case (neutrality condition), the ensemble converges to the so-called Energy-Enstrophy Gaussian random distributions. This can be interpreted as describing Gaussian fluctuations around the mean field limit of vortices ensembles. The main argument consists in proving convergence of partition functions of vortices and Gaussian distributions.
