Abstract:We study the anomalies of two-dimensional BPS defects in six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ superconformal field theories. Using a holographic description of these defects furnished by probe D4-branes in AdS${}_7$ solutions of ten-dimensional type IIA supergravity, we compute the two independent defect Weyl anomalies from the on-shell action for a spherical defect and defect sphere entanglement entropy. We find agreement between the holographic prediction for the defect A-type anomaly coming from the defect sphere free energy and the leading large $N$ contribution to the defect `t Hooft anomaly found using anomaly inflow. We also find agreement between the holographic computation of the expectation value of a surface operator wrapping a torus and the supersymmetric localization computation for a circular Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills theory on $S^5$. Lastly, we holographically compute the defect gravitational anomaly from the Wess-Zumino action of the probe D4-brane, which provides a subleading large $N$ correction to the defect A-type anomaly.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the anomalies of two - dimensional BPS defects in six - dimensional \(N=(1,0)\) superconformal field theories. Specifically, the authors use the holographic description of probe D4 - branes in the AdS_7 solution of ten - dimensional type II supergravity to study two independent Weyl anomalies of these defects. By calculating the free energy of spherical defects and the defect - sphere entanglement entropy, the authors obtain the specific expressions of these anomalies and compare them with the results obtained from the field - theory perspective using the anomaly - inflow method, verifying the validity of the holographic prediction. In addition, the author also calculates the defect - gravity anomaly and compares it with the expected value of the Wilson loop operator, further verifying the accuracy of the holographic method. ### Main contributions of the paper 1. **Holographic calculation**: - **Weyl anomaly**: The authors calculate two independent Weyl anomalies \(a_\Sigma\) and \(d_2\) of two - dimensional defects by the holographic method and verify that these results are consistent with those obtained by the anomaly - inflow method in field theory. - **Gravity anomaly**: Calculate the defect - gravity anomaly through the Wess - Zumino action and find that it has a sub - leading contribution to the \(a_\Sigma\) anomaly in the large \(N\) limit. 2. **Field - theory verification**: - **Wilson loop operator**: The author compares the expected value of the holographically - calculated surface operator with the supersymmetric localization result of the circular Wilson loop in the \(N = 1\) super - Yang - Mills theory and finds that they match exactly. - **Anomaly inflow**: Through the IIB string theory construction, the author studies the inflow of the 6d - anomaly polynomial of string defects in the six - dimensional superconformal field theory onto the defects and successfully matches the leading large - \(N\) result of the \(a_\Sigma\) anomaly. 3. **Theoretical framework**: - **Probe D4 - brane embedding**: Discuss in detail the embedding method of probe D4 - branes in the AdS_7×M3 background and how to maintain supersymmetry at the junction. - **Entanglement entropy**: Calculate the contribution of probe - string defects to the entanglement entropy of spherical regions and verify the effectiveness of the holographic method in calculating defect physical quantities. ### Formula summary - **Weyl anomaly**: \[ T_{\mu\mu}\big|_\Sigma=\frac{1}{24\pi}(a_\Sigma E_2 + d_1\hat{I}_2^2 + d_2P[W]_\Sigma) \] where \(E_2\) is the two - dimensional Euler density of the defect sub - manifold, \(\hat{I}_2\) is the square of the embedded traceless second fundamental form, and \(P[W]_\Sigma\) is the trace of the background Weyl tensor pulled back onto the defect. - **Type A Weyl anomaly**: \[ a_\Sigma = 24(q,r) \] - **Type B Weyl anomaly**: \[ d_1 = d_2 = 32(q,r) \] - **Expected value of the Wilson loop operator**: \[ \langle W\rangle=\exp[\beta(q,r)] \] - **Gravity anomaly**: \[ a_\Sigma = 24(q,r)+\frac{1}{2}\sum_iq_ir_i \] These results not only verify the effectiveness of the holographic method in calculating defect anomalies in high - dimensional field theories but also provide a new perspective for understanding defects in six - dimensional \(N=(1,0)\) superconformal field theories.
