Abstract:We give a method to determine an explicit solution to a system of two inhomogeneous linear recursive sequences of higher order. Our approach can be used efficiently in solving certain combinatorial problems. We finish the paper by considering a tiling problem with black and white dominoes, and we use the method as a demonstration to find the solution.

Abstract:We study initial value problems having dynamics ruled by discontinuous ordinary differential equations with the property of possessing a unique solution. We identify a precise class of such systems that we call solvable intitial value problems and we prove that for this class of problems the unique solution can always be obtained analytically via transfinite recursion. We present several examples including a nontrivial one whose solution yields, at an integer time, a real encoding of the halting set for Turing machines; therefore showcasing that the behavior of solvable systems is related to ordinal Turing computations.

Abstract:We study sequences $(x_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ of reals given by $x_{n+1} = f(x)$ where $$f(x) = x - \sum_{i=1}^{m} \frac{\alpha_i}{x - \beta_i},$$ where $\alpha_1, \dots, \alpha_m \in \mathbb{R}_{>0}$ and $\beta_1, \dots, \beta_m \in \mathbb{R}$ are arbitrary. A special case is $x_{n+1} = x_n - 1/x_n$ due to Ronald Graham for which Chamberland \& Martelli showed that the dynamics is chaotic (topologically conjugate to the doubling map). We prove that the general nonlinear recursion, despite being potentially chaotic, is effective at ensuring that most iterates end up close to one of the poles $\beta_i$ relatively quickly. More precisely, for a positive proportion of initial values $x \in \mathbb{R}$, the sequence gets very close (distance $\lesssim |x|^{-1}$) to one of the poles $\beta_i$ within a relatively small ($\lesssim x^2$) number of iteration steps.

Abstract:We review models of biological evolution in which the population frequency changes deterministically with time. If the population is self-replicating, although the equations for simple prototypes can be linearised, nonlinear equations arise in many complex situations. For sexual populations, even in the simplest setting, the equations are necessarily nonlinear due to the mixing of the parental genetic material. The solutions of such nonlinear equations display interesting features such as multiple equilibria and phase transitions. We mainly discuss those models for which an analytical understanding of such nonlinear equations is available.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:In this paper, an improved nonlinear Riccati equation method is established and then used to study nonlinear evolution equations with variable coefficients. The idea behind this current study is to use the nonlinear Riccati equation with constant coefficients and convert it to second-order linear ordinary differential equations using appropriate transformations. The solutions of these second-order linear ordinary differential equations are then used to propose the solutions to the nonlinear Riccati equation. This improved method consists of the well-known -expansion and -expansion methods as a special case. It also consists of a newly proposed (in this current study) -expansion method. As a result, this improved method is employed to investigate the traveling wave solutions of -dimensional models with variable coefficients, such as the extended Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation, nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and Davey–Stewartson equations. Solitary waves are obtained by taking the parameters involving these derived traveling wave solutions as special values. Furthermore, the constraint conditions for the existence of solutions to these variable coefficient equations are also revealed. This improved method has a wider range of applications for addressing nonlinear wave equations.

Abstract:We consider an initial value problem for a second-order nonlinear dynamical system that allows discontinuous inputs. In this problem, one state variable is restricted in a closed and bounded interval while the other state variable is unlimited. The existence and uniqueness of the solution to this problem is studied in a time interval determined by two adjacent instants at which the input may be discontinuous. Some results are obtained on the maximal interval of existence of the unique solution in this time interval. The results are then extended to the entire time domain. A robot example is given to verify our results.

Abstract:Abstract We study non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing dynamical systems by using linear dynamical systems. These are systems consisting of a bounded linear operator acting on a separable complex Banach space $X$ , which becomes a probability space when endowed with a non-degenerate Gaussian measure. We generalize some recent results of Bergelson, del Junco, Lemańczyk and Rosenblatt, and show in particular that sets $\{n_{k}\}$ such that $n_{k+1}/n_{k}\to +\infty $ , or such that $n_{k}$ divides $n_{k+1}$ for each $k\ge 0$ , are non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing linear dynamical systems. We also give examples, for each $r\ge 1$ , of $r$ -Bohr sets which are non-recurrence sets for some weakly mixing systems.

Abstract:For the (1 + 2)-dimensional AKNS system of lower order, a linear system which separates variables is constructed. It is found out that any nonlinear equation generated by such a linear hyperbolic su(N) system admits solutions which tend to zero in all directions in the space. The solutions given by nth Darboux transformation split up into more than n solitons as t --> infinity. The application to the Davey-Stewartson I equation is considered.

Abstract:A system of singular integral equations with monotone and concave nonlinearity in the subcritical case is investigated. The specified system and its scalar analog have direct applications in various areas of physics and biology. In particular, scalar and vector equations of this nature are encountered in the dynamic theory of p-adic strings, in the theory of radiative transfer, in the kinetic theory of gases, and in the mathematical theory of the spread of epidemic diseases. A constructive theorem of existence in the space of continuous and bounded vector functions is proved. The integral asymptotic of the constructed solution is studied. An effective iterative process for constructing an approximate solution to this system is proposed. In a certain class of bounded vector functions, the uniqueness of the solution is proved. In the class of bounded vector functions (with non-negative coordinates) with a zero limit at infinity, the absence of an identically zero solution is proved. Examples of the matrix kernel and nonlinearities are given to illustrate the importance of the obtained results. Some of the examples have applications in the above-mentioned branches of natural science.
