Abstract:Many centrality metrics have been proposed over the years to compute the centrality of nodes, which has been a key issue in complex network analysis. The most important node can be estimated through a variety of metrics, such as degree, closeness, eigenvector, betweenness, flow betweenness, cumulated nominations and subgraph. Simulated flow is a common method adopted by many centrality metrics, such as flow betweenness centrality, which assumes that the information spreads freely in the entire network. Generally speaking, the farther the information travels, the more times the information passes the geometric center. Thus, it is easy to determine which node is more likely to be the center of the geometry network. However, during information transmission, different nodes do not share the same vitality, and some nodes are more active than others. Therefore, the product of one node's degree and its clustering coefficient can be viewed as a good factor to show how active this node is. In this paper, a new centrality metric called vitality centrality is introduced, which is only based on this product and the simulated flow. Simulation experiments based on six test networks have been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of our new metric.

Abstract:The high-level contribution of this paper is a correlation coefficient analysis of the well-known centrality metrics (degree centrality, eigenvector centrality, betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, farness centrality and eccentricity) for network analysis studies on real-world network graphs representing diverse domains (ranging from 34 nodes to 332 nodes). We observe the two degree-based centrality metrics (degree and eigenvector centrality) to be highly correlated across all the networks studied. There is predominantly a moderate level of correlation between any two of the shortest paths-based centrality metrics (betweenness, closeness, farness and eccentricity) and such a correlation is consistently observed across all the networks. Though we observe a poor correlation between a degree-based centrality metric and a shortest-path based centrality metric for regular random networks, as the variation in the degree distribution of the vertices increases (i.e., as the network gets increasingly scale-free), the correlation coefficient between the two classes of centrality metrics increases.

Abstract:The structure of many complex networks includes edge directionality and weights on top of their topology. Network analysis that can seamlessly consider combination of these properties are desirable. In this paper, we study two important such network analysis techniques, namely, centrality and clustering. An information-flow based model is adopted for clustering, which itself builds upon an information theoretic measure for computing centrality. Our principal contributions include a generalized model of Markov entropic centrality with the flexibility to tune the importance of node degrees, edge weights and directions, with a closed-form asymptotic analysis. It leads to a novel two-stage graph clustering algorithm. The centrality analysis helps reason about the suitability of our approach to cluster a given graph, and determine `query' nodes, around which to explore local community structures, leading to an agglomerative clustering mechanism. The entropic centrality computations are amortized by our clustering algorithm, making it computationally efficient: compared to prior approaches using Markov entropic centrality for clustering, our experiments demonstrate multiple orders of magnitude of speed-up. Our clustering algorithm naturally inherits the flexibility to accommodate edge directionality, as well as different interpretations and interplay between edge weights and node degrees. Overall, this paper thus not only makes significant theoretical and conceptual contributions, but also translates the findings into artifacts of practical relevance, yielding new, effective and scalable centrality computations and graph clustering algorithms, whose efficacy has been validated through extensive benchmarking experiments.

Abstract:Many real-world networks exhibit the phenomenon of edge clustering,which is typically measured by the average clustering coefficient. Recently,an alternative measure, the average closure coefficient, is proposed to quantify local clustering. It is shown that the average closure coefficient possesses a number of useful properties and can capture complementary information missed by the classical average clustering coefficient. In this paper, we study the asymptotic distribution of the average closure coefficient of a heterogeneous Erdős–Rényi random graph. We prove that the standardized average closure coefficient converges in distribution to the standard normal distribution. In the Erdős–Rényi random graph,the variance of the average closure coefficient exhibits the same phase transition phenomenon as the average clustering coefficient.

Abstract:Measuring the importance of nodes in a network with a centrality measure is an core task in any network application. There many measures available and it is speculated that many encode similar information. We give an explicit non-linear relationship between two of the most popular measures of node centrality: degree and closeness. Based on a shortest-path tree approximation, we give an analytic derivation that shows the inverse of closeness is linearly dependent on the logarithm of degree. We show that our hypothesis works well for a range of networks produced from stochastic network models and for networks derived from 130 real-world data sets. We connect our results with previous results for other network distance scales such as average distance. Our results imply that measuring closeness is broadly redundant unless our relationship is used to remove the dependence on degree from closeness. The success of our relationship suggests that most networks can be approximated by shortest-path spanning trees which are all statistically similar two or more steps away from their root nodes.

Abstract:The clustering coefficient is a valuable tool for understanding the structure of complex networks. It is widely used to analyze social networks, biological networks, and other complex systems. While there is generally a single common definition for the local clustering coefficient, there are two different ways to calculate the global clustering coefficient. The first approach takes the average of the local clustering coefficients for each node in the network. The second one is based on the ratio of closed triplets to all triplets. It is shown that these two definitions of the global clustering coefficients are strongly inequivalent and may significantly impact the accuracy of the outcome.

Abstract:The discriminant power of centrality indices for the degree, eigenvector, closeness, betweenness and subgraph centrality is analyzed. It is defined by the number of graphs for which the standard deviation of the centrality of its nodes is zero. On the basis of empirical analysis it is concluded that the subgraph centrality displays better discriminant power than the rest of centralities. We also propose some new conjectures about the types of graphs for which the subgraph centrality does not discriminate among nonequivalent nodes.
Bridgeness: A Local Index on Edge Significance in Maintaining Global Connectivity

Abstract:Edges in a network can be divided into two kinds according to their different roles: some enhance the locality like the ones inside a cluster while others contribute to the global connectivity like the ones connecting two clusters. A recent study by Onnela et al uncovered the weak ties effects in mobile communication. In this paper, we provide complementary results on document networks, that is, the edges connecting less similar nodes in content are more significant in maintaining the global connectivity. We propose an index called bridgeness to quantify the edge significance in maintaining connectivity, which only depends on local information of the network topology. We compare the bridgeness with content similarity and some other structural indices according to an edge percolation process. Experimental results on document networks show that the bridgeness outperforms content similarity in characterizing the edge significance. Furthermore, extensive numerical results on disparate networks indicate that the bridgeness is also better than some well-known indices on edge significance, including the Jaccard coefficient, degree product and betweenness centrality.

Abstract:Despite the huge importance that the centrality metrics have in understanding the topology of a network, too little is known about the effects that small alterations in the topology of the input graph induce in the norm of the vector that stores the node centralities. If so, then it could be possible to avoid re-calculating the vector of centrality metrics if some minimal changes occur in the network topology, which would allow for significant computational savings. Hence, after formalising the notion of centrality, three of the most basic metrics were herein considered (i.e., Degree, Eigenvector, and Katz centrality). To perform the simulations, two probabilistic failure models were used to describe alterations in network topology: Uniform (i.e., all nodes can be independently deleted from the network with a fixed probability) and Best Connected (i.e., the probability a node is removed depends on its degree). Our analysis suggests that, in the case of degree, small variations in the topology of the input graph determine small variations in Degree centrality, independently of the topological features of the input graph; conversely, both Eigenvector and Katz centralities can be extremely sensitive to changes in the topology of the input graph. In other words, if the input graph has some specific features, even small changes in the topology of the input graph can have catastrophic effects on the Eigenvector or Katz centrality.

Abstract:The recent high level of interest in weighted complex networks gives rise to a need to develop new measures and to generalize existing ones to take the weights of links into account. Here we focus on various generalizations of the clustering coefficient, which is one of the central characteristics in the complex network theory. We present a comparative study of the several suggestions introduced in the literature, and point out their advantages and limitations. The concepts are illustrated by simple examples as well as by empirical data of the world trade and weighted coauthorship networks.

Abstract:Subgraph centrality, introduced by Estrada and Rodríguez-Velázquez in [12], has become a widely used centrality measure in the analysis of networks, with applications in biology, neuroscience, economics and many other fields. It is also worthy of study from a strictly mathematical point of view, in view of its connections to topics in spectral graph theory, number theory, analytic matrix functions, and combinatorics. In this paper we present some new results and a list of open questions about subgraph centrality and other node centrality measures based on graph walks.

Abstract:The roles of different nodes within a network are often understood through centrality analysis, which aims to quantify the capacity of a node to influence, or be influenced by, other nodes via its connection topology. Many different centrality measures have been proposed, but the degree to which they offer unique information, and such whether it is advantageous to use multiple centrality measures to define node roles, is unclear. Here we calculate correlations between 17 different centrality measures across 212 diverse real-world networks, examine how these correlations relate to variations in network density and global topology, and investigate whether nodes can be clustered into distinct classes according to their centrality profiles. We find that centrality measures are generally positively correlated to each other, the strength of these correlations varies across networks, and network modularity plays a key role in driving these cross-network variations. Data-driven clustering of nodes based on centrality profiles can distinguish different roles, including topological cores of highly central nodes and peripheries of less central nodes. Our findings illustrate how network topology shapes the pattern of correlations between centrality measures and demonstrate how a comparative approach to network centrality can inform the interpretation of nodal roles in complex networks.

Abstract:Many real world systems can be expressed as complex networks of interconnected nodes. It is frequently important to be able to quantify the relative importance of the various nodes in the network, a task accomplished by defining some centrality measures, with different centrality definitions stressing different aspects of the network. It is interesting to know to what extent these different centrality definitions are related for different networks. In this work, we study the correlation between pairs of a set of centrality measures for different real world networks and two network models. We show that the centralities are in general correlated, but with stronger correlations for network models than for real networks. We also show that the strength of the correlation of each pair of centralities varies from network to network. Taking this fact into account, we propose the use of a centrality correlation profile, consisting of the values of the correlation coefficients between all pairs of centralities of interest, as a way to characterize networks. Using the yeast protein interaction network as an example we show also that the centrality correlation profile can be used to assess the adequacy of a network model as a representation of a given real network.

Abstract:Estimating influential nodes in large scale networks including but not limited to social networks, biological networks, communication networks, emerging smart grids etc. is a topic of fundamental interest. To understand influences of nodes in a network, a classical metric is centrality within which there are multiple specific instances including degree centrality, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality and more. As of today, existing algorithms to identify nodes with high centrality measures operate upon the entire (or rather global) network, resulting in high computational complexity. In this paper, we design efficient algorithms for determining the betweenness centrality in large scale networks by taking advantage of the modular topology exhibited by most of these large scale networks. Very briefly, modular topologies are those wherein the entire network appears partitioned into distinct modules (or clusters or communities), wherein nodes within the module (that likely share highly similar profiles) have dense connections between them, while connections across modules are relatively sparse. Using a novel adaptation of Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm, and executing it over local modules and over sparse edges between modules, we design algorithms that can correctly compute the betweenness centrality much faster than existing algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first work that leverage modular topologies of large scale networks to address the centrality problem, though here we mostly limit our discussions to social networks. We also provide more insights on centrality in general, and also how our algorithms can be used to determine other centrality measures.

Abstract:In network theory and network analysis, indicators of centrality identify the most important vertices on complex networks. In this paper, we perform analysis on correlations of 13 centralities on ER random network and research how the Radial centralities interpret the Medial centralities adequately by statistical learning approaches such as linear regression, forward- and backward-stepwise selection and lasso. As a result, it is illustrated that some centralities on ER random networks with different connecting probability p always display strong correlations, and the Medial centrality can be interpreted by the Radial centralities. Furthermore, the linear regression is used to fit the relationship and retain some centralities to describe a medial centrality in our example, which will help to solve the problem that a centrality we donâ€™t have a ready algorithm and compute difficultly. The methods proposed by statistical learning provide an alternative way to obtain better understanding of the centralities and reveal the relationship among them.

Abstract:The calculation of centrality measures is common practice in the study of networks, as they attempt to quantify the importance of individual vertices, edges, or other components. Different centralities attempt to measure importance in different ways. In this paper, we examine a conjecture posed by E. Estrada regarding the ability of several measures to distinguish the vertices of networks. Estrada conjectured that if all vertices of a graph have the same subgraph centrality, then all vertices must also have the same degree, eigenvector, closeness, and betweenness centralities. We provide a counterexample for the latter two centrality measures and propose a revised conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the local clustering coefficient of preferential attachment models. A general approach to preferential attachment was introduced in earlier, where a wide class of models (PA-class) was defined in terms of constraints that are sufficient for the study of the degree distribution and the clustering coefficient. It was previously shown that the degree distribution in all models of the PA-class follows a power law. Also, the global clustering coefficient was analyzed and a lower bound for the average local clustering coefficient was obtained. We expand the results by analyzing the local clustering coefficient for the PA-class of models. Namely, we analyze the behavior of C(d) which is the average local clustering for the vertices of degree d.

Abstract:As relational datasets modeled as graphs keep increasing in size and their data-acquisition is permeated by uncertainty, graph-based analysis techniques can become computationally and conceptually challenging. In particular, node centrality measures rely on the assumption that the graph is perfectly known -- a premise not necessarily fulfilled for large, uncertain networks. Accordingly, centrality measures may fail to faithfully extract the importance of nodes in the presence of uncertainty. To mitigate these problems, we suggest a statistical approach based on graphon theory: we introduce formal definitions of centrality measures for graphons and establish their connections to classical graph centrality measures. A key advantage of this approach is that centrality measures defined at the modeling level of graphons are inherently robust to stochastic variations of specific graph realizations. Using the theory of linear integral operators, we define degree, eigenvector, Katz and PageRank centrality functions for graphons and establish concentration inequalities demonstrating that graphon centrality functions arise naturally as limits of their counterparts defined on sequences of graphs of increasing size. The same concentration inequalities also provide high-probability bounds between the graphon centrality functions and the centrality measures on any sampled graph, thereby establishing a measure of uncertainty of the measured centrality score.
